Anyone who willingly commits murder, arson resulting in death, terrorism, rape, kidnapping for ransom (including identity theft & hacking) automatically forfeits ALL his rights, both civil and human.
Not only do I recommend capital punishment, but suggest that survivors or NOKs of victims have first priority in meting out punishment commensurate with the nature of the crime and their own beliefs. The state, however, should not consider leniency, even if the victim/NOK does.

Its what happens when you find yourself a Russian girl friend…..He had a position as a WH guard as I understand it…. a good bargaining chip for Putin..He should have stayed home. Same with the kid that got in trouble in North Korea… just stay out of these dictator’s hell holes.

This is the first I’ve heard of this case. I don’t know the Marine, and have no insight into what he did, or why, or under what circumstances. Ergo, I have no opinion. What I do have, though, is a good recall of past examples where Americans found themselves in legal jeopardy in a foreign country.
One may recall Michael Fay. While living in Singapore with his mother and step-father, Singapore law officials arrested Fay and charged him with vandalism and stealing. In accordance with Singapore’s custom, this miscreant went to court, was found guilty, and ordered “caned.” Caning isn’t pleasant, but it isn’t as bad as horsewhipping. But the American media made this event into a circus. Despite the media event, most Americans believed that Fay deserved his sentence … six whacks.
But Bill Clinton sought to intervene and managed to get the number of strokes reduced from six to four. Whoopsie-doo.
After Singapore deported Fay, he returned to the United States to live with his biological father in Florida. Within a few months, Fay found himself again in trouble with the law, in Florida. While sniffing butane, he set himself on fire. In 1996, Fay was arrested for reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident he caused, drinking while driving. In 1998, Florida police arrested Fay for possession of drugs and paraphernalia.
Obviously, the case involving the Marine, who assaulted police, is not the same sort of issue as Mr. Fay. But it is sufficiently similar to cause me to conclude that if this Marine did the crime, then he should do the time … in the place where the crime was committed. I realize Z won’t agree with this opinion, of course, but then I am a neanderthal who thinks Bergdahl should have been left in the hands of the Taliban, who he voluntarily joined after deserting his post while serving in combat. Let’s stop making excuses for these vermin; let’s hold them responsible for their criminal behavior.

It does seem extreme to throw someone in prison for more than 2 years for getting drunk…but what kind of JERK represents America like that?

I DO believe anyone who does crimes should be held responsible…..and I think throwing someone into prison for, so far, two years for getting drunk is extreme, and I’d want him home if I was his parent, but I do NOT think we should trade him for Russian criminals in our jails.

Here’s the extremely literate dope at FOX’s banner “ME AND BIDEN Spoke the “same language”…(ME AND BIDEN?…gad)… in the next breath “..it’s hard to say if US relations will improve”…..hey, i thought you speak the same language? It’s not RUSSIAN, we know Joe can barely speak ENglish.
As Pompeo just said on FOX, Putin is great at obfuscation and it was easy without an American president saying “That’s not what happened..” etc….
Putin doesn’t want BLM in HIS country, he says!
POMPEO is right …he’s saying how Putin tried to put America and Russia on the same page…like one isn’t better than the other…..Putin OFTEN responded as if saying “Look, we’re just another great country and I just don’t understand why we’re not trusted”..Pompeo is emphatic about the ridiculousness of that……I don’t believe Putin responded to a Canadian woman who lives in Moscow when she asked why young people can’t protest in Russia. At least I didn’t hear that part of his answer…did anybody here?
Fascinating that a Black woman who represented the WSJ spoke Russian…pretty cool there!
And the Bloomberg guy questioned in Russian, too…..

How do we know what’s true? Would a power play guy hang on to a bargaining chip? Yup. Would he make something up for a strategical advantage? Yup. Would a drunk young man resist arrest?

In fact, a good idea would be when we go for a passport, we should be warned we will be on our own if we get into trouble, like drugs, theft. espionage., etc.; however, if we are innocently targeted as a political pawn for doing nothing wrong, we will get protection.

I never knew how we could get around that; I LOVE our freedoms, obviously..but there have been so many instances that’s come to my mind; so many instances which proved it to me….

They used to warn ’em about Turkey, Mal, and it’s not a bad idea. I can’t remember if that Marine served in the ME, but they usually warn you about stuff in that neck of the woods. After that, how naive? It’s not so much our freedoms as our ignorance about them, about human nature in general, about the history of the world. You see it and at some level assume it’s always been like this, everywhere.

I’m sure the military warn their own when on foreign soil, but I was referring to private citizens. The last time I got a passport was in 1995 and they didn’t at that time that I can remember.

Military, especially, are well informed about country habits/traditions,s and far more importantly, how to BEHAVE.
I’d not think a young man in Moscow, however, would give it much thought since it’s not a ME country but more modern, all the young people around him are throwing back vodkas and you might forget where you are.
In Germany, if you give someone the OK with your fingers making a circle, you have called them an A**hole! I always had to remember that!! Obviously, there are FAR more important things than that but if a military guy did that to a German military guy, he could have trouble !!!!
