It’s amazing what America did in those days and I feel this information is worthy of Independence Day because it was AMERICA-LOVING CITIZENS BEHIND ALL THAT BUILDING UP FOR WORLD WAR II, THAT GREAT SENTIMENT OF “AMERICA FIRST” AND HELPING OTHERS, AND THAT HUGE AMOUNT OF VOLUNTEERS WHO SIGNED UP TO FIGHT FOR WHAT’S RIGHT!

It certainly looks like this Independence Day has our country moving in the direction envisioned by our Founding Fathers. Let’s hope this movement continues. I know I’m happier for my country today than I’ve been in years.

What a wonderful and great list of accomplishments, bravery and fortitude, that all began with a “bunch of White European men” who were so darn smart their incredible foresight took into account what might or could happen in the future, decades after their passing, which maintains its integrity 200+ years later.

Hijabs never made sense to me, even from the male Arab perspective. Like covering their face and hair makes them less distracting or tempting to them? One need only look at the U.S. 100 years ago when simply seeing a bare ankle got them excited, or the bloomer type bathing suits, etc. and comparing that to todays string bikinis. Then we can look at African tribes where little or no clothing is worn.
Before the present regime took over, Iranian women enjoyed wearing western style clothes and the freedom it allowed them. The extreme policies and beliefs the new regime demanded somehow needs to be overthrown with the help of its neighbors. We are banking on the embargo of their oil to aid in that endeavor. I would believe the Iranian people are cheering Trump’s policies.

Mal, I look at the Hijab as a kind of symbol…if women are truly abandoning it in large enough numbers, and we know Iranians are coming to Christianity in larger numbers than their gov’t will admit, too, this could mean a more peaceful people…against the rabid islamist ayatollah-type hatred toward anything not muslim.
This is why I’m the sole person who doesn’t think ALL MUSLIMS ARE BAD around here…there is hope, I’ll NEVER not believe that.

There are some verses in that link which mention New Testament reasons women can choose to wear a head covering…As you might remember, in the Armenian Orthodox church (and others, too) we can take a lace head covering when we approach the altar for Communion, which I think is a beautiful thing…and we put it back in a basket after having taken Communion….this is a sweet gesture of humility ….
And, of course, the article I linked is only New Testament…,,,Jewish men wear a Yarmulke to show submission, respect and honor to God. The two wonderful Jewish guys in a great group of 5 of us who meet at my house about every six weeks wear a yarmulke most of the time…one is a trained rabbi, the other is a devoted Jew…both are utterly brilliant and we study the Old Testament (after we’ve had dinner, drunk wine, laughed a lot, and discussed our conservative politics!))
All that to say that, while I feel wearing a head covering is a bit oppressive, I think it’s better for women to decide what to wear, not the men in their leadership…as the Iranian woman says in the piece I linked in my above comment!!

Z, I went to Catholic school in Manhattan when I was 10-11 years of age. It irked me at the time that us girls had to wear small veils bobby-pinned to our heads before we entered the church, while the boys got off scotfree. You mentioned that it is the call of the Bible for women to wear something between their head and authority. Why? That never sat well with me. For that and many other reasons, I’ve been a lapsed Catholic for a very long time.

Cube. That was a middle eastern custom for years, and the apostle Paul mentioned it in a letter to the church because so many women were being set free by the gospel and removing their head covering that it was shocking the neighbors.
The covering that nuns wear is reminiscent of the hijab. Protestants don’t play those games 🙂

Hotdogs, now you’re talking. I grew up in Manhattan so Coney Island dogs were a treat and I was delighted when I found out that Nathan’s dogs were sold at my closest Publix years later in Florida.. Since those days, the hot dog field has prospered beyond belief in numerous varieties. I love them all, but, in case I can have a preference, save a couple of skin-on ones for me. Love the first bit. Oh and please, chase out anyone who wants to use catsup as a condiment. I’m with Dirty Harry on this one, “They’re communists.” 😉

I attended the Ypsilanti Independence Day Parade this morning, and a local politician known for passing out free hot dogs was doing it today. He’s a lefty.
His people were following his float passing out foil wrapped hot dogs.
I took one.
Ketchup.

Cube, that’s Biblical, respect….it’s like Protestants protesting incense! “It smells BAD” “Why do that?” Actually, it’s the ‘fragrance of Christ” mentioned so often in Scripture. It’s a beautiful illustration of that…
You felt ‘upset’ that boys didn’t have to wear anything on their heads and girls did and I was, and still am, touched by the custom. Nobody’s right/nobody’s wrong.
Nathan’s ARE good…but 74 of them in 10 minutes? Believe me, if we were only going on taste, and not size of tummy, I’d be right there, though……!!

Ed, no ‘game’ about it. It was a ‘middle eastern custom’ direct from Scripture. I go to a Protestant church now and am grateful for two fabulous pastors, but I feel so richly blessed and informed by my Orthodox upbringing…and the richness of those traditions. I don’t feel threatened by them.
Just fyi, I’m hoping we can get on the topic at hand today…..I think there was big relevance of the hijab and head coverings in the Christian church, and wanted to bring that up to Mal. thanks.

Z, yes, I DO remember the women in the Armenia Church puting a lace cover for their head during communion, and if the Arab women wearing a cover denotes she is under the authority of her husband, what about the single women who aren’t? Are they perhaps still considered under their fathers authority even if they’re adults? Interesting.

Cube and Mal…….I have never in my life heard anything about authority or submission in regard to the head covering for Communion…never….it’s always been a beautiful custom which I believe shows respect and adoration. That’s it for me!
Besides, men would just look silly in a small veil 🙂
Example: In all churches I see today, young people wear ripped-knee jeans (even to sermonize), bare feet or flip flops, …it’s pretty clear they got up that morning, threw on a pair of jeans, pulled a Tshirt on and came to church.
Many say “Isn’t that GREAT! They know Jesus doesn’t care how we come to worship! SO COOL!”
I say “You can do what you want…..but if we don’t dress a little nicer to WORSHIP GOD, then …wassup?”
Just differences in opinion…….as I said above…no right, no wrong. Just different.

Cube, while I’m not an especially big fan of ‘hot dogs’ I do love a good bratwurst as made by a favorite local pig farmer with savory, fat laden heritage pigs. I sliver off pieces and enjoy them morsel by morsel.

Baysider, and as I said somewhere above, when it’s a bratwurst as good as they get (like yours or in Munich), NO MUSTARD, just that roll.
I am a HUUUGE foodie and so I set store on food experiences….having lived in Europe, and married to another HUGE foodie, I have quite a few stories of THE BEST restaurants …BUT, we almost always preferred a village restaurant where the owners are cooking!
Here is one of my Top 3 Food Experiences:
Having left German class, it’s start to lightly snow, not too cold and I’m warmly dressed, having walked about a mile to the Marienplatz (Munich’s main square) I see the Christmas Market….it’s noon, and overcastly dark and there are lights strung everywhere, reflecting on the little children’s faces as they gaze at all the goodies sold in the wood kiosks…dolls, clocks, etc….LOVELY THINGS.
On a corner is a bratwurst stand……I order one, DELICIOUS, on a ‘zemmel’, or German roll, find it too good to put anything on it, and stand there, slowly eating this delicious hot/skin-crunchy, gorgeous inside texture/amazing sausage and fabulous bread, watching the light snow come down, and looking at the Christmas market, with the VERY tall (5 stories?) Christmas tree in from of the City Hall in the background.
I will NEVER forget it!!

FUnny…my German student and I had American hot dogs a month or so ago..I made them American buns placed over the boiling hot dog water so they get beautifully soft and HOT like a ballpark dog (not too soft, be careful!), ..I told him some people use catsup ‘and would you like it?’ he said he would and I told him “Just try the French’s mustard here and the sweet relish and see..”
He took a bite and said ‘NO CATSUP, this is fabulous” 🙂

Z, as a woman having to cover her head in church isn’t the same thing as wearing ripped jeans to church. The whole idea of women having to wear something between their head and authority makes me as angry as it did when I was that little ten year girl back in New York.

Cube, I look at it as a choice of worship. Worshiping in ripped jeans and Tshirts isn’t worship to me…. Slipping a small lace veil on my hair for Communion is extremely worshipful to me because I do look at God as having ‘authority’ over me, for which I’m so truly grateful.
Everybody has their own feelings about both these things.

Z, your German student is very wise when it comes to mustard on hot dogs. I would never think of you as a communist, but putting catsup on a hot dog is considered subversive in some parts of New York. I’m just saying.

Z, I understand and respect your choice of worship, but I always get back to the question that this slipping of the veil on your head only applies to women. Why not men? I don’t mean to be a dunderhead about it, but I guess I am because it still, after all these years, doesn’t sit well with me.

My mom used to wear some lace thingy on her head when we went to church when I was a wee lad. Even then I realized it symbolized reverence. Men and women have always had different roles in the Catholic church going all the way back to Jesus. My wife is a protestant convert but the ‘dogma lives loudly’ within her and she wishes we would go back to that. Only one woman in our congregation still wears one. Anyways…. did someone say ‘hot dogs?’ Mustard mostly, but one out of one hundred – catchup is just fine with me.

Milady, who is old-fashioned Spanish-style Roman catholic, wore a mantilla veil to her father’s funeral.
I know it’s inappropriate for me to say so, but I found it exotic, enchanting, and downright lovely.
Her mourning dress was black lace, too, with caught sleeves which were quite transparent. All the ladies in the family were in full black, and some kept their faces covered at all times during the ceremony and litany and rituals.
This was in Quezon City, by the way (Manila), so it was unbearably hot. Donno how they could stand there in the blazing sun in those black outfits.
I, not being observant of their customs and obligations, made myself scarce a lot and spoke only when directly addressed, usually something like “Mmm Hmm” or “Yes.”

Z, when I said submission or authority, I was referring to the hijab worn by Arab women and not veils worn by the Armenians, Catholics, or anyone else.
