Well, a safe and orderly society hasta has rules; everybody agrees widdat.
But sometimes events call for suspension of those rules. Por ejemplo: Speed limit is 45, but you got an accident victim bleedin to death in the back of your pickup. Do you maintain 45 mph while taking him to the trauma center, or do you temporarily paint outside the lines and go a little faster to save a life?
Rules don’t mean much if there are too many exceptions to ’em, but sometimes a li’l common sense out-justices a fixed regulation poorly designed for the exigency at hand. If we didn’t have people with the good judgment and courage to know the difference between what’s right and what’s legal, progress would grind to a halt, lives would be at risk, and debt would mount exponentially. (sorry, couldn’t resist)
My take on it all is that we still have honest people, patriots, and good samaritans, but many of ’em are either discouraged or intimidated by the wave of political correctness sweeping across the landscape, submerging honesty, drowning heroes, and sweeping away humanitarians.

Firing him was wrong. It’s unclear whether it was a flag on their property or his own. If on their property It gives them some leeway. A reprimand if that’s what they feel they must do, would have been plenty. I think there is more to this story regards his interaction with the company.

I sort of agree with Kid that we’re not hearing the whole story about his tenure with this company. Something is just off.
If he was, indeed, fired for just lowering the flag, then it was clearly wrong. Somehow I can’t see a company of that size doing that.

Flags fly at half staff half of Memorial Day. This wasn’t his flag – it was the company’s pole. Still, their reaction was atrocious. Any normal person would immediately understand why an alert employee corrected their oversight. The anonymous company employee cited “company policy” when he should have apologized for their oversight. I hope they get lots of pea rained on them.

Political affiliation? What’s that??? Hmmmm. Anybody think this soldier is a leftwing Democrat? Naaaa Disturbed by his passion for the flag and his political affiliation.. interesting. Had he spoken openly of being (GASP!) a REPUBLICAN?!
He probably reacted in an inappropriate way on FB, etc., but this was a terribly inappropriate response on TW’s behalf.
Again, I post this to show the inability of many to accept a point of view (patriotism) unlike their own.

Yeah, the response you put in bold was VERY disturbing. First of all, the affection ISN’T for the flag – but for fallen soldiers. It says a lot when showing that respect pigeonholes you into any political affiliation. Wow!

Baysider…exactly! What this says, and this happens a LOT from the Left, is that “You must be a rotten CONSERVATIVE if you’re patriotic”. I wonder if they realize what they’re inferring about themselves……OR if that’s exactly what they DO mean. That they are NOT for patriotism!

I’d like to get more details on this before making a judgment. However when I said to some people I loved the American flag recently and had a bunch of them in my house, they looked at me like some weirdo.

Teachers in America have done a dandy job of teaching our kids not to love the country OR the flag…and the little dopes don’t realize it’s the country’s goodness and opportunity that’s put food on their plates since they were babies. They’re in for a rude awakening when they see how what Obama has started continues…only to be made worse by their probable leftwing heroes like Hillary or Sanders. Did that get discussed? Who they’d vote for?

I agree with you, Z. Pride in your flag and country should not only be appreciated but encouraged by any employer, regardless of political preference. What’s next, firing an employee during the holidays for saying Merry Christmas? Or “BOO” at Halloween?

SO I WENT TO VOTE….I have a stomach thing going on, a little upset, and had a lot of errands, but only went to vote. Not because of the presidential race, Trump doesn’t need ME (tho I did hold my nose and vote for the jerk), but there were some very attractive-sounding Senator/judicial people on the ballot and I figure every vote does count for them.
I TELL YOU THIS BECAUSE: Right in front of me were a mother and daughter who’d come to vote who seemed very clearly at least part Hispanic. I heard the woman at the desk say “the Republican booths are over to the right…” When I got my ballot, I was behind the daughter who’d helped her mother with how to stick the ballot in the deal and when she stepped back, I put my arm on her shoulder and said “Good for you! We have to stick together” or something like that. She smiled and said “Ya, we do!”
When I was already in my car, they somehow came out behind me and said “Have a nice day” and I said “You, too, and TELL A FRIEND!” The young one said “Oh, I WILL!”
I wish I could have had a few minutes with her to hear why she’s a Republican but sometimes that works and other times, it doesn’t………
But I felt quite cheered! Rewarded for voting in spite of my wimpiness feeling a little punk 🙂

at my voting precinct, there was the dreaded (and should be illegal) PROVISIONAL BALLOT book sitting only on the Democrat table, naturally…Republicans usually vote LEGALLY. I found that kind of funny…
I said to nobody in particular, and loudly enough, “there’s that provisional book…You know they never open that after the voting to make sure people don’t double vote?”
Nobody even looked UP. Not even out of curiosity, which in itself was a curiosity to ME. Or not.

Always suspected they don’t bother with absentees if the main issues aren’t close. But had to this time. Provisionals sound dicey – mr. B run into some doozies as an election official. Nice story tho. Sorry- road is bumpy. I’m on I5 by the stockyards.

Baysider, you must have missed my posts on provisional ballots…absentee votes are sacrosancte (not) compared to provisional. Our mutual friend Wendy has worked downtown where all the prov. ballot books come in…as she told me when I asked about them ‘you think someone stands up in the middle of the huge crowd of workers and ballots and everybody checks every voter of their precinct when they hear “did JANE SMITH vote anywhere else?l….or Doug Jones….or Mildred Harrison..etc etc” It’s a complete sham.
SO perfect that the book was ONLY on the Democrat table at my precinct!
I’ve seen people come in and say “gee, I live too far from here to get home to vote but I work next door, can I vote here instead?” “Sure, just sign the provisional ballot book”……then, of course, why wouldn’t they go home and vote next door to their house if they’re into stuffing the ballot box?
Simple.

Yeah, firing him was totally wrong. If Time Warner was upset over his actions, a mild reprimand is sufficient. And I only say that there ‘may’ be more to the story than what is reported. Sometimes people do crappy or illegal things all under “I was being patriotic” but really they’re being control freaks or just plain weird. You know, just sayin’ …. 🙂 Hope the poor man gets justice.

If ‘they’ really wanted cleaner elections there would be a tech solution (linked to a govt issued IDcard) that scans into a computer. More than one ballot to an ID and they all get tossed. Simple. You package it up under ‘fairness’ and make everyone’s vote count’ by which you mean my vote counts when you only get one. and yes, mr b is driving. 3 hrs to go. (We had a raccoon to dispatch this morning, and cat sitter has to practice medicating kitty. She’s the ONLY other person who can get hands on kitty. Vet gave up and sent her home. Had to drive back to LA last night to get her.😞)

Ya, in Germany, the ID card is used…one swipe and NOBODY can vote with that card again..we’re not serious about it because our O-so-Libertarian brethren can’t STAND the idea of an ID card! that drives me CRAZY.

@kid: yes to morons for no ID, but I love the electoral college. Fortunately it’s too hard to defend on my iPhone (although we are dead stopped; I-5 is CLOSED for several miles ahead – oy! We’ll never get there.😠)

Baysider, I’m no political expert but I think I hate the electoral college, or at least its rules of engagement. Simple example being that entire states like California have all the electoral votes go to the democrats because they get 50.000000001% democrat vote statewide. I abhor that. I want each electoral vote in California to go to the winner in thieir specific district. If this were true, democrats would never win another federal election. Yes, I see where this presents another problerm, but I’d rather deal with that one.

Kid, that’s a reasonable position. What the EC does is make it a little harder for big states to overrun little ones. State gets an elector for each senator and congressman. So that gives representation by number of people as well as by state interest (as senators were once elected by states to represent their interests). Made it harder for PA and NY, eg, to run roughshod over Rhode Island or Vermont. Otherwise, presidential candidates would only campaign in about 10 states. Not perfect, but far better than straight popular vote nationally. It’s a subtlety the left happily overlooks, and lefty teachers choose to ignore.

Yeah, Baysider, but that also means one vote in Vermont or Rhode Island is equal to 20 votes (or something) in N.Y. That ain’t fair, either, is it? No. I believe each vote should count regardless of where you live. If you chose to live in a lightly populated state, that’s your choice.

Mal pls remember that states have interests too. The EC is a subtle balancing act. I’m a big fan. And I never want to see something like a national by popular vote that runs over minority rights always. The EC puts speed bumps in the way.

Baysider, Good point about minority rights being run over. Yet, I can accept that problem in the face of denying the majority. If I move to England and vote in contrast to what Englanders want, then Too dang bad. I’m in the minority and don’t even expect to be serviced by political decisions.
I still would like to see each congress person voting the majority of his/her/it district. Hey, We in Milford Oh, put you Mr Harrumph into power so you would cast our vote as our district majority decided. Yea, that’s what I want.
If it’s not majority rules then what is it? An unbelievably small number of Electoral College participants decide? Maybe I’m missing something.
