Holy SMOKE! An Air Force General made a speech recently and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation has taken issue with Olson’s remarks, (and) is calling for the two-star general to be court-martialed and “aggressively and very visibly brought to justice for his unforgivable crimes and transgressions.
Take a look at the linked article if you’re interested. Here’s what I’d do if I heard an atheist speak to the Air Force:
“What a jerk….well, he’s got his views, I have mine.”
I would know that guy’s not convincing me or anybody else about anything……WHY do atheists feel SO defensive? Why call for a court martial, for goodness sake?
What makes them so sensitive, so ugly, so condemnatory?
I think I have an answer. Got one yourself? If you are an atheist, please be honest and tell us if you’d be calling for this extreme punishment. I get why we might not want to hammer on faith in military talks, but this General only spoke about how he felt God helped him. I’m pretty sure he didn’t add “and if YOU are stupid enough to be an atheist, think twice, you idiot!” Right?
And, ready? This was said a speech at a National Day of Prayer Task Force event on May 7, Maj. Gen. Craig Olson credits God for his accomplishments in the military, and refers to himself as a “redeemed believer in Christ.” “Day of Prayer?” What kind of talk would atheists have approved of?

Thanks to the ubiquitous 24/7 Media Megalopolis, every flaming nutball and every last aggrieved outrage advocacy group gets a stage now.
There is no basis whatsoever in the UCMJ to charge General Olson, and the idiots in that organization know that. They just want the headlines, but the nefarious hidden agenda is to chip away at religious freedom. There is a very real push to silence all “God talk” in the military. That is what this is really all about. They won’t get it all at once, but they can continue pushing the agenda. Leftwingers are experts at incrementalism.

I am an atheist, but one whose freedom ends where the other person’s nose begins, & vice versa. I have no problems with what others believe, unless they are violent under the guise of religion or a cult, & am not threatened by pictures of Jesus, crosses, stars of David, creches, Christmas trees, sculptures of the Ten Commandments, religious logos on coinage or bills, or other religious expressions of faith, even in public places.
A dear friend, no longer living, was being operated on at M.D.Anderson in Houston. Surgery was to take 3 hours, so the Episcopal Church to which she was devoted held a vigil for that time period. I went to honor her, & sat in a pew for 3 hours to think of her & wish her well. Didn’t hurt me a bit, though I would have liked a cushion on that hard wood. After her death I donated an antique English sterling goblet engraved with the armorials of the Princess Royal, Princess Mary, to the church in her memory. They use it for the Communion service.
I am very irritated by the militant atheists who try to force their lack of orthodox faith on others, something I will never do. My beliefs, or lack of, are my own, and unless asked I do not offer them. I am not offended if asked to attend church, but will go for a special reason, or to honor another person as explained above.

I don’t understand what their problem with FREE speech is. I guess it’s only meant for them.
As a side note: Please, could someone, anyone, find where it says “Separation of Church and State” anywhere in our Constitution? This is what I find: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;” Now why is that the very first line of the First Amendment? Must be important.

“Separation of Church and State” wasn’t meant in this manor. If it was, why does Congress begin with a prayer to God before convening? And as I have pointed out before, the word “GOD” is etched in stone all over our nations capital? Case dismissed!

Linda, why, indeed? What are they SO afraid of, anyway? The shudder of having no hope is more than I could bear, and the older I get, the more the whole Christian story just makes sense.

This is what adults do; they say “well, gee….I don’t agree, but let him talk..” Not all adult Americans anymore, that’s for sure. This guy isn’t SELLING his faith…he’s talking about how HE personally relies on it. They even mention he refers to himself as a Born Again Christian (or something like that) but the STORY is he NEVER MENTIONS IT IN THE SPEECH. SO, now that’s wrong, TOO?

Woodster and Mal…..As you know, that phrase “separation of church and state” isn’t there, but you’d sure think it was when you hear the self righteous hypocrites… Nobody is making America a CHRISTiAN COUNTRY…particularly not this president, who says we’re decidedly NOT a Christian country, even when about 75% do associate with that faith.

I believe the evil one is in the ear of these militant atheists. As for the secular humanist agnostic Truth deniers (with all due respect) same thing, they just don’t know it. By the way, any of you see headlines from Huff Post? They’re very often on CHRISTIANITY and, though they throw in a mildly positive article very seldom, it’s almost always so negative that it makes me laugh…seriously, it does. They’re on a HUGE push there. Searching any avenue to slam Christianity.
Silverfiddle; I couldn’t comment at your post today without being pounced upon, so I didn’t, but I mostly disagree with you. I know YOU would have shown respect but the others would not have.
I do not agree that Bush is as horrible as you suggest and the sound of everybody on the planet but liberal loons urging us toward war in Iraq still rings in my ears. Plus, it always stuns me when soldiers love Bush, ride with Bush, etc. He was an amazing president in his caring for those soldiers. While I think Iraq was a huge mistake (as did Mr. Z at the time….BIG TIME), and I regret it badly, it was not done with bad intentions, everybody believed in the project, and, if anything, Bush was overly optimistic in fellow man; the GUILTY ONES, the HEINOUS ONES, were the CIA, who should have known that region better and understood and advised “THEY DO NOT WANT DEMOCRACY…TAKE SADDAM OUT and GET OUT IMMEDIATELY” (Oh, I wish) I lay 80% of the blame on INTEL. ALthough I do believe that those America often considers dictators and bad for everybody are often better left in power. OFTEN.
When I know for a fact that Americans who are taught Arabic, for example, for the CIA, Military, etc., are taught ‘High Arabic,’ one that any street person would see immediately isn’t ‘real’, I know our intel STINKS. That’s VERY basic stuff. … Not a great thought

I was in a hotel room in Germany where to my knowledge no one spoke English. I woke up around 2 a.m. with a pain that reminded me of the near burst appendix I’d had about four years earlier. I didn’t know what to do besides pace the room wondering what to do.

But I never thought to check Christianity because I’d known growing up there was nothing to that.
Eventually, I read a list of prophecies concerning the Messiah cross-referenced to events in the Gospels.
I had been reading the Bible because I felt I needed a familiarity with it to be literate.
Now I had found that the seed I had planted in me had grown to full faith and I acknowledged Jesus as my lord.
It was a year later before I realized I also needed Him as my Redeemer.

I have a friend who was swimming along the coast when fog hit and he literally forgot which was to shore and was tiring. He had absolutely NO desire to know God, to believe in Jesus, etc…NONE. As he swam, he took a chance on the direction to shore (knowing he’d die if it was the wrong choice) and said something like what you did “God, if you’re there, get me out of here and I’m with you!” And He did and he has. VERY strong Christian. Always blows my mind.

Z, Christian families have a better shot? I have to say no. You don’t even have to be religious to be a conservative. Conservative Capitalist is all you need to be.
I really dislike that every time I see the word Conservative in the news it is always appended or prepended Christian Conservative, Evangelical Conservative, Religious Right. It creates the impression in young minds that if republicans get into office they will somehow make you go to church. Then you had that moron republican female congress person or senator talking about how things would be better if everyone went to church and maybe that should be a law……

It would be difficult to argue that Christian families have a better chance in life, since I think it is possible to be a genuinely good person without believing in a Supreme Being, but I actually do not know how to begin such a conversation. The rottenest little rat was always the preacher’s son, which tends to illustrate this point: one may have the best parent, or the worst, and ultimately that offspring will make their own way in life. College educated parents generally raise children who attend college, but whether that child becomes a scholar is an entirely different matter. I do personally believe that life is easier for those who are in company with the Lord, but that does not invalidate the view of someone else that they are doing just fine alone. My view is that everyone is capable of saintly behavior, and just as equally able of committing heinous feats. The beauty of what I believe is that everyone may find the Lord on their own terms and in their own good time … or not, and none of this will affect me personally. On the other hand, people who wish to force me to believe as they do, or try to separate me from my beliefs, will find themselves involved in one hell of a contest with me.

I agree that being Republican shouldn’t immediately plug someone into a religion. it’s stilly. You’re right about that ridiculous law!!! It gives fuel to the leftwing loony hate-Christians mantra…and it really deserves to!
Mustang, I see Christian families a LOT more than most people do, and I’m amazed at the level of involvement in their kids’ schooling, etc… And the way so many of the kids excel. That’s not to say there aren’t good Christian families whose kids are a MESS, which I have also seen. but, in general? it’s a very good, solid start to have FAITH and hang with kids raised the same way.
