Polls/statistics……….rigged?

So, there’s THIS……..and there’s THIS

Most people think that these facts don’t jive, don’t belong together..“Z, why’d you publish these together as if there’s some connection?”

I think there IS some connection;  I think the Trump numbers are rubbish.   Do YOU see my point?

  1. I’m of the opinion that reputable polling firms [if that’s who you’re referring to] aren’t going to skew their numbers, because there’s no financial viability in them picking a side. These firms essentially rely on strife [like most of the media] and their credibility. Almost every public polling organization makes their survey samples, methodologies and weighting available to the public; this is where one would be able to determine if a poll was skewed. And sometimes it can certainly be skewed, for a variety of factors…..but its also always important to remember that a poll is a specific snapshot in time.

The Starbucks article is not surprising, since surveys and social media have illustrated that an apparently large number of people believe that Starbucks was hiring refugees here in the U.S., which is not the case.

It would appear that the Quinnipiac poll was primarily surveying people’s opinions regarding Trump personally, while the Politico poll was geared towards overall direction of the country since the election. The results makes sense to me, since I would answer one with my disappointment in Trump the person, while stating that the nation was headed in a better direction [generally] since the election.

I don’t think Trump does himself any favors stating explicitly that negative polls are….”fake news”.

Statistics. Argh! Statistics show that virtually everyone who drinks milk will die.

Someone once said that politicians and comedians use statistics the same way that drunks use lampposts — more for support than for illumination. ‘Tis true ’tis pity, and pity ’tis ’tis true. Statistics just don’t feed the watchdog, only the scavengers who raid the trashcans in the middle of the night.

Facts are reliable when they’re all presented honestly. Statistics in the hands of an editor can be as slippery as the memory of that crazy old uncle every family has at least one of: the older he gets, the better he used to be.

Frankly, I doubt seriously if we EVER get the whole truth about ANYthing from D.C. And I KNOW we don’t get it from the alphabet networks. I trust ABCNNBCBS about as far as I could punt Michael Moore.

  3. geeez2014 says:

Starbucks losing some business for embracing refugees…Trump, who’s trying to do something about the refugee problem’s polls are down? 🙂

Talk about ‘slippery’, Bocopro…..I just watched a story about the WH and the FBI about a confirmed incorrect news story at the NYTimes……FOX gave the facts. CNN gave the facts pretty close to FOX but the banner beneath the journalist read as really accusatory. Something like WHITE TRIES TO BLOCK FBI STORY. When both stations say all Priebus said to the FBI “But the story is false, so what can we do?”

The WH says even Comey agreed the NY Times story was untrue.

The Times article includes their inimitable “The official was not authorized to disclose the matter publicly and insisted on anonymity.”

The White House is made guilty by the WH but “The FBI would not say whether it had contacted the White House about the veracity of the Times report. The official told the AP that Priebus’ request came after the FBI told the White House it believed a New York Times report last week describing those contacts was not accurate.”

FOX’s internet article includes “The White House confirmed Thursday night that the conversation between Priebus and FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe occurred on Feb. 15, but said it was McCabe who initiated the contact to inform Priebus that a New York Times report was overstating the nature of their investigation, Politico reported.”

No talk about the NY Times possibly getting it wrong? 🙂

    Fascinating stuff.

  4. @Z,
“I think the Trump numbers are rubbish.”
Why not; the polling pundits produced nothing but “rubbish” prior to Trump assuming office! Is there any reason to take them seriously now?

  5. I talk to many businessmen and salespeople plus people at the diner.
The only people I see opposed to Trump are on the TV or CI and a friend of mine (conservative) like CI . Or Ducky 🙂

  6. Mal says:

According to all the polls, Hillary was a shoe-in. Pay no attention to polls and instead watch Trump make us great again. His meetings with the chiefs of all the major U.S. corporations was unprecedented and most came away encouraged he will be successful turning our economy around. Enjoy the ride, folks, while the left continues down the path of self destruction.

  7. geeez2014 says:

JMB; I don’t think all pollsters are rubbish but I think a lot are dishonest.

Ed, you’re lucky you don’t live HERE….you’d be lucky to find a Con in Santa Monica…although they do exist. Elsewhere in California, you’d find plenty.
    Good observation, thanks..reassuring.
Just had breakfast with my cousins from Connecticut; I think i know the only 2 conservatives in that state! You should HEAR the huge property taxes they have, which go up every year, etc…
BUT, they did say that more restaurants are opening in Fairview, CT because the gov’t has given tax credits for new businesses opening there…
}GUESS WHAT! IT WORKS!! But even the awfully entrenched libs in that town do NOT UNDERSTAND THIS.

Mal….that’s the point, isn’t it…..PEOPLE WANT LESS REFUGEES, SO DOES TRUMP, BUT POLLS SHOW HE”S DOWN? 🙂

  8. Kid says:

I believe the Starbucks hot, I don’t believe Trump’s poll numbers are sinking like a rock. Based on the daily YouGov polls on my smart phone, Trump is clearly getting close to 50% support on related questions. Which would jive with the election mumbers.

I don’t believe anything the MSM says regarding this kind of stuff. They’ve declared total war on Trump and they wouldn’t publish something positive if (fill inthe blank)

  9. geeez2014 says:

    https://www.yahoo.com/gma/obamacare-favorability-nears-record-propelled-independents-poll-080551760–abc-news-topstories.html
WOW! Polls in the past, and hearsay, anecdotal stories were all PEOPLE DON’T WANT OBAMACAre…AND JUST WHEN Trump’s planning to do something better (hopefully), I just saw this poll saying PEOPLE LOVE IT! What a coincidence!~
Altho, maybe less coincidence but WHO THEY ASKED!? OH, WAIT! Here’s an interesting sentiment in the link 😉
“At the same time, 62 percent of those polled say that the country is headed down the wrong track when it comes to health care. On whether to repeal the Affordable Care Act, the poll is nearly split with 48 percent of respondents saying no and 47 percent saying yes.”
But the headline is “Obamacare favorability nears record propelled by independents: poll”
Gosh, that headline made ME think it was a lot more than 47%!!

    \

  10. Kid says:

Z, they simply make up the numbers, or their poll consists of a large number of dems. hilrod way ahead in the polls, obama 12th best pres, etc ad infinitum.

  11. Ed – That makes sense; most of my peers may support some of Trump’s cabinet picks or politics, but can’t stand Trump the man, or his theatrical antics.

  12. “JMB; I don’t think all pollsters are rubbish but I think a lot are dishonest.”
I don’t mean to imply that “all pollsters” are “rubbish” or “dishonest”. All I’m saying is that their entire work product, that I observed, prior to the General Election results proved to be erroneous. That said, I’m in agreement with your statement that ” the Trump numbers are rubbish” given the recent history of their inability to report accurate results.

  13. Kid says:

Just saw on the It Don’t Make Sense blog that the Rasmussen poll had him at 52% approval last week. I think this is a pretty respected poll in terms of accuracy.

  14. edbonderenka says:

Well, O’Keefe’s latest release shows that the CNN newsroom is willing to use old data to support it’s case.

  15. edbonderenka says:

CI: I don’t like his public persona either. But I love what he does.
If one begets the other, I could learn to like him 🙂

  16. geeez2014 says:

Kid, I’d heard that, too….no surprise, right?

    JMB: Agreed!

CI, meaning that Trump had better come through with his politics….he’s not winning on his charm, that’s for sure. Just had lunch with a Hillary voter who’s not extremely leftwing but leftwing enough. She doesn’t disagree with everything Trump does but, as I pointed out, for a Wharton grad, you’d think a man would have more adjectives than “Dude” “Catastrophe” “incredible,..” I believe he’s lost people because of his huge egomaniacal stuff, too “I’m the best golfer of all the rich people” didn’t make him her friend, that’s for sure. How could it? I honestly feel people might have been even more on board for him had he showed a modicum of dignity and humility.

And imagine his BARRING ANY news outlets from briefings? http://www.dallasnews.com/news/donald-trump-1/2017/02/24/trump-takes-fake-media-task-white-house-bars-cnn-ny-times-la-times-briefing
That can’t happen. What SHOULD Happen is , if CNN misquotes, then tape the briefing and say “See? Spicer said THIS and CNN says he said THAT”: We need FACTS.

Meanwhile, “A source says that Donald Trump is a horrible, horrible human being, let them say it to my face,” Trump told a large crowd. “Let there be no more sources.”
    What the H?

  17. geeez2014 says:

Ed, CNN’s outrage at this Russia/FBI story nearly had me laughing…..the way I heard FOX deliver the story and then heard their guy deliver the story directly after was amazing…..FOX said the facts, not white washing, but just saying “This happened…then that happened..” To their credit, I was surprised how close CNN came to doing that UNTIL they finished and took off on how Priebus “pressured” the FBI to get the NY Times to kill the story…which would be stupid since it was the FBI which CALLED Priebus to tell them “the NYT story is ‘BS'” and all he said was “what can I do about it?” That’s pressure?

  18. ….meaning that Trump had better come through with his politics…

Yes, but…you brought up a good point regarding the media being barred. You can’t have Spicer say in Dec or Jan, “We have a respect for the press when it comes to the government. That is something that you can’t ban an entity from. That’s what makes a democracy a democracy, versus a dictatorship.”…..and then proceed to do just that.

These sort of actions are part and parcel to what has kept most of my peers from being Trump supporters, myself included.

  19. geeez2014 says:

CI, these actions also make for the ridiculous “FASCIST” label the Leftwingers want to pin on Trump. While there’s barely anything more fascist than blocking free speech on campuses, which is something the Left is so good at, blocking media just gives HUGE ammunition by which to slam Trump; this kerfuffle is HIS fault. He can’t complain about their reaction, though I personally totally get it, particularly when I see stories so badly, or incorrectly represented by CNN and the loathing all (all) of their people show for him all day and evening long.

  20. Baysider says:

Do I believe the numbers? Figures lie, and liars figure. Ever hear of the marketing concept bandwagon? Of course. Cast doubt in supporters’ minds.

  21. Z – Exactly. The political and civics education in our school system has deteriorated so badly, that we have folks slinging the terms Fascist and Communist around……without having a clue that their target bears no resemblance to the actual tenets of the ideology.

If you want to either be saddened or entertained [depending on your mood] google the “movement” labeled “Bash the Fash”. Just another reason to carry

  22. Kid says:

CNN, I’m torn.. Do I bar them from the briefings or do I just order an air strike on jeff zucker.

There is enough evidence of some of these outlets being lying sacks, that they should have their credentials pulled imo. There is free press, and there is no holds barred, we will do anything to damage those we don’t like. Newyorkdailynews is totally bonkers for example, They should just have 100 articles a day that say WE HATE TRUMP !!! lol.

Ditto many others including CNN.They are the democrat propaganda machine.

Seriously. We are not in an environment of decorum where all get to claim they are operating as sane people in service to the news reading public.

GOES BOTH WAYS !!!!!!! If media outlets can ban positive news about Trump, Trump should ban them as being in disservice to the public.

Once again, None of these moron outfits know what else to do. They’ve been propping up democrats and hammering on non-democrats for decades. They simply Don’t Know What Else To Do.No Clue just as obama had no clue.

  23. Mal says:

C.I., what you say about why you don’t like Trump is true and understandable, but to not support him because of that, I’m sorry, I don’t agree. You can dislike a person’s character but still support the good job they’re doing, don’t you think? I mean, could we have asked for any better outcome than what he has had?

  24. Mal – There’s ‘supporting’ and there’s supporting. I’m not a Republican, Trump’s not ‘my guy’. So there’s absolutely no expectation for me to consider myself a Trump ‘supporter’. I can [and do] support some of his policies, and many of his Cabinet picks.

But I’ll not, ever…..NOT hold him accountable for his actions and his statements. Especially when they’re quite often the peak of blatant and immature hypocrisy. I don’t operate, ideologically, in a black and white, two-party paradigm.

Given that he’s carrying the flag of Conservatism [it pains me to say that], I hold him to a higher standard than I would hold any Leftist. I would hope ALL Conservatives would do likewise. But the game seems to take precedence over principles.

  25. geeez2014 says:

CI….you say “I would hope ALL Conservatives would do likewise. But the game seems to take precedence over principles.”
The ‘game’ is set in concrete right now….principles? They’d have got us Hillary if we hadn’t voted for him….NOBODY else on the Republican or Libertarian tickets would have beat Hillary but HIM, sadly.. Not voting for him was not a choice, not something to do with principles.

You play the deck your dealt and I can barely stand Trump but I will support him….hoping he’ll get a grip and start speaking with some amount of dignity and civility, and stop giving the leftwing media such incredible ammo like blocking them from a PRESS briefing!?

I wonder sometimes at Ivanka, Jerod Kushner, his sons, etc….he says frequently that they try to reign him in…..I keep wishing that would WORK.

  26. geeez2014 says:

    http://money.cnn.com/2016/12/22/news/companies/trump-foreign-workers/index.html

WHAT THE HECK? A friend told me about this today; I hadn’t heard about it, or didn’t pay much attention. What are they THINKING?

With Trump, it seems to be “PRESS! BE NICE TO ME…OKAY, YES, I’M GIVING YOU ALL KINDS OF AMMUNITION TO POINT OUT THINGS WHICH ARE HIGHLY HYPOCRITICAL OR FALSE, BUT I BLAME YOU!”

    ??

  27. Kid says:

fwiw, I don’t focus on Trump the person at all. I am only looking at the activities and actions.
Perfection is impossible. He’s a New Yorker. That’s how they talk.

8 years from now, we can analyze what Trump with a R congress was able to do (vs reagan with a dem congress) and we’ll will have to say Trump has done more for America and Americans than Reagan did – if we are honest in our evaluation. Yea, I know I’m hanging it out, but Trump continues to promise to keep the campaign promises. If he stumbles he will end up being labeled worse than the POS obama. He’s not going to let that happen. Not gonna happen.

I consider myself very good at analyzing human relations and people as well. If I have to eat crow 4 years form now, I’m hoping CI will send me some Worchestershire sauce.

America does control the world order. Except for the last 8 years at least – maybe 16 or even 28. It is time we did that again. It is time to let other countries know that we’re not going to get in their way, but we’re not going to bow to them, apologize to them, and if they do proceed to mess with us, there will be consequences.

Where we have devolved to in the world, generally speaking (EU submitting to the moslems, the left given an inch a day for 8 years and totally out of control) is going to create many ugly situations. Dimploamcy isn’t going to be a bunch of people in 3 piece suits lying to each other, it’s going to get ugly. It needs to get ugly. The Left has taken us here, Not Trump. Trump has the job to lead us out of this nightmare.

I’m sitting back in my easy chair and watching the world -and America- take a new shape with a smile on my face.

    The alternative was death. D E A T H. End of America.

  28. geeez2014 says:

Kid, I have a really good sixth sense about people and there are times I trust Trump to get things done; I’ve even thought his clumsy words are a ruse!, then he says something that allows the leftwing media to dishearten Americans with stories that make him look hideous, and that he doesn’t get that and that’s worrisome.
What’s with his SON’s vineyard looking for foreign employees, for example? Are they completely tone deaf? My fairly lib lunch partner today mentioned it; she knew THAT, she’d heard THAT, and it made a very bad impression on her, if she needed anything more to NOT like Trump over. There I sat thinking “That just can’t be…” But it is. man

  29. SORRY TO BE LATE TO THE PARTY.
    @KId,
“the Rasmussen poll had him at 52% approval last week. I think this is a pretty respected poll in terms of accuracy.”
I agree that the Rasmussen reports are, typically, way above average, usually. Do you remember where [he] had Trump prior to the Primary and/or General Election(s)? I don’t but I would appreciate it if you could enlighten me.

    Thanks,

    JMB

  30. Baysider says:

Re: your link to Cuomo. The inmates HAVE taken over the asylum. No wonder they don’t understand the vote for Trump.

  31. Kid says:

    @JMB,, Rasmussen. No sir I don’t.

  32. Kid says:

Z, Trust in the fact that the left will always find an avenue to attack 🙂
