I’ve long thought that what happened to and with Squanto as a miracle. Or call it Providence — still, a miracle in my book.

Well, the only show I’ve been watching on TV is on the History Channel, Tuesday at 9 pm, or on demand, is The Curse of Oak Island. It’s a small island in Nova Scotia where it is said that treasure is buried by visitors between the late 1600’s and early 1700’s. Much evidence has been found to support that British military, pirates, and even the Knights Templar were there and very active during the time great events were happening around the world. Briefly, for example, they’ve found large wooden structures of very large and heavy hand square cut timbers assembled into structures 170 feet down. They found these by drilling, not excavating, as even with modern equipment that can be used on the island, it is extremely difficult and expensive to go down that far. Dangerous as well due to cave ins which occur easily when digging down into the Earth. Various objects such as coins, tools, an iron cross believed to be from the Knights Templar, and other items are easily dated to this period in time and many items places of origination determined by experts in the various related fields.
The point being that the pilgrims didn’t need any help from natives to do anything, let alone survive in a new land by hunting and farming and building shelters, so I believe the Squanto story has a somewhat anti-American agenda behind it or is simply the imagination of someone of very limited intelligence.
Well, 55 degrees and I’ll be working on putting up a new backyard shed today and tomorrow.

The Mayflower passengers arrived in “the wrong place” (it appears that Providence had His hand in that also), unprepared for the situation they would find themselves in.
They were not military men hardened for survival.
They prayed for help. God answered with the last thing they expected. He’s like that.

WOW! I’ve never considered myself remotely of limited intelligence, and I have printed this every Thanksgiving Day and had lovely responses at the way the location was just right, that Squanto would survive all those trips and have learned English to help the Pilgrims in a particularly awful snowy year…So your opinion of the whole thing was surprising. I wrote a huge long comment back to you and decided I’d delete it.
Make sure you don’t peek at the directions on that shed…..You probably don’t need help.

ALL: Are we really suggesting it would have been a weakness for the Pilgrims to ‘NEED” help in a country whose climate and soil and everything else was so different than theirs, in a pursuit they’d not been familiar with…farming, building, etc?
ED…and how were they socialists? Because they worked together for the common good?

Z, Sorry my comment was taken as such a wet blanket. I just can’t and won’t believe the pilgrims were as helpless as the story suggests. There are many examples such as the Vikings arriving and surviving quite well in Greenland on their own way back when before the ice came in and drove them out. Many more examples. If Squanto was there, great, but the pilgrims wouldn’t have needed it.

They’re limited manpower just because of sheer low numbers and a particularly bad winter they knew nothing about…they’re trying to SURVIVE, and they’re supposed to just farm their little bit of land and say “AND YOU CAN’T HAVE ANY!”? “GO GET YOUR OWN?”
Ya, Conservative ‘experts’ can call it the PERILS OF SOCIALISM but I look at it as early days of working together to help the people survive until private lands, etc., could be achieved safely!!!

I’ll always look at it as a miracle that he’d be picked up….survive long ocean trips in those days, learn English!, and then get dropped off at the perfect place.
I don’t look at it as an illegal who somehow got through Trump’s wall and started living on us.
I don’t see it as showing weakness.
I see it as God’s providence.

Ok Z, no argument here. I amazed at what I find out about the goings on in the 11400, 1500, 1600, 1700s and even back to the 1200’s, and mainly thought I’d pass some of that on. Still don’t see people huddled in the snow waiting for someone to come along and save them, but Not telling anyone what to think either.
Yes, I will read the directions for the engineered modular resin based shed, but if I was making it myself out of wood, there’d be no directions and no problems (smiley)

Kid, just takes a google or two to find out how bad that particular winter was and how desperate they were. Big difference between ‘huddled in the snow’ and ‘Gad, we really could use some help; when the heck DO we plant those seeds when the snow’s this deep?” (obviously, I’m no farmer, but neither were they when they came)
ANyway, I’ve always published Squanto’s story on Thanksgiving and it’s been enjoyed.
SO….I think our ethos these days is taking a little from enjoyment of ANYTHING, frankly!!!
No biggie…..I didn’t think you’re trying to convince me. or argue….You know me better than that 🙂

They were living in a commune. That makes them…… socialists.
They were dying because some lollygagged and the hard workers realized their own effort wasn’t rewarding them.
Then Governor Bradford divvied up the commune and made each responsible for their own welfare.
The dawdlers stopped dawdling.

Well, my feeling is, if the Pilgrims could make it safely across the Atlantic and land on foreign soil, they could’ve easily adapted and survived. Consider also how tough those that ventured West to unfamiliar territory in horse-drawn wagons, venturing off into Indian territories and being attacked, without food or water. So Thanksgiving for the Pilgrims with friendly, helpful Indians would’ve been a virtual walk in the park for them.
Oh! I read a “groaner” last night. Do you know why Dancer and Prancer love coffee so much?
Its because they’re Santa’s star bucks!

Ed….thanks…I don’t at all look at sharing like that as SOCIALISM but it gets people hot and bothered, doesn’t it. If they hadn’t shared, I’m guessing they’d not have made it; particularly without Squanto’s help….imagine an Indian back then speaking English.
MAL; I can only go by the facts….I expect many of us know Native Americans also helped cavalries and settlers coming across the plains but that doesn’t seem to sell well, and it wasn’t OFTEN, probably….

As I think about Squanto and his personal misfortune, I recall that his whole tribe died while he was gone. Had he not been tricked, kidnapped and sold into slavery and ransomed by Jesuit priests (those Jesuits, always in tough places it seems), he would have died with his tribe. God allowed these terrible sins of man to be used to glorify Him through the vehicle of yet another imperfect but miraculous man. (Sound familiar?)
Interesting thought, Mal, but I think Squanto was God’s way of reminding them that they could not survive without Him. Half of them did not make it that first winter, in the wrong place at the wrong time of year.

And Ed, it was an even worse case in Jamestown where ‘settlers’ proclaimed a mission of bringing the gospel to the Indians, but brought with them an extraordinary number of assayers of precious metals to accompany the fortune seekers who pined for what the Spanish found in South America. Getting responsibility for your own land came after Squanto’s death, and the J Town governor dealt out harsh medicine to get the lazy to work.

As a blue eyed blanquito married to a Latina it was important I learned to dance to the Latin rhythms. That being said I dance salsa, meringue, bachata, cumbia, mambo, pasa doble but damn I can’t cha-cha supposedly the easiest to learn . And no she doesn’t wear a hat with fruit 🍌 on it.

But the Squanto story is amazing. Miraculous.
The odds are far too fantastic.
Quite similar to the odds of Biden getting more votes than Trump.

Ed… …you win. I disagree but gad, that’s fine. Got to understand what they were going through…..people were good in those days …You didn’t do a better crop than your neighbor and say “Screw you”…you shared. You didn’t come that far to say “Every man on his own” They all put their goods together so all survived. As you know, and all your experts, that did not last long. But it kept them alive.

By the way, Squanto, I believe I recall correctly, was also taken to Spain…then back to England, then back to JUST the spot where he was needed badly to get them through a particularly bad winter……
It’s almost astonishing that he just didn’t stay in England, get left in Spain, didn’t die en route, etc.

Kids have been indoctrinated to hate America. Since they know Nothing about other countries, they have no way to consider the alternatives and weigh the options. We do have to information, so we can concede some of America’s faults but still recognize it as the greatest country for individual liberty and economic opportunity. Completely lost on them.

As we write my wife is speaking with cousins in Venezuela. They are holding out hope of Pennsylvania going fir Trump,; they are holding out hope for Trump to win and help Venezuela. I’m telling my wife to tell them it’s not going to happen. They’e asking if it goes to the Supreme Court? I told them if so they will decide in favor of Biden because if they rule in favor of Trump the cities will burn to the ground. The communist take over is almost complete. Unfortunately there is no hope for help for Venezuela coming from the US.

Z, Squanto was purchased off the slave block in that notorious slave market in SE Spain, in Malaga, by a religious order who sought to purchase such unfortunates to free them. In fact, my great great + grandmother was such a person (The slave market in Spain was gone by then; she was purchased in North Africa.)
