We need a LAUGH.    Slay us!  COME ON…think of a joke you love and type it up for us!

OR:  Are you reading a book you recommend?

OR:  Have you listened to some great music you can recommend to us?

OR:  Have you cooked a great dish recently?  Tell us how!

Thanks!

Ahh, Satiddy. Sittin here thinkin ‘bout what’s funny about the country today and realized that we’ve begun taking the late-nite comedians seriously and consider politicians a big joke.

Then I went on to the idea of reading. First book that came to my mind was Will Cuppy’s The Decline And Fall of Practically Everybody. Nice little collection of droll asides on several prominent figures from history. Hard to find, tho, so if you wanna read it it’ll prob’ly hafta be on-line.

As for cookin, I’m a fairly good hand in the kitchen . . . maybe a bit heavy on the garlic and onion . . . and usedta make great pot roasts, grilled gospel bird, chili mac, and other stuff when my kids were little. When I wasn’t at sea, I liked to make big ol’ Murkan breakfasts for the fam on weekends – pancakes, aigs, bacon, red-eye gravy, grits . . . the whole schmeer. But I married a gal who turned herself into a guh-RATE cook, so I don’t do mucha that no mo.

Weekends . . . yeah – ‘course it makes little diff what day of the week it is when you’re retired, but Satiddys and Sundays are good here on the Gulf Coast.

Always liked bein up and about in the early mornin, ‘specially in summertime ‘cause the heat ‘n’ humidity ain’t up too high yet. Enjoy watchin the sun come up over the oaks ‘n’ pines ‘n’ kudzu and bein able to ride my bike while ever’body’s still home sleepin or eatin and not out drivin around while textin. Watch in awe as thunderclangers form majestically on the horizon, tryin to decide if they’re gonna come rinse the place off or not.

Cool air, gentle breeze, breakin dawn, light traffic . . . yeah, that’s the time to be out, before the sun gets high and beats down like a searing weight on your shoulders and the mugginess mixed with exhaust fumes gets in your lungs like a rotten Katzenjammer kid who just discovered coarse-grit sandpaper.

And the smells . . . aromas, actually . . . prob’ly the best term I can lay on ‘em is common scents. Like ridin past the Mexican restaurant where somebody’s in there doin up the day’s first big ol’ pot of beans. Somethin wholesome ‘bout beans bein simmered by somebody who knows what he’s doin . . . teasing, pleasant, reassuring.

Of course there’s the sickly-sweet pungent smell of diesel fumes as the city bus goes by, but all ya gotta do is get upwind of it and clear your nostrils. Fortunately none of the trash trucks run on Saturday to stink up the place with their putrid fumes of stale, decaying waste and engines that average 3 miles per gallon.

Somebody doin laundry . . . hint of scented soap mixed with that flowery goo women put in towels and things to prevent them from absorbing water as they’re designed to do. But that stuff helps relieve the olfactory of the assault by the diesel fumes, so it’s o.k. as long as I don’t have to use those useless towels.

Natcherly somebody’s cookin bacon. Ever’ mornin I smell it. Sausage, too, and ham . . . and pancakes. Coffee, of course. Good additions to the early-mornin ambience. Bummer, tho, ‘cause all I can do is remember what it was like, since I can’t eat that stuff any more. Still pleasant, tho.

Pleasanter still is the girl walkin from her car toward the Tom Thumb (like a 7-11), maybe 30-ish with her little vest over her tanktop to identify her as the counter clerk and that marvelous smell of freshly-showered young woman mixed with that lingering tasty aroma of body splash and shampoo. Hooo-Ah!

Then by Burger King . . . and why in the world is somebody flame-broilin burgers at 0530!! Great smell, tho . . . atavistic, primitive, macho, and somehow sexy. And finally back to the house where some guy down the street is runnin his mower, spreadin that homey smell of fresh-cut grass to mix with the honeysuckle.

Yeah, common scents. Sometimes ya just gotta stop and pat a dog on the head, and smell the jasmine, and be thankful you ain’t so damned old yet that your smeller don’t smell so good no more.

I read everything written by Agatha Christie. My current read is “The Unexpected Guest” which was originally a play, I believe.
This morning we are preparing for a one hour ride to Folkston, GA, and it’s drizzling but that’s OK. Rain is no bother. Severe heat is! Anyway, our weekend is gonna be busy. This week was Biketoberfest in Daytona Beach, Florida. Yesterday we met with part of the FAITH Riders group, loaded up the trailer with signs, tables, chairs, the banner, etc. I went home, then Hubby and the guys took that down to the Folkston Flash Foods for today and Sunday. That’s our ministry which is to witness to bikers. This weekend they should returning from Daytona after the Biketoberfest is over. They’re invited to stop for coffee, donuts and to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ. Please pray that we will meet those that need to hear The Word that they may be saved. God is our only hope for a better country. Thanks! Luv to you and yours. 🙂

  4. I will confess to reading an online webcomic, Girl Genius.
I started reading it from the beginning again and am realizing how much I missed the first pass through.
It is nine degrees above freezing here. I will probably put the boat (which I never finished restoring, or put in the water this year) under cover.
Pick up the many tree limbs in the yard and mow it.
Take Scherie to breakfast and to the grocery store, and the dog to the vets,
Listen to the various talk radio shows I often call in to or sometimes co-host.
Hope nothing comes up at work that requires my attention.
Have a great day guys and gals.

No Jokes, but EVEN BETTER COMMENTS…THANK YOU….It was mesmerizing, all of them were, and got me out of politics for a few minutes! I’m off to a retreat today so that’ll be a blessing , too.

Will comment more much later today.

SPARKY: Do you know of BACA: Bikers Against Child Abuse? A Harley friend of mine in AZ belongs and it’s a fabulous thing. They surround children with a fear of walking from school to home, for example, if a father has been banned from his kids and keeps coming around…the bikers accompany the kid… If a child is scared of sleeping at his house because there’s a threat from the non-custodial parent, or whatever, a violent crime might have happened there which scared the kids, etc., BACA drivers spend the WHOLE NIGHT circling the house…..the kids feel SAFE. What a FABULOUS group of bikers.

    See ya’ll later! xxx

When we got up this morning it was 73 degrees. By the time we ate breakfast and took our daily 2 mile walk, it was in the high 70’s. No sweat, because we enjoy single digit humidity most of the time. Palm tree lined streets, blue skies and clean air with mountain backdrop.
Very small-townish where we are, with light traffic and no congestion. Snow birds will be arriving soon from places like Wisconsin and Toronto, Canada. By winter, we will drop to the 30;s and 50’s due to Vegas being a high desert (2,000+ feet). We are withing an hour of the Mount Charleston ski lift or Lake Mead for boating and fishing. We might get a dusting of snow on occasion which is always fun because we don’t have to shovel it (been there, done that, got the video!).
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND, Y’ALL, AND PRAY FOR AN UPSET COME NOVEMBER!

Mal, sounds SO nice! L.A. is INCREDIBLY beautiful lately, too. And I got to go to a retreat in the Palisades in a very old home that was moved to the lovely setting it sits in now…FABULOUS day with great friends, super talk, music, etc. Of course, I was singing harmony, so you KNOW it was fabulous music (smile!!!)
I wish we would drop into the 30’s…I’m pretty sure I barely wore a coat last winter and I’m a cold weather girl.
You have a great weekend, too!

FOOD: Slow Cooker Kalua Pork. It’s ridiculously easy and beyond delicious fall weather dish. Rub a 5 lb. pork butt roast with a T. of sea salt. (I generally use a collar roast and cut it in half to fit my crock pot.) Line the bottom of crock pot with 3 strips of bacon. Put roast on bacon fat side up. Cook on low 14-16 hours. Spoon out some juices to cook squash and onions on the side.

Where did I get this gem? In the COSTCO MAGAZINE! Although I have a friend who grew up in Maui, and they kept a covered pit in their front yard for making traditional kalua pork – whole pig – and she said don’t change a thing.

Mal…English blood? (and we’re not sure..my mom has very light blue eyes, so I like to joke that Richard the Lionhearted added to our family during the Crusades):)

I just heard Richard Miniter on FOX…he’s a fabulous investigative reporter that Mr. Z and I had the pleasure of talking to for a long time at a Friends of Abe event….
I believe it was Columbia that he’s investigated the Clinton Foundation only to find horrible corruption, disappointed staffers there, a MESS……everything BUT what the foundation says they’ve done there.. ALL LIES
