This story is stunning; take a look:

A taser is meant to incapacitate, not maim or murder.   Some sites on tasers say it is to “Defend your family without the consequences of taking a life.”     SO THIS STORY really really threw me:

Here is a paragraph from the link giving the details:

“Blasingame, 69, was panhandling near a freeway when he attempted to run away during the July 10, 2018, encounter with police officers. An officer said he tasered Blasingame because he thought he was going to run into traffic. The shock caused Blasingame to fall and seriously injure himself. He became unconscious and was bleeding profusely from his head while the officer called for medical assistance.”

This man is set to win a FORTY MILLION DOLLAR LAWSUIT.    I pity him so so much….he has a REALLY terrible injury and can basically move nothing;  completely paralyzed for life.  I think he should not have run from the police, I think a cop might want to tase someone running into traffics, and it can’t be clearer this was not mean to hurt him, just stop him.   A terrible injury resulted in this man falling as he was hit by the taser while he ran from the police.  But check this out!:

“A jury initially awarded Jerry Blasingame $100 million after he was Tasered and left paralyzed. A federal judge reduced the amount, meaning Blasingame could receive at least a $40 million payout, Fox Atlanta reported.

“This would put a substantial dent in the amount of services that we would be able to provide to citizens across the board,” City Councilman Michael Bond told the news outlet. ”    He almost got ONE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS….the jury felt he should have.

Sad that the whole city will suffer because of this…that’s a ton of dough.     I’m not sure what I’d award the  69 year old homeless, now paralyzed, man.   Probably enough to support him well, with all he needs, till his demise.   Not $100 million or $40 million.  Will tasers now be taken off the ways cops can stop people without shooting them?  Will guns be next, anyway, with the way things are going in America’s treatment of crime?

I think that the jury system is out of control. We don’t know what his preexisting conditions were. For him to be tasered and end up like this leaves a lot of the story unanswered. The comment that this “award” will impact the budget of the police is the same that has happened to the medical communities.
Any baby that is born less than perfect from a drug addicted inner city mother winds up with a medical settlement.. fearful of facing a jury of her peers. We pay in the end for the outrageous malpractice insurance premiums. OB’s pay more than 300k last I knew a few years ago

Twelve homeless people on the jury?

It’s a win-win-win-win. Lawyer makes a boatload of money, Judge too probly, City and taxpayers get their wallets lightened.

Add the Defense team for the city was part of the Progressive ilk and probably made a half hearted defense.

  5. Mustang says:

    What do you think?

    a) That the police were hassling homeless people in Atlanta.
    b) Mr. Blasingame reacted as most homeless people do
    c) Jon Grubbs used excessive force and was responsible for Blasingame’s injury
    d) The award of $100 million more reflects what the jury thinks of the Atlanta police than it does the worth of Blasingame’s injuries
    e) The judge’s award of $40 million reflects his politics and could be “as racially” motivated
    f) Whether $100 million or $40 million, Atlanta can afford to pay because those costs will be passed along to tourists and homeowners. No big deal, dude.

BUNKERVILLE…he apparently fell but, to me, that’s a lot of injury for a fall……….but each time it’s mentioned in the linked article, it’s “he fell and badly injured himself”…and yes, the defense team sure didn’t do a conscientious job. What do they care?
How a druggy mother can get a settlement for the damage she caused her child in utero is beyond me. Disgusting.

PETER! You’d THINK! Has to be!!

MUSTANG: Except that nobody used excessive force to keep a guy from running into a street and being hit by a car, or causing people IN their cars to be hurt in trying to avoid hitting him…..If the cop had shot him, I’d say that was WAY excessive!

I believe the judge is NUTS.

Z.. its cheaper to give a 100K to the Mother than to take a chance on a million or more jury award,, then add the cost of a trial.. at the least 100K for the lawyers and expert witnesses.

  8. geeez2014 says:

BUNKERVILLE…meaning we have come to the point we’ll give in to anything rather than the right thing. You’re right, I think that happens a LOT….cheaper to just pay off and hope that’s the end of it.
Nobody but the mother did anything wrong, from the scenario you described, right? Still, whether she caused it or not, the baby’s going to need help. I believe they should take the baby until a mother can prove herself clean again….

Next time, best let him run into oncoming traffic…

FJ….Am trying not to agree with your point!!

One head hit on the pavement and the most healthy, existing condition free person can be killed or paralyzed for life. You do not have to be the likely substance disabled person this man was. (An elderly neighbor slipped on her kitchen floor and hit her head. 30 days in UCLA intensive care, became a bare shell of herself and died a few months later.)

It’s such a split second decision. I can see the other headline “Cop Chases Homeless Man Into Traffic, Dies in Collision with Car.” I think I would let him run unless I had seen weapons on him. BUT you can’t just ignore panhandling. You get more of it. Many of these are not “innocents” but people who have voluntarily screwed up their lives and are committing other crimes in addition to panhandling. (Why did he run by the way?) This crime has all sorts of collateral damage. I was pushed into an accident by such a person who ran into the street in front of my car, and it cost me a lot out of pocket! I wish a cop had been there stopping him.

$40M? Are you Kidding Me? The base price for a nursing home is $7-12k a month with extra care pushing that into the low 6 figures a year at the highest. This man will have a harder time doing what, say, Joni Erickson did in learning to live with no body control below the neck and will need more services. It is a very sad case. I prayed for him when I read the story. Hopefully, he’ll have a come-to-Jesus moment for all this disaster.

How about the black girl who got $370,000 for being tasered as she ran out of a store with some stuff she shoplifted…..
    What was the point?

If you’re looking for any sanity or justice in America, the last place to look is in the justice system. I know of stories of child custody cases as examples where young child left with the worst of the worst and grandparents/whatever relatives spending way too much and not getting anything done. Lawyers, judges raking in the money.Feeding frenzy. Too many examples to even hint at. If justice happens in America today, it is by accident.

I pray I never have to come in contact with the ‘justice’ system.

BAYSIDER….the taser was meant to stop him from killing himself and/or causing drivers to die trying to keep from hitting him. Tasers almost never kill; I believe it was the right thing to do; a humane thing to do.

But, yes…the cop couldn’t know he’d fall and hit his head that hard but you certainly don’t want to mess with a very hard head hit, do you? The picture in the linked article is dreadful…he was almost amazingly hurt for ‘just’ a fall….I don’t mean in his head but outside.

$40 million………..utterly ridiculous!! And the jury wanted him to have ONE HUNDRED MILL!!

KID…. Right! I have shared here some years back, friends of mine had a brother and sis-in-law go to prison…they had two small children …so my friends sped downtown to get the children, their niece and nephew. The courts would NOT give them to them…….they’d have taken NO MONEY from the state …so the court gives them to a foster home we PAY and the foster home experiences scarred those children for life!! RIDICULOUS CRAP, isn’t it.

And now, MAL, our MORONIC president uses the term ARMAGEDDON as if it’s no big deal.

These are VERY scary times with HIM in charge talking about nukes…with a crazed Putin acting out, and N Korea pushing Japan around.

My GOD, what would possess a demented president from talking nuclear holocaust like that?

“Lunchpail Joe” – a man of the people don’t ya know. From Scranton, Penn, the home of the workin’ man.

I about fainted at Armageddon. Really – if few people today know who Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn is, how many know that Armageddon is?

  21. geeez2014 says:

BAYSIDER…ahh…thanks!!! Yes, he’s also Puerto Rican, dontchaknow 🙂

Gad, I hadn’t thought there are people who don’t know what Armageddon is…..I hope Russia doesn’t 🙂

THis man is dangerous beyond belief….and what an easy presidency! Stay quiet, hide, spend tons of money for votes, lie constantly, read every word you are forced to finally say…………..what a SNAP. Meanwhile, our country is at stake because of him 😦
