I had a rather long chat with a teenager of Mexican heritage today at school….such a thoughtful, bright, sweet girl…. I could tell I was REALLY raising her eyebrows because she’s heard ONE WAY of looking at things and I so softly and subtly but assuredly told her the truth ….how Obama started the anti-cop downhill slide after Prof Henry Gates’ incident, how Trump’s laughed at for pulling out of the climate accord and how the media ‘forgot to mention’ that he added “…but we want to keep working hard toward clean air and water”….”really?” she asked. “Yup!” says I.
I told her the wonderful Churchill line about liberals and conservatives…all heart if you’re young and liberal, but no brain if you’re older and liberal……… I could see the wheels spinning.
I reminded her that if we take in SO many foreigners and pay and pay and pay, this country will be as broke as all the others, not the special country anymore with a big heart which can help others….”We’ll be broke,” says I.
We talk about Socialism and she was ALL OVER hating that…hurrah!
I love these moments…SO MUCH I can’t tell you. To the point where she finally asked “Mrs. Z, how did you find your voice and be able to talk about these things?”
I said “You make sure you’re well up on the subject so you can talk from what you know, you talk about things you are passionate about but do NOT get too passionate because then you immediately lose your audience….just try it, don’t stop, just be smart…”

Thanks for the encouragement, Kid…I’m afraid Mr and Mrs. Z both were SO passionate on conservatism we did turn people off. I have to work HARD at being subtler and softer, and today was a good feeling…and I KNOW she heard it. Lovely girl..

People who are too emotional are often dismissed immediately. I believe it is an instinctual thing even with dumb people. Calmly, Logically. If that don’t work nothing will.
