Earth, Wind and Fire…goodbye, Maurice White, RIP

Your band supplied my generation’s life with some super music.  This is the one that came to my mind when I heard you had passed on…Rest In Peace and thanks for the great times.

You were also a Shining Star…..Oh, BROTHER, is this one good, too!  Listening to this, if your shoulders are moving, you’re not living, which is kind of indelicate way to put it considering the circumstances, but I can’t help it, it’s the TRUTH.  Thanks for the memories….

Great stuff Ms Z. As an aside but not too much I hope – I loved Motown in those days, especially Sly and the Family. Motown Always had a positive message in the very racially charged 60’s (which obama and holder and lynch have returned us to). (and Sly has been living out of a van in LA now for years, still writing music but not publishing any apparently.)

Kid, I don’t think there COULD have been a bigger Motown fan than I was, and I loved Sly and the Family but I was a huge Temps and 4 Tops fan. One of the greatest music experiences I ever had was seeing them in a concert in a very small venue near here….doing each others’ big hits! AND, as the lights went down, someone was escorted to a seat about fifth row center and I knew his profile,as he walked by in the dark, to be the WONDERFUL Smokey Robinson…he got up and sang the last 15 minutes with them …WHAT a show. I think I have shared before, but just in case you hadn’t heard this, the very next day, I was at my chiropractor’s office, leaving through the waiting room and who was sitting there? SMOKEY ROBINSON. With a girlfriend (IVORY, he introduced me to her). I couldn’t not walk over and say “You won’t believe this but I was at the show last night” He said “Are you kidding ME?” And we talked a few minutes…..but the reason it was SO surprising we’d be in the same room the next morning is because it wasn’t at the Bowl or the Greek Theater where THOUSANDS go, but in a small Beverly Hills theater probably seating 500!! What an experience!
I’d heard about Sly…….I can’t imagine people not helping him get out of the van, unless he’s happy there?
And yes, think of MY FAVE, MR MARVIN GAYE!! (ooooh!!)..”What’s Going On?” hits on anti-war, a possible inference of race, etc….but nobody got crazed by the words…we all respected each other, gave them a listen and just loved the music! GREAT DAYS, GREAT MUSIC

How sad. It seems we’re losing all the really talented entertainers all of a sudden. Must be our ages.
I was a Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Sly And The Family Stone type of fan. Also, hugely a fan of Bread (remember them?). I like the ballads. Now the music is too nasty, boring or plain weird to enjoy and that includes what is supposedly “country”.
That’s neat that you actually got to speak to Smokey Robinson once Z. It makes them more human when we get to see them face-to-face. Growing up in Central Florida, near Disney World, in the mid 70’s, I got to meet Rock Hudson and Cary Grant once. Our High School was part of a group of other schools that sang for Christmas two years in a row. I was one of those selected to sing. Anyway, Rock and Cary where guest hosts (one each year) and we where allowed to meet & greet after the show. It was fun. We never forget those moments do we?!
Anyway, I’m deeply saddened to hear of Maurice White’s passing. I hope he was saved. And may his family be comforted during this difficult time.

Z, you sound like me reading my own thoughts about Motown. I loved them all. Each and every one. I could agree Marvin Gaye was the greatest. I loove What’s Going On, but also Inner City Blues. Still so relevant – the true test of any song. (Ball of Confusion by the Temptations is also Very relevant today – Marvin and this tune both from 1971.)
I’ve never met any of the musicians and your experience sound Fabulous.
As far as Sly – Everyday People

We’re losing them left and right it seems. 😦

Awesome stuff. The best era of music. I hadn’t heard of Mr White’s passing.RIP
There is a local motown band we see when they play in the area . That 70’s Band. They have traveled around as well.

By the way Hillary is angry at Bernie This is sweet

  8. geeez2014 says:

Sparky, I think Cary Grant was the best EVER……

Lisa..Hillary is angry at Bernie? what’s up?

Kid, LOVE Everyday People….great stuff. “What’s Going On?” MIGHT be one of my Top 5 favorite songs EVER.

  9. geeez2014 says:

Viburnum…I hadn’t thought of that…Frey, Bowie, Maurice White……well, they say it usually happens in 3’s.

Lisa, that’s a pretty darned good band; really good sounds….. that must be fun to see!

  10. Lisa says:

  12. geeez2014 says:

  13. geeez2014 says:

    MSNBC….man, I didn’t know…I hope a bit will be replayed tonight!

  14. geeez2014 says:

Lisa, I like that band’s theory that not stopping between songs is good for a crowd; I agree with them….sounds like real fun!

  15. Lisa says:

I was at that outdoor concert on that video.

  16. Lisa says:

Oh Did you hear Sanders? Good Lord he is a whacko

  17. Lisa says:

So sick of these 2 dividing

  18. geeez2014 says:

Ugh…accidentally hit a wrong button here and erased a long response to you, Lisa.

Well…VERY cool you were at the concert…are you IN the video?!!!

Sanders is really a whacko…an overgrown commie hippie jerk. And people love him because HE HAS INTEGRITY and HASN’T CHANGED…..that’s a reason to vote for someone? I’m ALL FOR INTEGRITY but he’s stuck to STUPID stances…stances that are communist, unmanageable, too expensive, etc etc.

Did you happen to notice Hillary’s impatience in her face when she said “That’s how Congress WORKS” …like “Of all the stupid things!!!”???

How hare IS it to run as a Democrat? PROMISE THEM EVERYTHING …never tell them our country will have another 10 TRILLION in debt in four years…..
There are a few Liberals at your place and Silverfiddle’s who aren’t utterly stupid; what’s their solution for paying for their idol’s ridiculous promises?

I was saddened to hear of Maurice White’s passing. The Earth Wind & Fire song, September, is special to me because I was driving and got so involved while singing it, that I ran a red light. I drove the rest of the way to my job in terror of another kind of red light trying to get me to pull over.

  22. geeez2014 says:

Cube, I think it’s amazing how songs can bring such a woosh of memories back! Good story!!

  23. Lisa says:

    No I wasn’t in that video Z
