Aren’t Opinions Free Speech?

craig james FOX

THIS INFORMATION really bothered me.  FOX Sports fired Craig James 2 days after it hired him because he said he didn’t approve of gay marriage 2 years ago while running for the senate.  And he never spoke of his opinions on the air!

Fox Sports Southwest Senior Vice President of Communications Lou D’Ermilio says “We just asked ourselves how Craig’s statements would play in our human resources department. He couldn’t say those things here.”   Who cares how it would “play” in their human resources department?   A man can’t have said things while making a senate run and be on television in his future?

Are there not two ways of looking at anything in America anymore?   When is this going to STOP?  They’ll probably now say he hates gays, too…wait for it.

Craig James says “I said nothing about my belief system on the air at Fox Sports. So, the fact that they reached back in my past nearly eighteen months and responded to a comment about my biblical belief in natural marriage as a candidate — that’s troubling.”

I think it’s VERY troubling, too.  How about you?   Will anybody be able to say anything in the future…about anything?

And I think he’ll WIN this case, do you?

  1. I’m not a lawyer, so I don’t know if he’ll win or not.
Often, there are “morals” clauses that refer to your “representation” of your employer.
This would be an “immorals” clause.
It bothers me that a “sports” network would find his view troubling.
I wonder if O’Reilly or Hannity will opine.

  2. Joe says:

I guess President Obama could never get a gig at Fox Sports either since he said the same in the past

  3. Dissenters to the agenda — whatever the agenda — will be banned from the town square. We who dissent will be forced to conform by silencing us.

I’m sure that, right now, a lot of people are self-muzzled so as to keep their jobs and their circles of friends.

Moreover, the agenda will not change if there is no good option for whom to vote.

  4. silverfiddle says:

What AOW said. And the best part, from the sheeple herders-in-charge perspective, is that we are punishing each other and keeping ourselves in line, so no lashes or jackboots from authority are necessary.

FOX is on firm legal ground. Employment is a private contract between a company and an individual.

Intolerance in the name of Tolerance. Welcome to the Brave New World.

  5. Case in point of being shut out of the town square: Texas Christian University student punished for criticizing Islam, Baltimore riots.

    Check out this sentence therefrom:

TCU is a private school and as such they are not bound by the First Amendment.

  6. Reminds me of when the newspaper I used to work for ran my pro-Reagan opinion piece in the Sunday Editorial lead. I had more than a few people whisper to me that my time was limited. It was. The MSM is a wing of the dem party, no question. These leftists will not allow dissention.

  7. geeez2014 says:

Ed, the good thing is that he didn’t represent his employer….he had the job 2 days and said this 18 months ago while running for the senate…but yes, there are MORALS CLAUSES, which brings up another great question:

DO MORALS CLAUSES ALWAYS FAVOR LEFTWING SECULAR THINKING ONLY? What was IMMORAL of him saying he thought marriage should be between a man and a woman, right?

I’m sure O’Reilly will bloviate and Hannity might opine!

    Joe; PERFECT

SF; My point is less the legalities of FOX Sports and more the amazing point that nobody can have given a personal opinion 18 months ago and work a job like this….that giving ones opinion (no swearing, no unkindness) isn’t supported by our First Amendment.
We simply can’t just NOT LIKE A GUY for an opinion he gave 18 months ago (If anybody really heard that and remembered), he must be FIRED. Anything for RATINGS…the left, and the LGBT community would make such a stink “You know what that guy SAID?” that they (gasp!) will lose VIEWERS $$$

See, this is another case, come to think of it, like the Saudi Sheikh on the beach in France I posted about the other day; MONEY RULES over all else, over the Constitution, over a person’s feelings, over his employment, over what many feel are ethics and decency.

This certainly is Intolerance in the name of Tolerance………it works because of the Left….

AOW: Was just about to add that to the post or a comment, so I’m glad you did.
Yes, that kid at TCU is banned from classrooms (he can study on line classes) for having written some tough stuff on Social media: The school says “TCU is a private institution—and thus not bound to follow the First Amendment” A private institution is not bound to follow the CONSTITUTION?

    http://reason.com/blog/2015/07/29/texas-christian-university-suspended-stu

Jerry.. .;..and if I wasn’t afraid I’d get the treatment Huckabee got, I’d say something here like “Gee, this is very like Nazi Germany, isn’t it…..we can only give the leaders’ opinions, the opinions of LGBT or MUSLIMS, or we’re in DEEP TROUBLE”

  8. cube says:

I find it deplorable that liberal progressives are in charge of what constitutes ‘free’ speech. How did we let it get this bad? Perhaps from the idea of not making waves because we fear the backlash from the liberal media. That fear-driven attitude must change. Stand up and yell that the emperor has no clothes… or a non-sociopathic brain.

  9. geeez2014 says:

cube, I believe that’s what SilverFiddle was alluding to above, too…….when he said “we are punishing each other and keeping ourselves in line, so no lashes or jackboots from authority are necessary.” I’d forgotten to point that out, so thanks for your comment that reminded me.

You’re both right, of course; we let this happen.
Heck, Ducky used to call me EVANGELICAL as if it were synonymous with HATEFUL BIGOT.when we’d argue any point, not just Christian points…..I let myself get angry and defensive for a few years, until I told him that’s really a compliment…and he stopped. He’ll do it again, but he hasn’t used that nonsense for a while. I guess he finally learned SOMETHING.

Yes, WE allow this…I live in a liberal area of Los Angeles and when two conservatives meet, I found we LITERALLY lower our voices in a restaurant or coffee house, imagine? And now we’re finally saying “Hey, we’re whispering…that’s NUTS”
Yes, and it’s like the SS is watching, or the Stassi.

And the Left calls US “FASCISTS?” That’s truly hilarious.

  10. FB says:

Free speech means speech free of anything we don’t like. That’s the new meaning.

  11. cube says:

We agree that our voices need to be heard AND heeded. Winning back the biased liberal press won’t be easy, but we sure as heck need to try and bring it back into the ‘fair and balanced’ fold.

  12. silverfiddle says:

Z: It’s crazy. Brendan Eich was forced from his own company he founded when leftwing activist proglodytes found out he had contributed to the anti-gay marriage initiative in California.

This is a cleaned-up, modern-day version of the French Revolution-Pol Pot-Taliban blasting away statuary all rolled into one.

The best way to fight it is to laugh in their faces every chance they get and tell them to shove their ‘White Privilege’ BS where the sun don’t shine.

  13. Kid says:

This is NAZI fascism, plain and simple. Don’t let any opinions other than state approved into view.

  14. Kid says:

Z, yea, always accuse your opponent of what you are. And do it first. We’re at war and the repubblekins think they’re in a circus tent. Won’t stop me from voting against democrats. Its as fun to vote against as it might be For someone with the right POV.

  15. geeez2014 says:

FB “We” being the left. I don’t remember the Right ever pulling anything like this…
Not that the Right’s innocent of everything by a long shot, but not keeping people silenced.

cube, and the Left so scoffs ‘fair and balanced’ because FOX uses that as their ‘motto’…the left just can’t STAND hearing two sides of anything.

SF…and Kid…yup…. ISIS, TALIBAN, FRENCH REV., POL POT, etc…that’s the leftist fascism of keeping the Right in check.
    “Don’t let them TALK!”

By the way…anybody here ever seen a Republican candidate cordon herself off as she walked to make sure the media stays away?
    Annd STILL they protect her.

  16. geeez2014 says:

I was just looking at all the articles praising Obama for his CLEAN AIR INITIATIVE…brilliant planning before the elections this year…the response to the GOPs intelligent push back, trying to protect the ECONOMY AND carefully treat our environment….the Fascist Left will be saying “THE RIGHT DOESN’T CARE ABOUT CLEAN AIR”

SOME DAY, all Americans will say “Hey, wait…….She’s a WOMAN Republican, she can’t be against women’s health! ” and “Hey, wait….she does a lot of good at her church, she’s not a hateful CHristian” and “Hey, wait, families DO do better with a mom and dad…that’s not nutty” and “Hey, Republicans breathe, too…..they can’t be against clean air” and “Republicans need health care, too…and lots of them are poor, they must not really want to hurt people they just must have other ideas for health care” or “HEy, that Republican’s BLACK, how can he hate Blacks?”

You think that’ll EVER happen in the community of HARD HEADED INDOCTRINATED LIBERALS?

  17. Kid says:

Z, exactly, and the qualifications to run for office? married to a rapist former president, bought a NY senate seat, was given a Secy State job as a reward to bow wow out of the 2008 election…
Well, anyone can run, but the intellectual capital of the left in this country wouldn’t be able to buy half a soft taco from the bargain bin.

  18. Mustang says:
The anger toward the communist left among conservatives is palpable; yet, we blog and the left laughs at us. As to free speech, he has it. He exercised it. And he has learned that there are consequences to offering one’s own point of view. Just as there were consequences during the Revolution. Those who stood up for enlightened principles were hunted down, tried, and executed for treason. This is what the political left wants for us, as well … all clearly outlined by George Orwell.
  19. Z said “SOME DAY, all Americans will say “Hey, wait…….” then lists positive attributes.
That’s the point of my “I’m your neighbor” ad, and the NRA’s “We’re the good guys” ad campaign.
Let people know who you are.
I just left a meeting of engineers (many young) and announced that I’m an Evangelical who believes in Creationism.
No derision. They know what I know. I was pointing out that idiots evolve and that was the only evolution I believe in.

  20. Mustang summed it up.
Free Speech is a right, not a privilege.
    It can cost you.
Every now and then it must be paid for.

  21. Silverlady says:

The wacko Liberals/Progressives/Democrats/Socialists/Communists have the bit in their teeth & it’s like trying to stop a runaway horse. You’ve got to run ’em into a wall, but get off first, or turn ’em in smaller & smaller circles tiring ’em out. The Conservatives have backed down & off so many times they’ve forgotten how to take charge. Like parents with naughty small children who think their antics are cute when little, but putting on the brakes with delinquent & disrespectful teenagers doesn’t work too well.

  22. geeez2014 says:

Free Speech is the right of ALL OF US and it’s about time the Left and Atheists and everyone else woke up to that fact. WE believe Leftists and Atheists have free speech, why can’t they acknowledge the same about us?

For example, I believe anyone denying and deriding the fact that ALL LIVES MATTER can’t possibly understand true free speech or freedom of any kind. And is a huge threat to both.

Ed “they know what I know”?? and good that you said what you did.

  23. geeez2014 says:

Silverlady, i think Conservatives have forgotten to get OFF the horse… and we’re hitting the wall, too. And yes, I see SO many little kids ruling their roost and their parents sucking up to them so terribly, I can’t help but think “Brother, are those parents going to pay the price..” Sad.

America is paying the price because the Conservatives haven’t put their BIG BOY pants on since Reagan left the White House…..
Not sure what can be done when we’ve lost a couple of generations to indoctrination, hate, and no understanding of the Constitution.

  24. Mustang says:

Speaking of big boy pants, Z … observe how the GOP establishment is treating Cruz. The long knives are out and I will be surprised if he can win reelection to the US senate.

  25. alec says:

So many comments I agree with here. The only (small) addition I can make is something many already know – there are dirty little secrets in Republican back rooms. If anyone is going to save us, it won’t be them – no matter how much we might pretend they’re the good guys.

There are good guys – some awake, some partially awake, and some still sleeping. The hour’s late. It’s getting to be showtime, aka put up or be quiet time. And it’s going to cost all of us who are willing to stand up.

I love the lines to this hymn, even if it was written by someone we’d call a liberal these days:

    Once to every man and nation, comes the moment to decide, In the strife of truth with falsehood, for the good or evil side;

And the choice goes by forever, ’twixt that darkness and that light. Then it is the brave man chooses while the coward stands aside,

    Though the cause of evil prosper, yet the truth alone is strong; Though her portion be the scaffold, and upon the throne be wrong;

Yet that scaffold sways the future, and behind the dim unknown, Standeth God within the shadow, keeping watch above His own.
    -James Russell Lowell

We’re getting to be in heroic days, whether we like it or not.

  26. Alec, you remind me that Mordor is on the horizon.

  27. geeez2014 says:

Mustang, the GOP has been hateful toward Cruz since he whispered a possible run. I remember Karl Rove SO nastily but rather subtly slamming Cruz six months ago….Even I was a bit surprised; and I think you’re right………they’re scared to death of his honesty, brains and unwillingness to toe their line. They’re harder on him than Trump, aren’t they.
It would be disastrous if they squeeze him out of the senate…just what we need; a GOP that’ll jeopardize the majority because they’re bent out of shape by a guy with integrity.

Why do YOU think they’re so hard on Cruz?

alec, you’re right; some of my readers, and even I oftentimes, sound like big REPUBLICAN GOP FANS, but mostly, we’re not. Still, we have little space here to qualify every statement with “tho I’m not nuts about the Republicans..” (tho I do that fairly frequently), so we don’t sometimes….

Funny you should mention ‘back rooms’…..I have often said that ‘smoke filled back rooms of politicians’ are highly underrated…..that’s where civility happened…when DC politicians didn’t go home every weekend because travel wasn’t quite so easy….their kids went to school together (dems and reps), their wives had luncheons, they had cocktail parties in the evening…that promoted CIVILITY. There seems to be little of that now….and I rue the day when those back rooms of smoke and conversation stopped being a place to truly work things out for this country. Remember the days of Reagan and his friendships with O’Neal and Moynihan…in the days of good Democrats who’d be voting Republican today if they say the socialism in the Dem party now.
I LOVE that hymn…when I went to a Lutheran church, we sang that and I miss it (the church and the hymn!)

Ed…Tolkein’s MORDOR? How so? I’m not too familiar with it…..

  28. Alec said: “We’re getting to be in heroic days, whether we like it or not.”
In the Lord of the Rings, the Hobbits, who just wanted to live a quiet life, had heroism thrust on them by the times, as the evil of Mordor loomed on the horizon, literally and figuratively.

  29. geeez2014 says:

Mordor is a region in Lord of the Rings, right? So the land of Mordor was evil, yes?
So what you’re saying is we Americans want to live a quiet life but we may have heroism thrust on us because of the evil like that in Mordor?
Am I finally getting it? 🙂
(email me about Scheri, please…let me know how she is?) thanks

  30. Kid says:

Alec, I hope any and every sane person knows how evil the repubblkins are and kow that the democrats are 1000 times evil. Yes, we need a new party – a new government from the bottom up, but in the meantime I hops enough people will be focused enough to vote Against democrats

  31. alec says:

Yes Kid, of course you’re right about the R’s and the D’s. When the last election came around someone said to me, Voting for the lesser of two evils is still voting for evil. I can’t get that out of my head.

  32. Kid says:

Alec, I used to waffle on that myself for the same reason, but I live to vote against Democrats. I will probably never get a chance to vote For someone.

  33. cube says:

Kid said he will probably never get a chance to vote For someone… not unless there’s another Reagan.

  34. Kid says:

Cube, I would trepidaciously vote for Cruz, Jindal, Walker in that order. Else it’s back to voting against evil fugly democrap human garbage life and civilization destroyers.
