Your behavior and the government……..

HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THIS???  Check out these lines from the linked article!:

“A new executive order from President Obama directs all government agencies to use psychological science and data to help connect more Americans to government programs.

The order instructs government agencies to use “behavioral science”— a tactic used by Obama’s political campaigns to harness data from their supporters to target them effectively.”

Our friend Ray Cole emailed this to me and I think his comment with the link was correct:  “This just sounds so wrong.”    Of course, if you’re into mind control and big government, this suits you fine, but………….

What do YOU think???

Z (thanks, Ray)

    Nothing new here, Z.

It’s not mind control, it’s just marketing. Red sports cars sell better by nearly two to one over any other color. So what color are most sports cars by all manufacturers? Red. Who knew?

What level of grocery shelf do shoppers look at when browsing for goodies at the Piggly Wiggly? Eye level. They don’t look up or down at first. What spots on the grocer’s shelves do you find Kellogg’s cereal, vs the store brand? Eye level, of course.

Using psychology to sell stuff has been around forever. Obama is no different than anybody else trying to get the message out. Nothing nefarious here, Z.

    Good try, though.

Fredd, it’s not easy to accept, but marketing is deeply related to mental conditioning. Terms like “mind control” make you think of Manchurian Candidate assassins and disregard the more common (and dangerous to freedom) applications. A little study on Edward Bernays (the son-in-law of Sigmund Freud) and the history of public relations will open up this whole sordid world and how it has influenced the course of the 20th Century, and now the 21st.

I wish “it’s only marketing” comforted me.

As Fredd said, it is marketing, but it is also psychological conditioning. The Spanish language has it right and uses the word “propaganda” for “advertisement.”

    Go google “sunstein nudge”

To give credit where due, one has to admit that forcibly taking one quarter (or more) of your income in taxes and using that against you in order to obtain even more swag, calling brainwashing programs “education” to prepare children for the onslaught of Big Brother Maxims, is quite genius. What it comes down to is this: all America has left is the Second Amendment —which is why the left is so keenly focused on it.

    fredd: “good try?” By ME?

    bocopro…good thinking!

    Cube…that’s what I think, too.

bunkerville….Sunstein; can’t wait to see what he’s up to. He’s awful, yes.

Alec..thanks, it doesn’t comfort me any, either.

Ed, I think this is a little more than that. And I cringe when I hear it on the radio, too. “Come sign up!” Oh, sure…got to get those freebies…and make us dependent.

    John…right!

Silverfiddle; glad you agree….this is a touch beyond…

Mustang; that’s a horrible thought!! I wish it weren’t so true!!!

THIS IS ABOUT GETTING MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ON THE GOVERNMENT ‘PAYROLLS’…..PULLING MORE AND MORE TO THE GOODIES, TO FEEL ENTITLED, JUST IN CASE THEY MISSED SOMETHING…PAVING THE WAY FOR BIGGER AND BIGGER GOVERNMENT.

OF COURSE THIS TYPE OF SCIENCE IS USED BY BUSINESSES……WE HAVE CHOICES IN BUSINESS.
IN GOVERNMENT, THOSE LOOKING FOR GOODIES CAN NOW FIND THEM EASIER …. THOSE WHO AREN’T ARE LURED, PERHAPS SUBLIMINALLY…BUT LURED NONETHLESS.

Yes, it IS marketing. But WHY are we MARKETING to get people into more government programs? That IS nefarious. Kid + 1. As SF points out it is conditioning our minds to just accept more and more from the government instead of ourselves and locally based, private institutions where we help each other. Can you spell D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-C-Y? Again, per Charles Murray, we are Coming Apart. THIS is one of his examples. Good one.

Kid….I love your point about those at home 🙂
And your comment about “just smart enough to run the machines” immediately brought SLAVERY IN THE FIELDS to my mind…weird, huh? I immediately saw people working in the fields, their masters only happy they were smart enough to do THAT, at least.

Here’s a variation on the theme: Santa Monica Considers Gas Warning Labels
That would be a plan to label gas station pumps in the city with warnings about climate change. (I’m not making it up: http://www.surfsantamonica.com/ssm_site/the_lookout/news/News-2015/Sept-2015/09_16_2015_Santa_Monica_Considers_Gas_Warning_Labels.html)

In the Old Testament the Lord commanded the Israelis to keep his commands before them at all times, on their doorpost, frontlets on their foreheads, on their arms and teaching their children. We know that’s so you are well indoctrinated and don’t wander off the plantation. This federal plan does it with dependency. The Soviet Monica plan just wants to make sure you see their faulty environmental message everywhere and stay on the green plantation.

Bay, THere is a restaurant that has a sing on its paper dispenser in the rest rooms. In green lettering including a drawing of trees it says “Please remember where these come from”. And I do – they come from trees specifically grown to make paper. We actually have more trees because of paper…

A word on marketing. We all use it. For any number of reasons. Some use it for good (Public Service Announcements, for what they are worth), and some use it for evil (ISIS markets their message to numb nut screwballs).

When I said that Obama was using marketing, and that his use of it was not nefarious, of course I meant that he can certainly use any method of getting out his message, and the technique of marketing is by itself not nefarious.

Now, OBAMA and HIS MESSAGE, taken on their own merits, of course everything that comes out of his mouth is suspect, and likely nefarious to some extent.

Alec says I am naive. Not even. I think we simply disagree on semantics. Marketing can be used by angels or devils. It’s just marketing, a persuasion technique. You get more flies using honey rather than vinegar, right? That cute little metaphor sums up the concept of marketing.

If you assume by my comment above that I am in Obama’s corner, you are naive. I hate the guy’s guts. But he certainly has a right to use whatever techniques are available to spread his putrid word.
