Ex-student of mine e-mailed me some time back saying he was applying for a job teaching world history at a fairly prestigious university (which I won’t name). While in my dual-enrollment class, he frequently asked me questions which had very little to do with our classroom topics. Often they were related to politics or the military. He always listened intently and asked followups which indicated he had a pretty good grip on things for an 18-yr-old. He’s 30 now, with his MA from Columbia, and I think he wants to get my take on things so he can heavily “borrow” my insights and style.
He asked for my capsule opinion of nearly every country on the planet.
Here are some of my distilled comments:
France – completely self-deluded. Lost in a downward spiral of wholly unjustifiable narcissism.
Germany – doomed by a genetic imperative of joyless bad judgment. Given either opportunity or crisis, can be depended upon to choose disastrously.
Russia – hopelessly paranoid. Locked in eternal combat with its alter ego du jour.
Britain – entirely too British. Totally spent after Dunkirk and slipping deeper and deeper into psychosis triggered by excessive belief in its own literature.
Spain – dazed by spectacular loss of uncountable wealth and power. Waiting for discovery of a new continent so that it can relive the glory of yesteryear.
Italy – thoroughly confused. Plurality run amok amidst the wreckage of the Roman Empire.
Greece – steadfastly unaware. Final decision made by Greek federation 2200 years ago was to sit in the sun, eat fish, and be neither Asian nor European.
Canada – rudderless and without goals. Spends virtually all its time trying to convince everyone, especially itself, that it is not a US satellite.
United States – self-indulgent champion. Has nearly used up all the magic in the lamp and is rushing madly to follow the examples of Italy and Britain.
Israel – colossal British blunder. Roughly 10 million Jews sitting on real estate that 100 million Arabs want to eradicate them from.
Arabia – gauche nouveau riche. The mid-Eastern equivalent of a redneck powerball winner.
Africa – poorly led, poorly fed, and nearly dead. The womb of the human race and the place that charity goes to perish ignominiously.
South America – a collection of genetic and cultural mishaps. A parasitic region governed by fraud, waste, and abuse.
India – up to its armpits in Indians. A completely alien mindset which has settled for daily hand-to-mouth existence.
China – a waking juggernaut. The classic paradigm of a culture which peaks, declines, wallows, and rises again. Watch out.
Japan – the Britain of Asia. Has done virtually everything England has done over a millennium, but in one-tenth the time, including slip into obscurity.
Indonesia – a confused China. Still sorting out its game plan. Possibly the next regional superpower. First step, annex the Philippines.
Indochina – a worn out battleground. Roughly 100 million people without a single clue.
Australia – good bloke. Damned good bloke. The America of 50 years ago. Too bad it’s so insignificant.
Scandinavia – purposeless and futureless. Britain with a great standard of living and no one in charge or anything much to do.

Now I’m hearing the experts are wondering if the ballpark shootings were premeditated. My response it “No, I think this guy just felt like taking a walk at 6:30 in the morning with guns and ammunition and suddenly just had to shoot!” OMG

Am hearing a preview of what Trump’s going to say about Cuba today…He’s going to toughen laws again to where Cuban military profits more than Cuban people do. It is NOT shutting down all travel, all trade, etc., but I’m very eager to hear how the mainstream lib media mischaracterizes it….it’ll be PLENTY, watch for it.
Cubans are celebrating in Florida…Rubio’s worked for this.. I follow the sentiment of the Cuban people, how pleased THEY are, not how pleased the Cuban government/military is!

Wanted to mention how a politician on TV last night suggested what I’ve talked about here: We can’t make a LAW for this, but I would highly recommend all politicians’ families must move TO D.C., with kids and all, after election.
In days gone by, families knew each other, kids went to school together, women met for charity events, dads met at soccer games…Republicans AND Democrats. They got to know each other OUT of the realm of politics; THIS helped in the old days.
I also believe smoke filled rooms where Bourbon or Vodka are prevalent are highly under rated. 🙂

A little levity:
When the gambler wakes up from dreaming about a huge glowing number 5 made of gold and diamonds, he knows it’s an omen. He grabs a racing form and looks up that day’s fifth race. Sure enough, the number 5 horse in the fifth race is Fifth Element. So for the rest of the day he does everything in fives: He eats five bowls of cereal for breakfast, goes for a five-mile run, takes a five minute shower, and wears the fifth jacket he finds in his closet.
At the racetrack, he buys five programs, bets $555 on the fifth horse in the fifth race, and sits in the fifth seat of the fifth row of the bleachers in section five.
And when the gun goes off, he settles in and watches his horse come in fifth!!!

Bocopro. Would love to see the WHOLE list. This in particular caught my eye: Spain – dazed by spectacular loss of uncountable wealth and power. Yes, Spain was once THE BOMB. They had it ‘all’ but not the old fashioned way. They didn’t earn it and consequently fell into disrepair when the silver/gold from the new world ran out.
Still, in the late 1500’s they stood as a bulwark against the Ottomans.
Notes from Roger Crowley’s excellent book, Empires of the Sea:
* Only Spain, with a centralized bureaucracy could muster the money and power to meet the Ottoman challenge.
* War to the Ottomans was an unceasing imperial project. It took the Christian west 150 years to recognize this, [what happened to that realization??] after much parley, exchange and attempt to come to a mutual accord. They were long surprised by the relentless Ottoman military machine, and that they would be the target. [Not much has changed, eh?]
* In the end, Spain’s silver from the new world brought an inflation and modernity that the Ottomans couldn’t match. In 1566 the only gold mint in the realm devalued it’s money 30%. The Spanish Real appreciated greatly, and the Ottomans couldn’t strike money of matching value. The silver coins got thinner. Prices rose. Shortages, and manufacturing eroded. Raw materials and Bullion “sucked out of empire by Christian Europe’s higher prices and lower production costs.”
Then, of course, Spain was eclipsed by Protestant seaman in stout boats from London and Amsterdam, financed by an entrepreneurial middle class, earning their way to wealth.

Spain isn’t anywhere I’m that interested in, not comparatively…but I will say Bocopro’s other things are terrific, except the French do deserve to be narcissistic 🙂
Germans CAN have a kind of joyless bad judgment….
There are SO many German liberals who WANT to be beaten for the NAZI years as if they did it….it’s amusing to watch them beat themselves up for the horrible sins of their fathers…or not; as we know, not all Germans were NAZIS.

JMB, a couple of years ago my grandson, who is studying for his doctorate in psychology, said he had a few bucks and wanted to take a chance on the market and asked me what to buy, so I told him Tesla, which was running between $90-100. He watched it for a short time while it climbed to $140 before investing. I tried getting in when it was an IPO but couldn’t. It was blocked and only sold to big investors through selective brokers.

Kid, some analysts are predicting 1,000 for Tesla. Its also been stated its waaaay over sold when its valued higher than Ford, which is over 100 years old and much more established. My grandson sold a few weeks ago at around $208 fearing a pullback. We definitely are ripe for a pullback. (Personally, I don’t have any stock, only real estate).

Z, the market has been going straight up since 2009, though more sideways with an upward bent the last year. No one knows what the market will do, but it sure does not often give the participants what they want either which is a pullback.
MAL, I don’t have any stock either. Just mutual fund via 401k.

Z, j. Kerry decided he was going to run for president the moment he realized his initials were JFK.
JFK was the skipper of a PT boat PT109, which was cut in half by a Japanese cruiser. The crew swam to an island and JFK swam back out into the channel with a light that he hoped would bring a rescue boat. The story get fuzzzy for me from there. Did the light save them or did a note written on a coconut and passed to alloed forces. Anyway……
j kerry decided to join the Navy during the Vietnam war and got a detail on a ‘Swift Boat’, becuase he believed those crews would never be sent to Vietnam. To his woe, they were so time for plan B for ole j kerry. He knew that 3 Purple Heart awards would send him home. In short order he received 3 wounds, only one of which even required a bandaid and demanded a Purple Heart for each one. Voila, back home, writing books about he being involved in things he was never involved in (lying like a rug) and worming his way into politics. The worm lost, and will never be back.

(I can’t remember the term…) They’re basically saying the guys who said ‘That did NOT HAPPEN like that and he doesn’t deserve to tell the story he’s telling of his bravery” were lying and I thought they’d been shown to be right?

No doubt, there are many spittle mouthed drooling leftie morons who believe kerry’s version of events over the ‘swift boaters’ true testimony of the events.
