Not sure ‘zackly why, but while watchin the early part o’ that I got to wonderin why no banjo . . . plenty o’ 6-strings, and that fella on the 4-string is goo-ood . . . I mean, if you’re gonna play in Texas, you gotta have a fiddle in the band. But sooner or later there just HASTA be a 5-string or you ain’t talkin Country . . . and apparently they knowed that and brung in a Scruggs.

Anyhow, fiddle triggered me on “Cotton-Eyed Joe,” and that linked me to “Bleedin-Eye Joe” (Biden), and THAT took me to ‘nuther song that tells a story ’bout life — “Shop Around” by the Miracles.

    So, nacherly, I rewrote it:

Gropey Joe, you’ve become an old man now
And there’s much that you can’t understand now
So before you campaign for command now
Keep your marbles so you know where they are now
    Just lemme say this:
    You better go sit down.

There’s some stuff that we don’t wanna know now
And it looks like the gaffes won’t get slow now
The slips’ll come and the numbers will get low now
Before the voters say you gotta go now
    Just lemme tell you . . .
    You better take a nap.

Try to get your thoughts together, Gropey
Don’t just ramble and come off like Dopey
The job’s a killer and you’re dumber than dirt
Get off the stage before you lose your last shirt

Instead of sayin lotsa stupid things now
Go home before the fat lady sings now
You’re not the stuff of US kings now
It’s sad to see you takin all those dings now
    Just take my advice —
    You better give it up.

I love SHOP AROUND and your lyrics work WELL! Thanks!!!

Kid, Mark O’Connor is probably the best fiddler ever and also plays classical, which blew my mind.
And the fun C&W musicians has comes through……..ANY tune they do is fun, excellent, and I always feel their looks at each other while playing say things like ‘Oh, MAN, this harmony ROCKS …” or “You just played the heck out of that” or “Can you BELIEVE we’re playing with Perkins?” just warms my heart.

When I sang in groups of 4-6 singers, my friend Susie sang with us sometimes…at rehearsals around the piano, you couldn’t believe some of the harmonies…5 part harmonies…astonishing….she and I would just look at each other and know what the other was thinking..”Bliss…and we’re part of this!”
By the way, my sheet music would have sometimes 4 different felt-tip colors over the notes because I was the one who sang all the harmonies so if someone couldn’t show up, our producer would say “Z! sing that part tonight” !!!

All this stuff is fodder for the wall street boys to move the market in the direction they want to move it. Notice ‘bad news’ is often ignored, and ‘good news’ is often ignored. It takes much more than the price of oil to have any lasting (more than a few days) to have an impact on ‘the market’.

One thing I’ve learned over watching that sucker over the years.

Z, Not even I – the Oracle of Cincinnati – have any idea what the wall street boys have in mind for the market ever. But I will say most everyone likes a Bull Market. Trading Short is very hard as rallies in falling markets are vicious.

The smartest guy I’ve ever read over the years is now retired but I’m still going with his call that we are in a bull market for many years to come.

Couple thoughts: Since 1929, bear markets have never lasted more than 3 years. 1929, 2000, 2007.
The market is like a beach ball that someone is trying to hold underwater. Much money is constantly being added (401’s, etc) and that money has to go somewhere. And in an environment where you can’t even make 0.02 on a CD, the only way to make money is in the market. If I could make 5% on a CD, I’d be happy to put a bunch into a CD. But not today..

Mal, Also, depreciation is nice for the taxes and if you don’t sell before leaving the property to your heirs, it is possible they will not have that burden when they sell. Do you know if that’s true or not?

Guy I work with is about to inherit millions in stock owned by his parents when they pass on. Word is when the stock is transferred to him, the cost basis becomes the price at that time. Sweet.

Kid, yes, I recently asked about that and its true. After you depreciate a bldg. that when sold would trigger a tax based on the price you paid minus the depreciation, that wouldn’t apply to your heirs when they sell after your death. It would be totally tax free! Great, huh? I was the executor of my father’s trust and although he no longer had real estate none of his assets were taxable. We got everything tax-free, and I found out the same holds true for any real estate being sold from the trust.
It was a slam-dunk! The guy I asked I’ve known since he was a 16 year old neighbor when we lived in the San Fernando Valley. He later got his doctors degree in accounting and retired after 35 years at Cal State Northridge as a professor in accounting, so I’m pretty certain about it.

Kid, also about your friend at work, I don’t think he would owe anything. The original cost of the stock shouldn’t matter if thats true with real estate, but who knows? It might be, but I wouldn’t think it would be fair if it did.

Kid, then its another reason to favor investing in R.E. as opposed to the stock market, right?
Also, while you wait for it to appreciate, its paying you dividends every month. I admit there is some servicing required, but still worth the trouble. Thats another reason I never believed in precious metals (gold, silver, etc). No income, and it has gone down, too., which doubles the hurt.

Mal, has gold gone DOWN? I didn’t get as much as most wives get when Mr. Z died, for a lot of reasons, but I did have some cash I felt I should invest….and I thought gold was important but a wealthy cousin told me not to and I didn’t. I’ve felt like I did the wrong thing all these 10 years; sounds like you don’t think so. Seems like gold never really goes too down because it’s GOLD, not paper, not stock, not real estate…..you know? Was my cousin right? I mean, he’s VERY comfortable and I’m very NOT, (!) so I guess he did something right…more than i have, anyway 🙂

Gold is a strange market. Impossible to trade. In for the long haul or not at all imo.

Personally, I like the S&P500 – America Inc. Bet on America or not bet on America. I use SPXL which moves at a three times pace as the SPX. SPX up 1% = SPXL up 3%. Or down in the eame %.

MAL, Trading Gold is a losers game. Even investing in it imo. Way too gamed and there are no catalysts to move it. Total perception. Apple sells 100 million iphones vs 50 million the last time out and the Apple stock price is going UP. No such driver for gold. It beats fiat currency but you could wait decades for any price movement. Not for me.

Z, Well, there are two ways to invest in or trade Gold. You can buy the physical metal, have it shipped to you house where you hide it somewhere and hope that at some future point, someone will pay you more for it than you paid. Or you can ‘paper trade’ You buy an ETF (Exchange Traded Fund) GLD at some price and hope to sell that at a price more than you paid for it.

    https://stockcharts.com/h-sc/ui?s=GLD&p=D&b=5&g=0&id=p14573670554
So if you bought GLD through your brokerage account (ie. TDAmeritrade) in early June at 124 and sold it today at 140 then life be good. But who knows where the price will be two months from now.

So SPXL is an ETF that has its basis as the SPX (S&P500 Index). If the S&P500 moves 15 on Monday – up or down, then SPXL will move 3% up or down in the same direction. It’s like a casino.
    🙂
But you are making your bet on America, Inc, since the individual stocks that make up the SPX are 500 companies that pretty much make up America INC.

    To wit – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_S%26P_500_companies
As the stock price of these individual companies rise or fall, the net effect will be the rise or fall of the S&P500.

The other main American indices are the DOW – 30 industrial companies that make up the DOW Jones Index. The media LOVES to talk about the DOW because the absolute value of rise and fall is a much larger number than the other indexes. ie, the DOW rose 500 points! (or 1%) while the S&P500 rose 30 points, (also 1%). More exciting to talk about the DOW’s 500 points than the SPXs 30 points. The DOW is meaningless. Who care what Alcoa’s earnings are for example. The other main American Index is the Nasdaq which is made up of mostly Tech based companies. Intel, Computer Chips, Solar, etc.

Finally, I wouldn’t buy a Bitcoin if my life depended on it.

Make sense at all Z? I’d be more than happy to keep plugging away of not. It’s not an easy subject.

The main reason a lot of folks buy precious metals is insurance against a failing monetary system. Well, for that reason, what better security can one have than real estate? After all, you can’t eat metals or gems, or live on it like real estate. They keep finding and digging up more and more metals and gems, but they can’t make more real estate!
