“Iran or Persia?” it does matter

I went to the Christian High School I’m associated with yesterday morning to hear a young American with Iranian roots speak.   I’d sub’d a week or two ago and he told me he was going to talk about the Shah being deposed so I promised I’d come listen.   Well, he did cover that, but what seemed to be his (albeit weak and rather dull) premise surprised me:   “Iranians keep their culture when they come to live in America.” “Wait, ” I thought, “isn’t it better to be Americans and keep your culture in your home?”  As an Armenian whose family has strong cultural traditions we keep in our home out of respect for the country which embraced us 100 years ago, I know from whence I speak.  Still, I understand that he’s proud of his family’s homeland and wants to tell us what’s on his mind.  SO I listened.

I started to feel like he was giving the class an earful on why they should actually like Persians in spite of what they’re hearing on TV.  He inasmuch said so, and that rather touched my heart.   I  believe that if that wasn’t his conscious intention, it was certainly there.   He is a muslim, but not at all a practicing muslim.  And he’s a good kid.  And, let’s face it, we don’t hear many positives on Iran these days.

My post yesterday, you’ll remember, was about bias in our schools and I’d linked to an education group that’s trying to stop teachers from training at White Privilege lectures (that’d be ANTI White Priv., of course!) and bringing those teachings into our classrooms. So THIS PART STUNNED ME:

In Iran, teachers are being replaced by teachers who are trained to talk about hate for America and the benefits of hard line Islam.   The young student today showed a video about one young woman, Marina Nemat, who said that she had to raise her hand in a calculus class  to ask the teacher to please only just teach calculus, (to not indoctrinate)!”   She has some guts.  This is a woman who was taken into custody and had the soles of her feet beaten with piping, was raped, and had solitary confinement until they finally released her.  What’s the difference between her calculus story and White Privilege foolishness?

My young friend very hurriedly passed over nukes and sanctions of today, stressing how the sanctions are hurting Iranians and how some particular phone call between Obama and the Iranian prime minister was “the most important phone call in a very long time!”  It was clear he’d rather not talk about this situation which has brought Iranian/American relations even more into the limelight.

He did not mention the word MUSLIM once, to the best of my recollection, and I wish the students had asked questions and a little more reality had been thrown into the mix.  He wasn’t anti-America, he is definitely not that,  and he’s certainly no fan of the Ayatollahs…he’s just an 18 year old kid who sounds like he’d want America to not feel his ancestral country is so despicable…..that we could stop being The Great Satans to each other, Iran and America.

He credits Social Media with informing a lot of Iranians the truth.  Let’s hope our social media gets stronger in that direction and starts informing kids who are so indoctrinated that they’ve been drinking Kool Aid from their professors.

Finally, the instructor, a very dear friend of mind, asked “Is there a distinction in your mind between being called PERSIAN or IRANIAN?”  The boy said no, that’s totally interchangeable….except it isn’t.  I have heard Persians say “When you hear ‘I am Iranian,’ they’re usually a hard liner.”   I don’t think this kid knows that but I believe that’s correct. And I know he’s no hard liner.   And, though I only hit on it a bit above, he did a lot of criticizing the Islamist regime in Iran, that’s for sure.

So, there he was, a happy American kid whose father’s done very well here…..but proud of his ancestry.  Who isn’t?  And that’s not easy for him when we see so much Anti Iranian talk here; I get that.   I so wished the kids in the class had questioned him like they usually do but I think the premise wasn’t provocative or definitive enough, and they just didn’t care.

Or rather, I’m hoping they just didn’t AGREE.

I left, saying to him “I wish we had hours to talk about this…………”

Let’s talk here…….

Z, I feel like you could swap “Iran” for “U.S.” and swap “teachers” for “military leaders” in that sentence. As for the young man, aren’t those not actively beheading considered “non practicing?”

“Iran” comes from Aryan, which means “noble.” The Persians regarded themselves as a noble people, hence Iranian. I suspect your young friend misses the point, which is easy for a teenager. The problem isn’t Persians, or Iranians, Aryans, or Indo-Iranians: the problem is Islam.

And Thank YOU….I forgot to mention I know a lovely Persian convert to Christianity whose husband was Republican till now…he feels the Republicans now want war with Iran and he told her he’s on Obama’s side now. I was very sad to hear this; these people are NOT muslims, and NOT liberal in any way.

Mustang, that’s exactly right; As I said above, he never mentioned the word MUSLIM. And I think that’s the whole crux of the thing…..as you know, it’s only since civilized Iran (and it was very beautiful and very civilized before the Shah’s ouster) became islamIST that all this has started up, their country is dark and poorer for it….Scary to understand it was propaganda that got and kept the Ayatollah in power. And these were NO DUMMIES, these people of Iran.

jerry, after I wrote this, I spoke to someone last night who said when this kid first came to our school, he wore one of the ‘beanies’….but stopped. He’s also questioned me extensively in private moments about Jesus, etc. I think he’s lost confidence in islam, personally.

  8. Mustang stated and AOW agreed Islam is the problem. I also agree. Those Muslims who don’t agree with the Jihad then need to ask themselves why they should continue to embrace such a belief if it can be interpreted in such a sick and violent way. No other religion has that problem. As we know, many Muslims have become Christians, but even if one doesn’t, they can be an agnostic if they choose, but stop being a Muslim because that becomes hard to justify.

The Left so hates royalty, riches, dignity…..it wouldn’t occur to them to actually condemn Islamists. They’ll give lip service against terrorism (IF they’ll say that word) but that’s just because somewhere, deep inside, there’s that decent streak in all of us which knows you don’t celebrate murder….but I’d bet a lot of money that a LOT of lefties cringe when they see the royals in Persia. But is Zuhdi Jasser bad? Are there peaceful muslims wishing this terrorism thing would just go away? you bet. They NEED to start reading the WHOLE KORAN and LEAVING ISLAM. I know thousands are coming to Christianity; I know this for a fact. That’s our only hope.

I feel very strongly there are a larger number than we want to believe that are just waiting in the wings to make the transition. Arabs are different thinking people, and while I know its not fair to paint them all with the same brush, how can we know which ones are good? The risk is so huge because of what they are capable of doing to their fellow man due to their sick beliefs.

Back to your student. We are not ‘making’ Americans any more. Even people who appreciate being here. A long time ago I posted about Peggy Noonan talking about her grandparents who came from Ireland. In their treasure box she found articles and things of interest about Ireland in their early years here. Gradually, that shifted, and the mementos were about America. It showed the process of transition to a new identity.

I did not see that link to PEG yesterday until you mentioned it again today. THAT is what is wrong. You want the culture to bend to become like you. Well, we’re very elastic and have had a LOT of adaptation here as each wave was brought into the fold of being American. But NEVER the reverse. And now we’re afraid to mention peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in school for fear of not connecting to a foreign student who eats burritos? Honestly, if you don’t LIKE the culture, politics, & religion here and aren’t prepared to adapt, DON’T COME. Yeah, they came for the money. But that money came from our culture, politics and religion. Not yours, or your country wouldn’t be a place you wanted to leave.

I hope your student comes to see this: the security and wealth generation of this country is tied to its roots, not from oil that was magically tapped out of the ground by someone other than you. But he will get any whiff of sense knocked out of him in college.

Iran is an extremely sad scenario – a beautiful country, full of smart people, resources and a once functional culture RUINED by the Islamists.

I think all the comments here are good ones and I also think it’s good to remember that, for example, a young man who comes from a wealthy family whose family’s made even more money (owning several franchising of a fast food place you all know) since coming here (and even if he were poor, I suppose), is tied to his ancestral home. That’s a good thing; I feel close to the Armenian culture; great (GREAT) food, amazing musicians/composers, not-so-hot art (but PLENTY of it), highly intelligent, etc etc…….I’m proud of all that. This kid’s family does what my family has always done; they keep the culture at home. I regretted his (also weak and uninteresting) premise that “Iranians keep their culture in America” because it sounded like “OVER America’s” (particularly when he gave us a long list of Iranians who’ve contributed (in VERY big ways, by the way, to American business, science, etc.,). I also had an eye opening moment when I looked at this very long sheet (front and back, single spaced) list of bigshot Persians in America, the headline I finally read said “THINGS YOU MAY KNOW OR USE”. “Or USE?” I thought. It was then I knew he hadn’t compiled this list and that whoever had did have other intentions for it. “AND USE for WHAT?” 🙂

All that to say that I know what it is to be proud of your ancestral culture (which is pretty recent, compared to lots of immigrant families here) and, at his age(teen), he’s sticking up for his people even while I know for a fact he loves America. We all should get that….it’s natural. How can he not feel defensive?

By the way, a lot of Persians sank a LOT of money INTO America when they came…huge investments, etc. That, I know for sure.

Kid, I TOTALLY see your point and as I said in my comment above this, I am counting on more and more muslims actually reading their korans for the first time and seeing the evil in it…Most are just peaceful folks who go about their islam like most christians go about their christianity or like jews who tell me “I’m only a cultural jew” (no strong faith, just Rosh Hoshanna and Hannukah)… These muslims need to WAKE UP and realize that it’s christians and jews who are NOT killing anybody.,,,THEIR strong adherents ARE

How tied should we be to our ‘old country?’

In 2-3 generations Italians, e.g., had ties to their culture that were limited to visiting cousins in the ‘old country’ and food and special events. By then their thinking had been blended into being an American. And, yes, pride in what others from their country did here. That’s how it SHOULD be. We make reasonable adaptations. It’s why America works better in a way no other country does. Rome also was surprisingly good at this – just in a different way.

But as Victor Davis Hanson has pointed out, there is a vested ‘industry’ in ethnic studies (like Chicano studies) that would collapse if we controlled the border and stopped the flow of new candidates who bring nostalgia for ‘home’ ( or, worse, Islam). We’re talking more than illegals here, of course.

His point is the termites that are eating out our substance and crippling our future depend on perpetuating nostalgia for something other than America and self-identity as something other than American, or they’d have to go find an honest job. Your young student will run into enough of these weasels to turn his head. And that keeps them un-gainfully employed.

Granted, my ‘nostalgia’ is firmly planted here, as my ancestors came in the 1660’s, 1770’s, and 1880’s. They learned English and truncated their foreign names. Good! Some started richer; others as virtual slaves with a price tag on their heads. In 2-3 generations that doesn’t matter either. Trust me. Or I’d be living on a grand estate in the Carolinas.

I’ve had many friendships among people from all over the globe, like learning about their background, culture, food and why they left to come here. I LOVE that. You remember my Iranian colleague I told you about the other day. He LOVES this country and knows how valuable and special our freedoms are. I wonder about his children, though.

My Dutch great-grandfather worked as a … are you ready for it? … a GARDENER. He didn’t speak a word of English. Gee, does that sound familiar? So he went to the school board, demanded an interpreter and to have his kids taught in Dutch, and ….. Oooh, don’t think so? Of course not! He bought himself a King James English (no less!) Bible and read it side by side with his familiar Dutch Bible to learn vocabulary. When his [rich, Republican] employer learned that, he invited GGP into his study after work and tutored him in English, then opened his library to him. GGP had young family, but somehow managed to put a priority on learning to move into the culture while working his butt off. And he signed an oath of citizenship pledging allegiance to the U.S. and NO OTHER SOVEREIGN (his being specifically named in the document).

We have PLENTY of immigrants here that are willing to work their butts off (despite what that a**hole at PEG says about work attitudes), but they are being trapped by the termites in academe who are unraveling the seams of our garment of state faster than we can sew it back up. Along with the loose-brained ‘dual citizenship’ advocates, they plant a false nostalgia for the broken systems immigrants got away from and whatever Marxism-tainted scenarios ‘the left’ chooses to add in — not for the cousins and food ‘back home.’ This becomes an impassable barrier to entry into the American ‘way.’ Yay! Mission accomplished for them.

If the modern-day Balkanizers held sway then as today, I’d be ordering a ballot in Dutch … or, worse, Welsh!! The problem is not what immigrants ‘do’ to America, but what we are doing to our immigrants – same thing as our children.

“How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries, improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live.

A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement, the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.

Individual Muslims may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome.”

Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a moderate Muslim reformer, came to America from Somalia. She recently warned in an op-ed in Time Magazine that she worries about the attitudes of the majority of Muslim immigrants coming to the United States, typically from the three countries of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Iraq.

Ali writes that many “people in these countries hold views that most Americans would regard as extreme.”

For example, she notes that a number of Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and Iraqis believe conversion away from Islam should be punished by death.

“More than 80 percent of Pakistanis and two thirds of Bangladeshis and Iraqis regard sharia law as the revealed word of God. Only tiny fractions would be comfortable if their daughters married Christians,” she warns. “Only a minority regards honor killings of women as never justified.”

She also notes that roughly 25 percent of Bangladeshis believe suicide bombings defending Islam are justified.

“People with views such as these pose a threat to us all, not because those who hold them will all turn to terrorism. Most will not. But such attitudes imply a readiness to turn a blind eye to the use of violence and intimidation tactics against, say, apostates and dissidents – and a clear aversion to the hard-won achievements of Western feminists and campaigners for minority rights,” wrote Hirsi Ali.

In addition to the immigration from the African Continent, the nation’s student visas program also contributes to the growing number of Islamic immigrants. “Nearly 81,000 subjects of the Saudi kingdom are studying in the U.S. this school year, up from about 5,000 in 2000-01,” the Wall Street Journal reported.

Now we’re getting some immigrants who far from wanting to pull the bandwagon, just want to sit in the bandwagon-and that’s a big change-not to mention people who actually want to do harm to the country. Look if our government can monitor our every phone call and our every email and our every motion, you can be very sure they have the technology to spot every single person coming across the border. The problem is they don’t want to.
