The Pope Again……..

pope francis 2Our good buddy SilverFiddle blogged on the Pope the other day.  To me, the only conclusion thinking people could reach, after reading SF’s excellent piece and the comments page, on what the Pope thinks about global warming and other questions, is that the Pope over reaches on matters one could say are clearly not his expertise, to put it charitably.

So, when I ran across this article on the Pope and weapons sales, I wanted to post it and weigh in on it….and I hope to hear your opinions, too.  I’m a little outraged, frankly, because my Mr. Z dealt in weapons (between you and me…ssshhhhh) and he was a very good Christian.

CAN one produce arms and be a Christian?  The Pope says (in front of ‘thousands of young’ ..and I add “impressionable”… people,’)   “It makes me think of … people, managers, businessmen who call themselves Christian and they manufacture weapons. That leads to a bit a distrust, doesn’t it?” he said to applause.”

He goes on to talk about the “Shoah,” or Holocaust, and how countries did little to help the Jews…“The great powers had the pictures of the railway lines that brought the trains to the concentration camps like Auschwitz to kill Jews, Christians, homosexuals, everybody. Why didn’t they bomb (the railway lines)?”

The first criticism I have is that most railroad lines were built before the war;  few people had any reason to know what was going on.  Most people don’t understand that it took a  long time before people realized what was happening to the Jews as they were ‘trained’ to their deaths… I’m not sure countries couldn’t have done more (I know there’s even debate today about whether Jews could have done more to escape the NAZI purge), but I think he needs better information to come to his conclusions and I don’t see that his conjecture is valuable in any way, shape or form.   He also included the Armenians in his condemnation of massacres but, this time, the article says that “Discussing World War One, he spoke of “the great tragedy of Armenia” but did not use the word “genocide”.

Yes, as you all know,  “Francis sparked a diplomatic row in April calling the massacre of up to 1.5 million Armenians 100 years ago “the first genocide of the 20th century,” prompting Turkey to recall its ambassador to the Vatican.”    So, this time,  he avoided that term ‘genocide’;  God forbid he ticked off the Turks again with the truth, huh?  I’d be happier if he had the guts to call it as it really was again, to stand by his words.

pope francis 3

Some of you remember my unhappiness when he was picked as Pope.  I’m not Catholic but I follow this all closely and have to admit I love the Pomp and Circumstance…I do.  So, when this Pope decided to ride the Metro and not live in the lovely Vatican apartments, etc., most people looked at it as populist, “a man of the people!” I looked at it as a man who didn’t take seriously the grandeur of the position he’d been put in, something many Catholics look up to as they consider him a representative of GOD, after all.  But, that’s not what I’d like to discuss today.   And yes, I know most of you disagree with me and I’m very happy you got your populist, touch-feely Pope…but………

The remarks above have confirmed that he’s not ready for the BIG TIME, particularly because young people are swallowing it up as they swallow the bull pucky they hear from lib profs in their schools…and, while Catholics view a Pope’s selection as ‘divine intervention,’ and I’d never condemn that or even remotely suggest otherwise, I wonder what God was doing with this one!   But, then, I often wonder what the heck God is doing… very often,  so………..

Comments?  CAN a person be involved with making, procuring or selling weapons and be a faithful Christian?

  1. Pope Francis is over the line when he states that weapons manufacturers cannot be Christians! He doesn’t know these people’s hearts! I suggest that the Pope open his Bible and do some reading about that principle in the Word.

Linking his outrageous statement with the Holocaust is a serious flaw in logic. Worse, it’s the Pope speaking along the same lines as Obama (Gun control!)

    From the article:

He spoke of the “tragedy of the Shoah,” using the Hebrew term for the Holocaust.

“The great powers had the pictures of the railway lines that brought the trains to the concentration camps like Auschwitz to kill Jews, Christians, homosexuals, everybody. Why didn’t they bomb (the railway lines)?”

Is the Pope suggesting bombing gun factories?

Guns? So let’s say no one ever manufacturers a gun again. Then what, manufacturers of baseball bats, knives, machetes, hammers, screwdrivers…………… How about Rocks? God manufactured those.. I’m no expert, but I believe the Bible has no problem with our defending ourselves from evil.

Then I hope he’s prepared to go kiss the butt and beg their forgiveness of the family and friends of every woman who is raped and murdered because they no longer had a means to defend themselves from vermin who now know they’re disarmed. Not to mention anyone unable to defend themselves from some vermin who bust through the door with a couple baseball bats. Like the vermin would be disarmed..

There is no one stupider than someone who thinks law abiding citizens should be disarmed.

Finally, all this nonsense and not a peep from this guy about how the moslems are invading every other country on Earth with full intention to, at minimum, breed them out and impose sharia. And this idiot, like obama, thinks a warmer Earth is a problem ? A warmer Earth is a good thing and that’s based on history.

John! “since when are bombs not weapons?” OMG!! THAT rocks. Yes, it’s okay to make or buy arms to do what the Pope wants done but not okay as a Christian to make or buy arms! That is BRILLIANT. Thanks for that!

SF…WOW WOW WOW….I am saddened, too. I didn’t always like everything Pope Benedict said or did, but I mostly did; I thoroughly respected him, at least. Of course, my German husband was thrilled about a German Pope!
FASCINATING information about disarming before holocaust; thanks for that. You know, we ALL KNOW the Pope doesn’t want anybody dead, but if he’d just start THINKING THROUGH his stances…THAT is my beef.
I WANT to respect the Pope as I have in the past with other Popes. I truly do.

Kid, I can’t pick out a single comment I don’t disagree with or don’t admire how you put your point! Excellent. Yes, will they ban knives for all the MANY knife killings next?

AOW….you make a great point, too. Yes, let’s BOMB gun factories! I think he’s definitely reading too much Huffington Post, that’s for SURE! 🙂

EVERYBODY: I Heard KT MacFarland this morning talking about the profile of all 11 terrorists we’ve rounded up recently….I don’t remember exactly, but here was what she said “All 11 share a profile…well educated, use social media, have traveled to the middle east, lived here for some time.” I was looking at all 11 photos of the creeps and ALL OF THEM ARE ARABS, which can only lead us to think ALL OF THEM ARE MUSLIMS.
And even SHE didn’t mention that! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? IS KT AFRAID, TOO, of being NON PC?

So, Muslims…take heart; the Pope admits Christians do it, too! Okay, you’re killing thousands of people NOW in the name of allah, but Christians have done it, too, ..OK, it’s hundreds of years ago, and they didn’t kill in the name of Jesus, because Jesus didn’t say to kill infidels, but…………

I’m sure he’s got good intentions and there’s some truth in what he says. However I expect spirituality from spiritual leaders and not lectures about material things. We have politicians for that.

As far a weapons, one can build weapon to get rid of evil in the world like Isis and this is a good thing obviously.

I’m reading the Bible almost every day now and I don’t need a pope anymore.

I guess the Pope missed this point in human development? I’m surprised he’s embraced that sappy, dopey, 60’s mantra that the rest of the world failed to embrace outside of San Francisco? And I think Christians learned to stop laying down after their experiences and days in the Roman Coliseum? Or around the times of the Crusades. Mankind has been using their tools as weapons since the beginning of time and since Cain and Abel.

I’m sorry to see the pope stoop to these hack worn tropes. Of course one can produce arms and be a Christian. I don’t believe one can traffick in them to irresponsible parties, though, and be a Christian. And THAT is the 2nd stage thinking the pope’s not engaging. For to disarm the ‘good’ guys is like handing arms to the bad guys.

  16. I remember hearing the German Gestapo asking why the Jews weren’t fighting back but accepting their fate. This is what happens when an evil government wants to destroy an unarmed people or country. So who was able to come in and rid them of Hitler? Countries with weapons. LOTS of weapons. Sure, an ideal society would be one without ANY weapons whatsoever. No one. But we know that is wishful thinking, so I’ll stick with allowing good citizens to arm themselves to protect their families.
It reminds me of a decal I saw on the back window of a pickup that showed Smokey the Bear holding a rifle, and read “Defend you right to arm Bears”. I got a chuckle!

I too am not Catholic, but I have developed over many years a deep respect for priests who serve as combat chaplains. Some of these were Jesuits and some have acquitted themselves with great courage in the service of Jesus and our wounded and dying. These men were very different from the bureaucrats who exist in the Vatican. Whenever I run across someone who begins reciting revisionist history, I realize that this person is pursuing an agenda. Whether personal or political, it always benefits, or reinforces, what he or she believes. If this Pope is interested in talking about the failures of Christians to protect the Jews, he may want to begin that conversation with an explanation how Pope Pius VII received intelligence about the Holocaust, and yet did nothing. Well of course, Popes in the past have been happy to see Jews destroyed, so this was normal for the Vatican, but it is hardly a Christian behavior. It seems to me that there are actually two sides on the issue of firearms. On the right hand, there are gun owners —on the left, there are victims.

As for Billy Graham’s grandson, let someone who is without sin step forward to rebuke him.

You are so right that we all sin, but we’re not all in the limelight with vampires licking their chops waiting for the slightest transgression. Billy Graham’s grandson can do better than that, or keep it private…he should do better than that. I do admire his telling the truth.
That we are all sinners and have no right to rebuke is right…that we can discern is another story.I do agree with you on the Pope and the church’s history with Jews and on guns.
