I’m reminded of that old time tune, who I now can’t remember said….”Happiness …. is a warm gunnnnm”!!!!
Happiness? So many things to list in spite of today’s miserable level of division and hate brought to us by the Shiffs, Schumers, Waters’, Pelousys and above them all Clinton!
But…. for me…. the sunrise each morning that I’m fortunate to keep seeing, followed by my wife’s smile and love. After that….. a nice yogurt! 🙂

Well, other than a nice hot pizza, a Pepsi on cracked ice, and “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik,” I’d say somethin like this (Milady’s given name is “Regina” and the blank-verse iambic tetrameter was for her 65th birthday card):

There are those special things and times
Those satisfying sounds and sights
Which give us pleasure, peace, and joy
Without the weight of judging thought,
The gratifying “Aahhhs” of life
Which make the next tomorrow glad.
Such things are gifts of providence
And happen with or without prayer.
Too few are fully recognized
And radiate their warmth and charms
Upon insensate lumps of flesh
Like flowers blooming in a swamp
And trod upon by predators.
Of course some things should not be touched
But simply loved because they are,
Like sunsets with no urban blight
Or snowfields without muddy tracks
Or children sleeping, tired from play —
Just simple beauty at its best.
Some special times need special things:
Dom Perignon for wedding toasts
But orange juice for ham and eggs.
And surfeit only yields contempt,
So men prefer to hunt with men
And escort princesses to plays.
For me those special times occur
Soon after sunrise certain days
When Asian beauty, gentle class,
Serenely plays her Solitaire
Or teases lovingly her pets
As I observe, mere steps away.
A child still lives behind those eyes,
Beneath that strong maturity,
That look without a past of sin
Or selfishness to speak in lines
Around those lips, those eyes, that brow
And spoil the springtime of that smile.
Deep mystery lies in the locks
That frame her healthy woman’s face.
A clean and wholesome purity
Pervades the space she beautifies
And radiates from deep within
The total female that she is.
The best and most successful clans
Of noble Oriental lines
Could not together re-create
A product synthesizing all
The traits and features she displays
In one “Hello” or greeting smile.
And to the ones which did unite
And culminate in her good self
I give my thanks for all those smiles
And special moments she creates
Which start my days on pleasant notes
With pleasant thoughts of pleasant things.
It just can’t be that only I
Can see her in this special light.
If so, then I am greatly blessed
With vision far beyond the norm
And fortune as the only man
Whose days improve when she comes home.

As I’ve aged, I’ve had to adjust my happiness-filled activities. These remain (in no particular ranking):
1. Reading a good novel for two or three hours — without interruptions and especially on a rainy or snowy day. I want a kitty at my feet as I read in bed.
2. Playing fetch with our kitten Minxy. Yes, she fetches!
3. Going to the swimming pool — and alternating between lounge lizard mode and relaxing in the water.
4. Tutoring an eager-to-learn student.
5. Spending time with Mr. AOW.

At this point, an end to winter
Playing with the cats, or watching the cats play
Lunch
A happy wife.

I had a post about this very subject in February. I don’t trust happiness. It’s too transient. Joy is forever and that comes from God the Father through our LORD Jesus Christ. What makes me truly happy though is when I hear of someone accepting Jesus as their LORD and Saviour. I can’t help but to rejoice with them. 🙂

Kid, ya….of course! I remember it well. Just had to laugh at anybody who’d think a GUN meant happiness…except during these days of Second Amendment threats, which I think Jack was referring to!?

I’m most happy when I have my 3 boys and their wives under my roof at the same time. Only happens a few times a year any more. That said, spending time with my wife and sharing a good bottle of cabernet after work. (BTW, we work together in same office all day too 🙂 Just have to wait until after work for the other.

Oh, Jerry……that is marvelous. Sharing a bottle of wine, particularly after spending the day in the same office, sounds like heaven! Mr. Z worked here after he “retired” and he used to say that time when he’d come downstairs and we’d have a drink and chat and watch some news was his favorite time of the day. I loved hearing that.

Somethin which sounds a little self aggrandizing is the pleasure I get after dinner’s done and dishes are done and my foreign student’s lunch is in the fridge…..something about nurturing him, knowing he enjoyed dinner, everything’s clean again, and his lunch is ready for the next day ALWAYS gives me an amazing feeling of happiness and wholeness….yup. Sounds corny, but it’s true. Makes me very happy!
He even is loving the classic old American films I’m showing him…tho he’s 15 and German. He’s a big film buff and has never seen these films..so far, SHADOW OF A DOUBT…and REBECCA, both of which he absolutely loved and commented on really intelligent points about each film…story, music, photography work. That’s a pleasure for me, to share this stuff.
DESTINATION TOKYO and TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD are coming up during Easter break…!
AND any William Kent Krueger novel…brilliant.

Z ~ Oh, no, not offended at all. You’re never flippant. I think you’re very kind and what I like about posts like this it does make one stop and think.
Well, guess one could say I am ‘happy’ it’s just bubbling under the surface. Contentment is a much better state of mind, I think. I’ve learned that we can’t base our happiness on things, or people. Placing my happiness on a person is just too much burden for one person to carry. And, of course, things, don’t love you back and they can be taken away, corrupted, etc. Really, I’m not gloomy. I smile too much (as I’m sure you’ve noticed). Just being a realist. When I’m on the bike there is an overwhelming JOY that fills me up that can be classified as happy. I’m the type that lives in the moment because I know it won’t last. Nothing, but Christ’s love, ever does. 🙂
Hope that makes sense. I am happy just not a lighthearted happy however laughing is one of my favorite things.

But JOY is always there when you’re a believer….at least at one level or another…if nothing else, if things are tough, at least there’s a joy in knowing where we’re going to be!
But then HAPPINESS wells up from time to time….no way can it continue and never stop or that’d be our natural state and we’d not know if we’re happy!~~ HA!!

Happiness is a term I struggle with.
I agree with Sparky.
I most equate happiness with satisfaction and that comes from, as Kid said, a job well done, as Jersey said, owning a gun, driving a well built car.
Happiness, almost by definition, is circumstantial.
Contentedness (or joy) is based on something other than circumstances. Hope of a Promise fulfilled.
Maybe I’m overthinking it.

Ed, I really didn’t think HAPPINESS would be difficult to define or feel, to quantify or qualify…..ever.
Gad…I’m HAPPY to eat my favorite ice cream! I’m HAPPY talking to a dear friend…I’m HAPPY watching my great nieces and nephews or reading a great book.
Those things, and MANY more, make me HAPPY.
I’m sorry it got all metaphysical somehow………..HAPPY? SMILE!!!! I didn’t mean for this to be an exercise….just WHAT MAKES YOU SMILE, WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL PLEASURE, WHAT GIVES YOU JOY?

Well, I like Prager’s take “Happiness is a Serious Problem.” Count your blessings. Have realistic expectations. And it’s a moral obligation — to make life nicer for people around you! It comes hard these days. Perhaps the most comes from my interaction with my group of ladies in my bible study.
