Michelle Obama….”change their minds!”

From THIS article, we find something interesting and telling:  In a commencement speech at Ohio’s Oberlin College on Monday, First Lady Michelle Obama urged graduates not to surround themselves completely with like-minded people.

“You might be tempted to recreate what you had here at Oberlin, to seek out like-minded individuals,” Obama told graduates of the famously liberal college.

Instead, Obama said, the new graduates should actively seek out conflict and not be afraid to coexist with people who have vastly different opinions. From her speech:

“Here at Oberlin, most of the time you’re probably surrounded by folks who share your beliefs. But out in the real world, there are plenty of people who think very differently than you do, and they hold their opinions just as passionately. So if you want to change their minds, if you want to work with them to move this country forward, you can’t just shut them out. You have to persuade them, and you have to compromise with them.”

SO, in other words, she wants progressives not to seek out conservatives (“Today I want to suggest that if you truly wish to carry on the Oberlin legacy of service and social justice”,) with friendship or respect for others’ opinions, but she adds that  “I want to urge you to actively seek out the most contentious, polarized, gridlocked places you can find because so often throughout our history, those have been the places where progress really happens.”

Divide, insult, feel superior to, change others……Says a LOT to me;  what’s it say to you?

  1. IT SAYS THE SAME LIBERAL B.S. IT ALWAYS HAS, Z. What they SHOULD be asking is why do they want to change the successful outcome of the most advanced society the world has ever known? And also the most charitable to people all around the world.

  2. John M. Berger says:

“But out in the real world, there are plenty of people who think very differently than you do”

Yes, that’s because the “real world” is REAL; just look at it. It’s too bad that liberal institutions of higher learning, such as Oberlin, do little more than indoctrinate students to hide from REALITY! If I had a kid, ready for higher education, I would certainly forgo the reported > $41,000 (annual tuition alone @ Oberlin) for a reasonable tuition @ an institution providing a curriculum and culture that he/she could use in the “real world”.

  3. Kid says:

I think this translates pretty closely

Mal……well, we know the Obamas don’t agree with us on advanced societies, don’t we. If they’re advanced, they should have income redistribution, leaving the hard workers in the cold and catering to those who won’t work……..the left goes from black to white in three seconds flat. There is no gray to them. It’s either YOU HATE THE POOR or YOU GIVE TO THE POOR…and WE HAVE NO BOOTS ON THE GROUND OR 100,000 BOOTS ON THE GROUND…can’t do anything in between in their world. Plus, it serves to make the Conservatives look bad…” You don’t WANT to help the POOR?” (as if) “You want 100K soldiers risking death?” (as if)
Not sure I’m being clear here, but we all know they do NOT believe in the American dream for ALL PEOPLE.

Had dinner with a liberal friend last night….I had to remind her that Republicans give more charitable money…she said “that’s because they’re rich!” I had to remind her that some Lefties even think Wall St is Conservative and told her that’s not the case AT ALL. “really?” And she is NO DUMMIE, believe me.
Mal, we’re fighting a steep uphill battle. I’m glad for your support!

John, I MISSED THAT! GREAT POINT “the REAL WORLD”…good catch. I couldn’t agree with you more on what you write about going to a lib college. Good points.

(except I love the German language and always hate to hear that monster speaking it, tho it’s Austrian German :-))
Yes, Obama might as well be saying this “you will make everybody LIKE YOU…we can’t have anybody thinking on their own…get out there and make more liberals” PTUI

  6. Kid says:

Z, Many more democrat millionaires in congress than repubs.

  7. geeez2014 says:

I thought that was the case. It’s just a big typical leftwing lie about the RICH REPUBLICANS……….they WERE in days of old, but there have always been very rich Dems, too. Typical, right?
and this woman does PR work for Bobby Shriver (Kennedy!) She should KNOW from RICH DEMOCRATS!
Somebody has to get out there and reach the public with FACTS.

  8. geeez2014 says:

Kid. I nominate you, by the way. 🙂

  9. Kid says:

    Z, I’m on it baby !

  10. Michelle is from the same club that brings us terms like “micro-aggression” and “trigger words” and sets free speech areas on campus to protect the poor little eloi darlings from anything but group think and then tells them to go out and find other views.
Because they silenced them for the four years they could have been talking to them!
Boy are they in for a surprise.

  11. skudrunner says:

Reminds me of a country song “It’s an ole Family Tradition”
Can someone remind me when hillary was part of the middle class that she has so much experience with. Or for that matter michelle obama, raised in a middle class neighborhood, went to a magnate HS and to Princeton and Haaaaavard.

    Talk about two phoneys.

  12. geeez2014 says:

Only in the new America could anthrax be accidentally shipped to nine states….unbelievable. Oh, I don’t know; my feeling is if it’s ANTHRAX you’re sending, you don’t rely on a mailroom clerk to send it…YOU do it and you are very careful. And if a non-mailroom clerk DID send it out, that person needs to GO “just in case”….we don’t fool around with LIVE ANTHRAX! Or we didn’t.

    Skugrunner; BIG phonies….no doubt.

Ed…Good point…I’m guessing it’s FINE with ol’ Michelle if kids go out and hear differing opinions NOW, but do NOT let their profs offer a differing opinion than LEFTWING.

  13. silverfiddle says:

So, is she going to start her own armed communist insurgency when her husband leaves office?

Her fiery speeches rival those of Mussolini, Farrakhan and Fidel Castro.

  14. geeez2014 says:

SO, now that Rand Paul has said it’s Conservative Republicans who created ISIS, whether YOU think it’s true or not, how many times do you think the leftwing media will use that?

1000? 100000? 100000000? Or add them up and that’s your number?

I find Paul self serving and loathsome. Always have, but never quite this much.

  15. geeez2014 says:

SF, there are those who want her to run for President…
She’s quite a piece of work. I guess that means i’m a racist now, right? 🙂
Do you know there are liberals who call many of us racists though we’d vote for ANY Black man or woman we found agreed with us and these libs STILL don’t get the irony in their name calling?
That never fails to amaze me.

  16. ” I find Paul self serving and loathsome. Always have, but never quite this much.”

  17. Kid says:

I don’t trust Paul as far as I can throw him and I’m an excellent judge of people. fwiw. Plus he’s one of those naturally permed looking hair guys. Never met a single one worth a damn.

  18. geeez2014 says:

I was a tad nervous about saying that about Rand Paul because I think some of you are fans….so thanks, Ed and Kid. I’m just outraged that he’d put himself on this pedestal and risk the party;…saying we’ve never reached out (as if we were welcome!? tho I DO think it’s good to reach out to minority communities, etc.), saying this about ISIS being OUR fault when the left loves to dwell on Republican hawks (which loses us a lot of voters…as if anybody loves war?), etc etc.
    This is beyond bad.

  19. Kid says:

Z, I don’t think many of these prople (candidates) have much of a bead on reality. Out of the whole bunch of them, maybe 1 or 2 have the slightest chance of getting elected. Lindey Graham???? Wowsa, what planet is he on, ditto huckleberry and christie. Maybe there is an opportunity to pocket some campaign cash and that’s why they’re doing it but if these clowns actually think they might get elected, this is a statement about their [lack of] mental health.

  20. geeez2014 says:

Kid, I know! When Graham announced he’s very interested I simply could NOT believe it. What a twerp.

I feel even worse about Perry; I heard him speak recently and literally thought he’d gone insane…he’s got a wild look in his eyes and scares the H out of me… THAT man is off his rocker, I don’t care HOW well things went in TX when he was gov. I was flabbergasted at his mannerisms…

Christie has NO CHANCE. Huckabee has a better chance than all the above, but NO CHANCE, you’re right.

WHo do you think could smack down any Dem? Does Bloomberg have a chance? He’s supposedly talking about running now, too…with BILLIONS behind him and he’s a Dem now….

  21. Kid says:

    Ted Cruz

  22. silverfiddle says:

Paul has a point, but he needs to damn Obamalamadingdongs as well. There never were any “good” Syrian rebels.

I could never get any lib to explain to me how these ragtag bands we arm and train in Syria were going to take out Assad’s Russian-backed regime while simultaneously wiping out ISIS. It made no sense, but the castrated scribes in the press wouldn’t ask the questions.

George Bush broke the dam when he took out Saddam. Stupidest move we made since the wall fell, and its all been downhill from there.

Any candidate who talks about us having to be tough in the Middle East gets a beer can at the tv screen. I’m tired of air-brained tv personalities, rightwing blowhards and pampered pols talking all tough when they’ve never fired so much as a bb gun.

Beware armchair generals beating war drums who have never been to war.

  23. geeez2014 says:

Kid, the media’s painting Cruz like a crazed Christian NUT, so I am not so sure. I sure do like the way he tells it straight, though. Here’s hoping.

SF: Paul might have a BIG point but if Conservatives are going to beat the lefties in 2016, we don’t need a Republican talking about how terrible we are.

Then there are the guys who have gone from America, vets, to fight ISIS.
Bush wasn’t the first president to oust a guy who was bad for his country…. has it ever worked out? I’m not sure. It SURE didn’t work when the Shah left Iran, did it. THAT was the nightmare of the century. It SURE hasn’t worked in Pakistan… or Egypt.
Those tribals need dictators to keep them from mayhem. And it used to be mayhem to their own, but now it’s aimed at US.

  24. geeez2014 says:

EVERYBODY wanted Saddam down. I don’t blame Bush for that, I really don’t. I believe Woodward when he said he’s dug for 18 months to find if Bush lied and he, a liberal, says he did not. And I’m a little tired of folks slamming Bush as if he invented the whole Iraq thing. I KNOW, Mr Z and I were against America going in (Him more than me), but everybody thought Saddam was a threat to the whole region, and possibly us….and I blame the intel.
“According to Woodward, Bush himself was skeptical about the presence of weapons of mass destruction and urged caution on then-CIA Director George Tenet lest he stretch the case that there were.”

We can’t argue Iraq again and again on our blogs but it always sounds like people say BLAME BUSH as if he’s the ONLY person who screwed up in those days; and he clearly was not.
Tony Blair was right there with him, too. etc

  25. John M. Berger says:

    Hey, how about:

    1) Resolution 1441 adopted by the UN Security Council to intervene
    2) H.R.4655,signed by Bill Clinton (Iraq Regime Change)
    3) House Joint Resolution HJ 114 RH authorizing Military force-several reasons given for reasons other than WMD
    4) WMD transported to Syria ? (They have them, where did they get them?)

  26. Mustang says:

SF in his last comment is exactly right.

  27. Baysider says:

Well, that speech confirms the echo chamber of most campuses. They have NEVER been exposed to other ideas.

  28. Kid says:

    Z, two things are given.

A republican candidate who is not believed to be a Conservative doesn’t have the chance of Lindsey Graham being confused for a male.

The media is going to go total Ape on anyone they even think is Conservative and the more Conservative, the more Ape.

We can win, e Must win, we WILL Win. 😉

  29. silverfiddle says:

@ Z: ” It SURE didn’t work when the Shah left Iran, did it. THAT was the nightmare of the century.”

Amen to that. Carter was a disaster.

I don’t say Bush lied in invading Iraq. I simply say it was either criminally stupid, hopelessly naive or a nefarious corporate plot. Take your choice. There was not way that was going to end well. Saddam Hussein was a tyrannical bastard, but he was a known quantity, and he protected the rest of the ME from Iran. Taking him out was a disaster of Biblical proportions.

We need to get out of the ME and let them sort it out. We are not helping. We are wasting our time, treasure, and blood on people who hate us.

  30. If you remember, it was Bush SENIOR that failed to get rid of Saddam when we went in to protect Kuwait from his taking over their oil. Kuwait mainly produces oil and has little or no military for protection, so we went in by sea, no troops on the ground, did the job via fighter jets, then withdrew, believing Saddam was finished. I’ve always believed “W” simply looked for any excuse to achieve his dad’s goal. Our intel simply furnished it for him.

  31. Kid says:

Mal, Stormin Norman Schwarzkopf was actually in there with a lot of troops in the 1990 Desert Shield and Desert Storm operations

  32. geeez2014 says:

I don’t totally agree, SF or Mustang. It’s easy to talk like this now, not so easy then.

If anything, I think it was a hopelessly naive situation where our intel actually believed in the ‘blue thumbs’, that Iraqis would be thrilled and able to take over. Which they were…for five minutes. The toppling of that statue was a HUGELY happy event.
Our intel was absolutely sleeping to think tribes like those people would just get back to living calmly. When one is naive enough to think that the dictator’s terrible but the ONLY one who’s terrible, then we have problems.
I put the blame squarely on our (and ISraeli and English and others’) INTEL.
Don’t forget…we’re stupid enough to have taught “High Arabic” to spies. dumbest thing I EVER HEARD.

SF: I used to think we need to just GET OUT. Now I think our getting out can only be accompanied by carpet bombing so we are not hit badly as a consequence. Which we will be soon, anyway, I’m sure.

Kid…I’ve been trying to avoid saying anything like “Lindsey Graham being confused for a male.” but am glad someone finally did. Imagine THAT? He MUST be straight if he’s dumb enough to be gay and think running for president won’t out him. Or maybe he thinks that if he does come out, dems will suddenly find him intelligent enough and agree with his viewpoints because he’s gay? 🙂

John Berger; the ONLY thing Mr. Z agreed with was that WMD were shipping to Syria. He firmly believed that when we kept seeing delays to going into Iraq…delays long enough to facilitate that….he totally believed the Military man from IRaq who testified that. Mr. Z lived in Iraq for about a year (months here, months there…coming and going back to Germany) and had a real bead on that place.
He also was involved in “things military”, let’s just say, and he’d have guys at meetings and, suddenly, (during Saddam), they’d never come back to the meeting the next day and never be reachable. Ever again. EVER.

  33. Kid says:

Z, I’m not suggesting Graham is gay, He just doesn’t impress me as being a male. He projects no strength whatsoever. And I haven’t paid all that much attention to the guy, just a little comment to amuse myself.

  34. Kid, what am I remembering then? I remember Bush having us in and out within a couple of days and I THOUGHT it was claimed at the time to be all from the sea and air. Was Schwarzkopf during the same time?

  35. Stormin Norman wasn’t in Kuwait, was he, Kid?

  36. Kid says:

    Mal, I’m not sure..

Desert Shield had the general in Saudi Arabia, then Desert Storm was the one involving kicking them out of Kuwait

Desert Storm right below the shield description. This was 1990, 1991.

If I think of what an all air campaign was, and there may have been one, I’ll come back.

  37. Kid says:

Mal, It looks like initially August of 1990, there was a a brief Air only campaign but a little later saddam was a very bad boy again so the ground war initiated January 1991. So, you are remembering correctly and that’s always a good thing at our age. Though I’m probably a Kid to you.

  38. Right, Kid. Bush underestimated Saddam’s position after his brief raid, hence “W” wanted to finish the job, me thinks! “See, Pop, I finished what you left undone!”

  39. Kid says:

Mal, I would not be surprised that was the case.
