DNA tests…..what did Elizabeth Warren start!??

A high school student I spoke to yesterday said her mother wants her to do a DNA test to see if they do indeed have Native American blood in them.  She said she wants to see if they can get a scholarship for her.  Yes, the family’s very leftwing.

I said I was more an admirer of merit scholarships.  She said she was, too, but Mom……

I’m not kidding.

What’s next?

  1. When the money is on the table, the only thing that keeps you from taking it is integrity.

My children are a genetic stew of Scottish, Irish, English, German, French, Malay, Chinese, and Spanish.

So . . . at this point, what difference does it make? I figger that since none of ’em are in jail, in hiding, invalid, injured, or interred, they’re ahead in the Game of Life.

I must say, however, that I do have concerns about the ancestry of some of our “leaders,” not to mention their upbringing and core values systems. Not sure we wouldn’t find traces of simian, reprobate, flim-flam, and horse thief hiding amongst the leaves in some of their family trees.

We already hit the DNA lottery by being born in the good old USA.. Thats enough for me!

  5. btw – Do you think that this nascent trade war with China is pushing up Trump’s approval numbers?

I was hoping for some Native American in my Ancestry.com DNA test, but it was not to be in spite of my mother’s observations of her mother’s high cheek bones. We turned out to be almost pure British Isle and European stuff, with a touch of Iberian Peninsula and Other. I am the ultimate white privileged dude that has always had to work for a living.

My lunatic aunt (you know, the one that every family has and some keep locked in the attic) used to tell us that her great-grandmother was Shawnee and that we all had Amerind ancestry.

Most of us never believed most of what she came up with, and as far as I know, it’s never been either proven or disproven that there’s native American in our makeup.

One of my cousins got into the ancestry research thing about 20 years ago when she stumbled upon an old ledger that our grandfather kept, so my guess is that were it true, I’d have heard about it by now, since she’s a bit of a magpie.

Long time ago, back in the 50s, somebody researched the family history of my bio-father. All they came up with that’s even mildly interesting is one of my ancestors (a junior officer someplace in Germany in the 18th century) was praised for pushing his commanding officer out of the way of a point-blank cannon shot. He died a hero, according to the source. Kinda stupid if y’ask me.

On my mother’s side, just a buncha Scots and Micks makin ‘shine and tradiin hosses in the hills of West Virginny, east Tennessee, and Kaintuck, mostly Campbells and McCoys. The Brits were of the Hicks variety, not so much into whiskey as into bein quiet and unobtrusive.

Always had a pot and a window to throw it out of, but no large collection of dead presidents’ portraits lyin around drawin interest.

Unfortunately, to qualify for an American Indian scholarship, you family has to appear on a tribal roll. They will not accept a DNA test as evidence.

Bocopro…you’ll like this one “:So, this guy fell in love with a girl . . . and he soon found out she was a whisky maker . . . but he loved her still ” !!

Uchuck the Tuchuck….thanks for that information.
I don’t agree with “unfortunately,” however. How the heck much can America keep paying for every minority just because of being a minority when the Indians are hugely benefited by the casinos, etc? let THEM PAY. Time to PONY UP (so to speak :-)) HA! Educate your children! We’ll be thrilled that they better themselves!
I am a big Native American fan….love some of the folklore, regret much of their history but also understand they weren’t all innocent and the White guys weren’t all bad………I would appreciate your coming again if a subject like this arises. Thanks.
You might want to read Wm Kent Kreuger’s series of books written in Native American areas….fabulous mysteries.

Bob..this is so quotable “I am the ultimate white privileged dude that has always had to work for a living.” Bravo! SUCH white privilege, right? (not)

Bocopro…and my Ancestry.com came up 75% from the areas Armenians come from (mostly Eastern Turkey) and 25% Greek/Italian, and 1% Jewish! Ha!! We were thrilled it wasn’t 100% Armenian because it’s so dull to be 100% anything. I was hoping for English because Mom’s side is reddish haired and light blue eyes, which isn’t terribly Armenian but quite Greek…but since her family were very successful merchants in Istanbul (but NOT TURKISH!), we figure now that some rich ARmenian relative married a beautiful blue-eyed Greek girl, brought her home, and my sisters now have blue-eyed grandchildren 🙂 VOILA!~
I was desperately hoping to find out we were related to Richard the Lionhearted who crusaded himself through Turkey………!!!
And yes, I had a lunatic Aunt, too. BELIEVE ME!

…this is undoubtedly the low hanging fruit of academic financing.

Well said. Let them pay….they’re rich from the casinos…leave US alone.

ALSO, Vrag….re the Chinese trade war; it might be causing Trump’s numbers to go up (in places other than Wall St, of course) but it’s causing, also, the Chinese kids coming to school in America’s numbers to GO DOWN, according to the agent who brings them in to American schools who I work with 😦 I was telling a friend last night that I’m glad Trump’s doing this (I think) but that my income won’t appreciate it if I don’t get a student next year……..I told her “Being a Republican might be biting me in the butt!” We had a good laugh, but…

LOVE THIS (If you’ve heard about this snorting rubbers idiocy?) “Dear kids who are snorting rubbers. Don’t worry, your parents didn’t use them correctly either.”

My portfolio is crashing, but I still think that this is all a good thing. I just need to find investments “better” than corporate stocks.

The Vikings took their red hair all over the place, including Greece and Asia Minor. I’ve long supposed that’s where Henry II (of the Viking Plantagenets) got his red hair.

People always look for ways to have advantages over others. Our society prospered when they looked to skill and acquired acumen. And it’s being torn apart when they fasten on racial identity with the strength of a true Hitlerian national socialist.

  16. Mal says:

Z, its funny you say you had your DNA checked ’cause I’ve been considering doing the same. My daughter had hers done and also her husbands. As for the blue eyes, my father said all the girls in our line had blue eyes too, as did his sister, my sister, and my oldest daughter. Her younger sister had green like my wife. Close, but no cigar!
Of particular interest, in 1950 when we visited the Louvre in Paris there was an ancient map of Asia Minor on the wall with “Tello Accad” written on the map. In front of it was a bust of a mans head that looked exactly like my dad! I took a picture of him side by side with the bust. When a guard came up, he could see the resemblance. Then I showed him our passport, covering the last 3 letters most Armenian have on their surname (ian) and he saw it was Tello. He smiled, shaking his head.

  17. geeez2014 says:

Mal, that “Tello Accad” story is WILD….wow!! You should look more into that! There’s an Armenian DNA expert working on my grandmother’s side now.
And yes, your sis had beautiful blue eyes!

Baysider, many Greeks have blue eyes…it’s all so fascinating.

AN F-16 HAS CRASHED NEAR LAS VEGAS…TWO CRASHES YESTERDAY…FOUR MARINES DEAD YESTERDAY…………I’m hearing these are largely caused by a lack of readiness; old machinery, etc. I hate to say what I’d do if MY son or husband died because they had old planes or bad maintenance…MY GOD.

  18. geeez2014 says:

Vrag, I’m afraid for my portfolio, too………but it IS up 220 now…a 700 point turnaround in one day!?

  19. Mal says:

Z, after I relayed the Tello Accad story to my sis, when she and John visited Paris in the 1960’s and wanted to go into the Louvre, some French Armenian relatives that were with her discouraged her, saying “Aw! You don’t want to go in there!” and when she kept insisting, they kept stopping her, so she never got a chance to even see it or ask anything. It makes me so mad they did that to her.
What is Accad? Does anyone what it is or means?
