I watched about 30 minutes of the Washington Correspondents Dinner Saturday night. I have always enjoyed it and, this time, it was dull as dirt. As you all know, no president came (not sure if another president other than Trump had stood them up if they’d shown), so no celebrities were there, just news people. Part of the fun, in the past, of the televised proceedings, was seeing the celebs and seeing what female newscasters were wearing, who I could see talking to whom, etc., I have to admit! Fun to see them ‘gussied up’! Not this time. There was no ‘red carpet coverage’ going into the dinner and the whole dinner looked like a business meeting.
The speakers were duller than usual, too. Woodward and Bernstein. Here’s why I mention this:
THEIR HYPOCRISY WAS REVOLTING.
That’s it…revolting. Because they hammered, in each of their individual, dead boring, speeches, on FREEDOM OF THE PRESS and how THE PRESS’ CURIOSITY and COVERAGE OF IMPORTANT ISSUES SHOULD NOT BE SQUELCHED.
I was sitting there saying “What about the IRS, Lois Lerner situation? You covered THAT in depth?” “What about the fact that Obama got the Nobel Prize? Anybody ask what THAT was about with any seriousness?” “Did you ever hammer Obama about NOT fulfilling his promise to close Gitmo in 8 years like you’ve hammered Trump for not doing all he said he’d do in the first 100 days?” “How about the Michelle Obama school food fiasco? Anybody but the Conservative media cover the trash cans all over American schools loaded with the broccoli and carrot sticks she recommended but the kids wouldn’t eat?” “How about how you handle Chelsea versus how you handle Ivanka?” “How about the new interviews asking Dan Rather about journalistic integrity after all HE did for integrity!!? WHAT?”
I could (We could) ALL go on and on and ON and on and ON………..
And these liberal writers have the GALL to say TRUMP IS HOLDING BACK A FREE PRESS?
“THE MEDIA IS NOT FAKE,” pouted both Bernstein and Woodward. That’s what the media’s saying yesterday about THE MESSAGE THEY HAD FOR TRUMP.
No, it might not be FAKE but it is a HUGE LIE, A PARTNER IN OBFUSCATION, A CARRIER OF MISINFORMATION, MISCHARACTERIZATION AND THE WORST BIAS AND LEAST RESPECTFUL TO ANY SITTING PRESIDENT EVER.
Can you tell I WAS SO TICKED OFF? I’m VERY glad I watched because it was nice to hear the lukewarm reception the fat old reporters of yesteryear deserved.
The Correspondents Dinner was a DEAD BORE for the first time in the probably 30 years I’ve watched it.
HURRAH. Oh, I won’t go into the ‘comedian’s’ act….it was too low to bother with here. I will leave you with this, however : At the end of the night, he said, “Only in America can a first-generation Indian Muslim kid get on this stage and make fun of the president.”
Ya, that’s a big problem….In America, we used to do it with humor AND class and dignity for the position. Maybe you don’t do that in India.

You might be happy to know that MSNBC Live anchor Thomas Roberts and his husband Patrick Abner were there.

My opinion, FWIW, is that very few “correspondents” today comprehend what they’re there for. They want to be reporter, researcher, analyst, commentator, entertainer, and VIP all in one, and most of ‘em are unequipped for that job.
Many of them started out with the noblest of intentions – to INFORM people, not guide or persuade or propagandize or confuse them. But in the backs of their minds, most of them nurtured some romantic life of charging fearlessly into hot firefights in international hotspots, ducking sniper fire and mortar bursts, digging out the human interest stories of battle-hardened heroes fighting for edited truth, liberal justice, and the armchair America way.
The guys, of course, went a step further, visualizing themselves in dark grottos in mysterious faraway places, dealing with multiple languages spoken by bearded men and dangerous women, infiltrating terrorist camps and bandit strongholds to get the scoop on rival networks and boxtops for that prized Pulitzer.
Many of them wound up being nothing more than nuisances to the embassies or the deployed forces or the government offices they were dispatched to report on. They developed attitudes and personas they believed would open doors and prime-time TV slots for them and their personalized edition of what they thought they saw while on assignment.
In other words, instead of information and enlightenment, they provided the particular flavor of indoctrination and pronouncement their editors decided was best for their audiences and the sponsors.
FDR, IKE, and even JFK didn’t have to worry too much about having what they said truncated or edited or modified or taken out of context so far that the original meaning was lost. In today’s “Gotcha!” journalism, tho, DJT could produce a cure for cancer and the media would pillory him for putting thousands of oncologists out of work.
Sometimes if I know a breaking news story will be repeated several times during the day, I’ll watch the raw video with the sound off. Quite often when I later hear the accompanying “report,” I find that my initial perspective was shallow and naïve, that I need to have things explained in detail for me because I’m slow and ignorant.
That tends to stick in my craw. If you want to hear news without innuendo or snark or condescension, watch OAN. Of all the correspondents I’ve seen in the past decade or so, Catherine Herridge is by far the most professional and credible.
As for rubber-chicken dinners with the cameras rolling, I know a guy with some swamp land he’d like to sell you.

bocopro, actually, the dinner was more geared to what the goal of that group’s been in the past, without the celebs, etc. More professional. BUT, DULL. There’s always been humor, and this humor was just vicious, not funny….and I don’t say that because it was against Trump….it was pretty vicious against Bush, too. Obama had jokes lobbed at him but he never really set himself up for being laughed at. Trump doesn’t want to do that, either, but when a guy is having a meeting on China and suddenly, in mid-sentence, says “Hey, I have electoral maps of why I WON”, you’re going to get slammed. And probably deserve the laughs.
I agree about Catherine Herridge…she’s SO professional and credible and works hard for the story.
Kid…so well said. Thanks. You’re right. It was SO CLEAR the event was DULL…and the people in the audience looked so bored. I felt for the FOX table because the comedian was brutal and so insulting to them.
FJ…is it that day AGAIN? Thanks for the reminder.
And the really good poem….fabulously pertinent today.

AOW, we all knew those adjectives of yours applied, but to hear the HYPOCRISY, as I listed in my post, the things they HAVE NOT COVERED in the depth they’d cover IF it was a Republican doing any of those things, blew my MIND.
That self-importance and ego ….is BLINDING!~!!!
Oh my GOSH! Howie Kurtz just called it ‘lackluster,’ the EXACT word I used as I watched….LACKLUSTER!

Every now and then I google “what’s the net worth of so and so”? And I find that the least paid contributors of FNC are the best, most direct, earnest and honest as well as unconcerned with mass or sex appeal. Like Kurtz or James Rosen.
So why are some of these people paid millions like Madcow when they have 25 rabid dedicated viewers? Or get a 2 share each evening when a Fox program gets a 90 share or something huge compared to that roach infested crew at messyNBC?
Greg Gutfield is worth one million and Kimberly Guifoyle makes $850K. I prefer the latter two cause of their intensity and honesty. Where I’ve always felt that O’ Really was always a blovistibg arrogant rude bombastic bore and a putz!
Why wife has a degree in journalism and I remember in her early days she and her crew were filled with a consuming need and drive for honesty integrity and digging out the truth.
What’s happened that we don’t have those attributes in our journalists and news outlets any more? Why did the worm turn and who led the downward spiral?

Imp, believe me…many of you can’t stand O’Reilly, I was no big fan, either, but he DID PUT FOX ON THE MAP; there can be no denying that. After Glenn Beck, who I can’t STAND these days and I’m so grateful he left…O’Reilly was THE IT MAN. We can’t write him off now……..no way.
I found fascinating the salaries and your comments about them and couldn’t agree more. Look how hard Catherine Herridge and that other one who had breast cancer and now has really short hair work…they ROCK and they’re ALWAYS on the big stories and get it RIGHT. Can’t remember the second one’s name and don’t have time to Google right now.
Imp, I can’t listen to Judith Miller because she always goes liberal and acts like the Pulitzer puts her above the rest. I don’t think she’s a bad journalist, and she’s not ALWAYS so biased, but usually.
JMB and Adrienne…if you don’t consider watching a bunch of liberals BORED WITLESS and not clapping as they usually, do, etc., “nothing to miss,” than you missed nothing. I loved the little I watched because it made me happy they were all practically yawning…
That’s usually a GORGEOUS GALA night;…on a scale of 1-10 it’s a 9….Sat. night was a 3.
Bartiromo’s bounce last year was embarrassing!! But, at least she doesn’t dress that low cut on the news like Kimberly G does. And Jeanine, too..which, after 60, is not the best look.
I can barely listen to her OR Judge Jeanine anymore….with the judge, I feel like if it wasn’t TV, she’d be spitting all over me from the way she tawks…Not the accent so much (“w” intended) but her delivery. ugh
Kid…I’m so glad I watched as the media had their heads in their hands as the yawned their way through the speakers Sat. night!
But the HYPOCRISY..as if the media’s unbiased and REALLY looking into stories? Hilarious

Kim Jeong Eun
Ackshully, English doesn’t have the proper sound for the Kim part of it. The “K” is done by most native Koreans a bit like a hybrid of the letters “k” and “g,” which would make the name come out something like “Gheem” because the “i” is expressed as a very slightly softened hard “e.” And just to clarify, that’s his “last” or family name.
The Jeong part is like a cross between our “uh” and “aw” sounds, another sound we don’t naturally make any more than we do the French “r” or German “u” mit umlaut. But “Jawng” is probably close enough.
The “u” in Eun isn’t a soft “u” as in “fun” or the hard “u” in “flu.” It’s more like the double “oo” in “look.” Both “Oon” and “Uhn” miss the mark.
At least that’s what I heard. I’ve even heard Koreans pronounce it Kim (as in “him”) and Un (as in “fun”).
I’m just a hopeless pedant.
