MONDAY Sunday Faith Blog!!

The DECLINE IN CHRISTIANITY, an interesting and sad read.   I had this planned for yesterday but why bring us down on Sunday?    From the article:

“More than eight-in-ten members of the Silent Generation (those born between 1928 and 1945) describe themselves as Christians (84%), as do three-quarters of Baby Boomers (76%). In stark contrast, only half of Millennials (49%) describe themselves as Christians; four-in-ten are religious “nones,” and one-in-ten Millennials identify with non-Christian faiths.

Only about one-in-three Millennials say they attend religious services at least once or twice a month. Roughly two-thirds of Millennials (64%) attend worship services a few times a year or less often, including about four-in-ten who say they seldom or never go. Indeed, there are as many Millennials who say they “never” attend religious services (22%) as there are who say they go at least once a week (22%).”

I’m surprised that the numbers are that high today, frankly, although I see church attendance fairly robust even among twenty-somethings even in very secular Santa Monica lately.    Still 84% to 49% sure is a drop.

I guess you all see a correlation between kindness, goodness, respect and dignity (to name only a few) while people were professing faith and what’s going on with kindness, goodness, respect and dignity today.   Is much left?  Sure, more than most of us think.  But as much as it was?  Children being raised without fathers, drug addiction numbers increasing horribly, teen suicides up, veterans’ suicides up, divorce considered normal, very high rates of depression and homelessness….we could all go on and on.   Was that all happening even 75 years ago?  Sure.

SO, what can we do?

Faith feels SO much better than NO FAITH (oh, brother, does it), but NO FAITH sure does pave the way for what our kids think is fun and even normal.   Until their friends are vaped into a coffin because they didn’t know it’s not drugs which fill the void.

  1. From Kid’s link:

[T]his present generation is moving away from Christianity.

They have been programmed to from the moment they started kindergarten in public school.

Ever since Liberals took over America’s Education System, they have been constantly socially engineering America’s schoolchildren “in the way in which THEY believed that they should go”.

And that is the hideous truth! 😦

  2. Z,
When the church no longer “feeds the flock,” the flock moves away.

For a long time, church-dom hasn’t been “feeding the flock “consistently since the mid 1950s.

  3. Law and Order Teacher says:

Asking people if they go to Church is a tricky question, for sure. People getting up on a Sunday morning is more laziness than anything. I respect that there are those among us who are morally upright and don’t go to church. Some churches say that all is required to go to heaven is a personal relationship with Jesus. Whatever that actually means. Church is an opportunity to worship in community. The Catholic Church calls it Holy Mass. I don’t think I care to dictate to others about church attendance. I like going to Mass because of the ceremony and the music. I read the Bible, but I’m certainly not a scholar. But to profess your fealty to the Catholic Church and still support abortion is wrong. As I’m sure it is in most Christian churches. It’s a tough subject.

  4. Baysider says:

Even then I’m sure all 84% weren’t deeply committed Christians. But it’s a recognition of the culture and that you willingly put yourself within the boundaries of Christian behaviors. The great breakout came in the 60’s, with open rebellion against not just doctrine but attitudes and behavior which our education system has aggressively sought to change for the worse.

Baysider, yes, but then there was what they called the JESUS MOVEMENT during that time, which I always cringe about when I hear the term……..!! LSD and JESUS apparently went well together!?~ And no, I don’t believe 84% of Americans were ever deeply committed Christians.

L&OT…No way do I think going to church is any test of ANYTHING…it’s an added pleasure if one’s a believer and that’s it! It adds to our pleasure, it adds to our knowledge, it adds community in our lives but it is no STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN, is it!!!
Abortion shouldn’t really be a tough subject. We might not go to church and that’s TOTALLY fine, but abortion? WOWZIR.

AOW, “YES” to all you said….absolutely true! The church started only giving pablum…bad idea!

  6. geeez2014 says:

Kid, that is an excellent article, thank you! And AOW captured the really hard stuff in it, didn’t she.

Vladimir Lenin “Give me just one generation of youth, and I’ll transform the whole world.” is included in that article.
And it’s happened. Not ‘happenING” …it’s happenED.

SO, you’re right….this is it….nothing will change it.

I have a little group of 3 girls at my high school who meet every Monday for an hour and I call the ‘class’ FAITH POWER…..just talking about their faith, personal situations, etc….today I asked them “How can we get more kids involved in faith?” just today, 3 hours ago!
We’re talking still about that……..very uphill climb.

    But God always wins.

  7. Z,
Yes, God always wins. Eventually. The timing is His call.

I have no ‘name’ for this comment that went into my Moderation but wanted to publish it …it says

“But there IS something in the Bible about being gay, Z. It says a man shall not lay down with another man. Can it be any clearer?”

This is in Leviticus and most people who are even nominally Christian are well aware ot it….I would have mentioned it were it not for the fact that MANY have twisted it to where they believe it does not mean that man should not lay down with another man. Consider Pete Butigieg (sp?), for example..I believe he does not believe that’s what God ‘means’!! But, of course, it’s so clear you have to hugely ideological to be able to twist i.

I changed the word this commenter used for ‘gay’…..for the record.
