THIS ARTICLE discusses the chart above and more. The chart is a Pew Poll of Americans….Republicans and Democrats. I was surprised by this:
“A large majority of Republicans (77%) react negatively to “socialism,” while 62% have a positive reaction to “capitalism.” Democrats’ impressions are more divided: In fact, about as many Democrats react positively to “socialism” (44%) as to “capitalism” (47%).”.
Or maybe I should say appalled instead of surprised?

Words – love ‘em. Like to make ‘em up, too . . . neologisms, words for the nonce, hybrids . . . stuff like ‘televiolence’ and ‘frammis’ and ‘radumflab’ AND my all-time favorite, ‘straffle’ (a term I coined late one nite while being pressured by my CO to fix a stubborn piece of electronics which didn’t wanna behave properly).
He kept askin exactly what was wrong with it so he could put it in the official report (CasRept) he had to send off to the squadron commander. Long story about terms with which he was unfamiliar and thought I was BSing him with, so I finally said, “Cap’n, see this part here? Well, it’s straffled, and Supply doesn’t have a spare. So there’s really nothing I can do.”
I guess the word sounded legit, ‘cause he bought it, actually put it in the report: “Goniometer in Loran C straffled. No replacement part O/B.” I was SO proud . . . like giving birth to a new life form. (Later I actually fixed that component by sawing off the bottom and re-seating the oscillator crystal, then soldering it back together. Captain thought I was a genius.)
But words rarely offend or disgust me. A strong residual kernel of decent behavior still smouldering in my core from my grandmother’s training prevents me from using certain words in mixed company, especially around das kinder, and there are a few which simply don’t pop to the surface in my thought stream, ever.
Generally I prefer looking at the world from oblique perspectives, kinda slaunchwise, seeing the oft-entertaining antics of silly naked bipedal anthropoids from angles which make me invisible to them, sorta kittycornered and in colors and intensities which don’t really exist.
Yeah, I’m gonna hafta go with George Carlin’s take on words, ‘specially those which are “banned” or “dangerous.”

ALSO, I think it was FOX’s Melissa Francis who said she used to wait tables (Why? When you did years on Little House on the PRairie and had to have had residuals, come to think of it$$$~)….she said TIPS were a perfect example of showing how socialism doesn’t work because they’d pool their tips and divide them at the end of the night, which didn’t please the waiters who worked harder and got bigger tips. Finally, she realized those better waiters didn’t put ALL their tips into the cup to be divided, they held some back! I loved that.

Democratic Socialism, National Socialism (Nazism), Fascisim, Communism are all close socially and economically, and are all left wing. Never let anyone tell you that the Nazi’s were right wing. Nazism is a child of socialism. It is just a matter of who is running the big, controlling government. The founder of Fascism, Mussolini, was a socialist.
It is no accident that socialism tends to morph into not only autocratic states like the old Soviet Union, Hitler’s Germany, Mussolini’s Italy, Mao’s China, Castro’s Cuba, Viet Nam, Venezuela, etc.
Right wing means less government and more individual freedom, especially economic freedom to the point of advocating free markets. Note that market forces underlie every economy known to mankind. Even communism cannot escape it.
With government controls, black MARKETS form and bloom. Capitalism is run by markets which have enriched more people in history than any other economic system. Market forces are like gravity, they are always there and only fools who espouse socialistic systems like communism, Democratic Socialism, partial socialism, Nazism and Fascism will eventually fail because you cannot ignore market forces, let alone gravity.

Years ago the great theologian of the 20th Century Karl Barth gave an address to a group of people in Germany. It was before WWII.
He was in fact addressing socialism and one thing he talked about was how the meaning of that word had changed in usage and understanding over time. He was warning about the coming perils of Hitler.
I often wonder Barth was correct and whether how we understand words does change over time with the culture. If that is true, is it possible that the socialism correct thinking Americans rail against, that which produced death and destruction directly from the murderous hands tyrants like Hitler, is not the type of socialism that 45% is looking for?
Is it possible that the meaning of the word that some vilify, is not the meaning of the word others seem to desire?

There are two kinds of socialism. Democratic socialism and social democracy. The former requires the government to own the means of production. The latter does not.
In America and Europe, we have a kind of “social democracy” with safety nets and parachutes for the poor and/or needy to cure the excesses of corporate capitalism. What the Progressive Left is driving for is ownership of the means of production (Bernie Sanders claims to the contrary, notwithstanding). Just this morning, Elizabeth Warren was trying to make corporations more “socially responsible“… but believe me, ownership of the means of production is what she’s driving at.

Dave, yes, I think so, definitely. But the sharing of all expenses equally, or the attempt to, is always wrong for correct-thinking America. Millions died under socialist dictators, Venezuela is a total disaster due to (today’s) socialism , yet NYC has a high school named after an avowed Socialist, Norman Thomas. Do I think Americans who toy with socialism want millions killed? Of course not. Do I think denying the hard workers to get rich is wrong? Yes, and if you think Alexandria Ocasia-Cortez and Bernie and many, many more Democrat SOcialists don’t want that, you’re not listening.
FJ..people say Sweden is socialist and how wonderful it’s doing…sadly, it’s falling apart. Even sadder, our leftwing media doesn’t talk about it. They can’t ignore Venezuela.

Dave, what city is your blog masthead picture? I remember Mexico City’s surrounds as beige/brown/cardboard house ugly………….your pic is gorgeous. I wish I had happy memories of Mexico but I was only in Mex City……and parts of that are nice, like La Zona Roza, but…ugh…the ground’s crooked in the Squares, …the seats were hanging off their frames at the airport. UGLY, SAD, AWFUL. I didn’t even like the food, which is one of my very fave cuisines here in Santa Monica.

My personal observation:
Words, and what they purport to mean, is the art form of legalists. It is no wonder that most lawyers obtain their undergraduate degrees in English or English Literature. Most people aren’t legalists, however, and as a consequence, most folks do not know what words mean. The problem is further complicated by the fact that the meaning of words and their usage changes over time. There was a time, for example, when the word “progressive” suggested a government policy designed to improve the lives of Americans. The birth of the Food and Drug Administration is an example of this; given the circumstances of the early 1900’s we can hardly argue that the FDA was a bad idea. Since then, however, progressive policy has been a steady march to the left, toward socialism (which Vladimir Lenin tells us whose only purpose is communism). It is no surprise to me that we find today organizations such as the U. S. Department of Agriculture devising policy and programs designed to enroll illegal aliens into the taxpayer-funded federal welfare assistance program.
Do programs such as this really improve the lives of taxpaying Americans? Do programs such as the USDA program actually move us forward, or is it really “regression?” Well, it may be progress according to the neo-communist definition … which fits very nicely into the Piven-Fox intention of overwhelming America’s social welfare system … so that America’s governmental infrastructure collapses.
Side note: Looking around at the countries who lean heavily toward socialism, including ours, what you find … especially among its primary beneficiaries, are very angry people. I wonder why that is … because it seems to me that if there should be any angry people, it ought to be those hardworking souls who pay for “free crap” for a wide range of people who are too lazy, too stupid, or too clever by far to earn their own way.
So, I wonder why progressivism is (according to the study) so popular among republicans? It forces us to consider that “republican” doesn’t suggest “conservative”. As I said, this is only my personal observation, but it would seem to me that people or groups that conduct studies ought to spend some time clarifying what they mean by “republican.” Otherwise, the studies themselves offer us only a confused sense of what the respondents in these studies actually represent within our society.

Sadly, there’s a very fine line between Conservatives and Republicans….I don’t mean in ideology, I say ‘fine line’ because we’re stuck ….if we divide the party, we’re dead FOREVER AND EVER, AMEN.
Let there be a Conservative candidate, Republican candidate, and Democrat candidate, and the party is over for America. Period. Also, I’d not say progressivism is “SO popular” with Republicans…not yet. I blame universities probably 90% for whatever we see in once-conservative children of conservative parents who went away to school and became LIBERAL…I personally know more families this has happened to than I’d like to think about.
SO, I tend to lean REPUBLICAN out of default…tho I so don’t admire many of them, people I used to admire, by the way. Something has happened to them.
ANGRY PEOPLE ARE USUALLY LEFTISTS, many studies have been done on that…..Republicans WORK, have no time for daytime street protests (nobody’s paying them for it), they’re independent and largely successful, so they’re happier…also more religious which studies have shown make one happier.
Even if Trump gets rid the Dept of Education, or other groups you mention, the next Democrat will reinstate…..
We’re toast………..we have men who became women winning elections, we have muslims who hang out with Farrakhan winning elections, we have men marrying men…………America’s gone. No matter how much we think things could change……
I think of our Founding Fathers and I shudder for them. (By the way, I am a rarity in that I feel homosexuality is usually not chosen, but I do wish the gays in society today just lived their lives as they have for hundreds of years, we don’t need championing it…etc.)

Bob, I’ve also heard that the gov’t buys a LOT of ammunition…from stores all over the country….prohibiting gun owners to buy much because it’s unavailable.
Who IS the gov’t coming after? It certainly has no desire to truly fight illegal immigration (not that I’d advocate shooting anyone!), it lets muslim extremist/terrorists go when they’ve killed kids and trained others to kill OUR kids………….it has people like Brennan as Dir of the CIA…
Who are they after? AND, they have slammed militia types for years and years…..not that I’d be a big militia fan if things weren’t as bad as they are today.

My point about posting this is how Reps and Dems see things so differently… and yes, college kids would be a huge part of, for example, the Reps who veer toward Socialism….I can’t tell you how many Conservative parents I’ve asked “What about your kids?” of and they 90% say “Liberals”….90%.

So, I have this YouGov First Verdict polling app on my phone. They ask a few questions each weekday, usually current events but can get into different areas. There are options to see how different political associated people or men vs women answered the questions. The democrats answer ever relative question as anti-American as you can possibly get. They pick the answer that is as far from my answer as they can get. Interestingly, men and women track pretty close.

Z… it from Guanajuato… the capital of the state of the same name. Guanajuato is the home of the mother lode of silver that was discovered in Mexico and taken to Spain and France.
It’s one of my favorite cities, truly gorgeous.
And yes, I get it on Mexico City… to me, it’s the 900 million pound gorilla. But now without it’s charm if you know where to look.

My sister-in-law and her husband moved to San Miguel from Seattle about 14 years ago and they love it. He died about 3 years ago and had worked as a bldg. inspector for new construction. They still have to capture water from the roof piped down to a barrel or something for water because there is no other source. No thanks. I’ll pass.

San Miguel is widely proclaimed as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. And yes, there are plenty of ex-pats living there. Honestly, the American contingent makes a huge difference in the quality of life in that area. But don’t take it from me… those are the words of politicians I know who are from there.
They will openly say that the Americans have made a real, positive difference.

MAL, they had to do that ‘capturing water’ thing many years ago in N. California, too! My quite wealthy girlfriend and her doctor hubby had to have a hose in their upstairs shower so the water could run off the shower floor and into the garden down below outside the window!
California’s water is VERY badly handled because there’s a VERY tiny fish that does nobody ANY good which, the Left feels, needs protection..
Trump was absolutely right in his comments about bad water mgmt here and I laughed out loud at Jerry Brown’s response that CALIFORNIA’S JUST FINE WITH WATER. WHat a freakin’ LIAR.

Z, your comment about America is gone and we’re toast. I don’t know, but I sure hope not and that you’re wrong. Judging from history, you may be right. I guess I’m hoping we’ve learned enough from the past that we won’t make the same mistakes. Our system of democracy is unique and can survive only if the will of the people deem it important enough and the millions of lives sacrificed protecting it are appreciated enough. Its imperative that this is pounded into the heads of our kids.
