Looking at the numbers, one would think that America is in deep economic straits. Maybe not …
• Of poor families, 43% own their own homes
• 80% of poor households have air conditioning (up from 36% in 1970)
• The average “poor American” has more living space than the average person living in Paris, London, Vienna, and Athens
• 75% of poor households own an automobile, 31% of the poor own two cars
• 62% of poor households have cable or satellite TV
• The average consumption of protein, vitamins, and minerals is the same for the poor as it is for the middle class, and well above recommended norms.
• 33% of poor households have both cellular and landline telephone systems; one-third have answering machines.
BTW, I found this information staggering: according to the Public Policy Institute of California, 40% of Californians are living at or near the national poverty line and, were it not for the massive amounts of money spent on welfare programs in California, this number would be much higher. Amazing …

I suppose my point was that most of us assume that simply because someone tells us there is a poverty problem in America, it must be so. I am certain there is such a problem, but I do not think it’s at the level that the government wants us to believe. Who among us has a greater interest in maintaining this false perception? My answer is that it must be the corrupt politician (Maxine Waters comes to mind) who gains reelection by bribing the poor with “free stuff.”

Generally speaking, our American “poor” somehow find the wherewithal to maintain items of extravagant luxury, as compared to the truly poor across the span of the globe. Life choices. Don’t pursue the latest smartphones, gaming systems and gorge on fast food, and still expect to receive subsidization by the State. Suck it up, buttercup.

Yes, a lot of people would love to be poor in America. Many have poured across the border now for decades, and if we didn’t have oceans seperating us from the rest.. Still democrats do maintain the lower standard of living areas in America.

I’m not sure I can take all this wisdom in at one time. As a note, Atlanta has not had a republican mayor as long as I have lived here (30 years), and more. Of course the City of Atlanta is surrounded by well to do suburbs, and that’s where the real population lives. Atlanta proper is improving, and that’s a good thing.

Mustang and others; yes, the POOR here is VERY VERY different than the POOR around the world. Today I saw a man so poverty stricken-looking, on his cell phone. Where’s he get the bill? His home? He looked homeless…is it a pay-as-you-go like mine? Is it an Obama phone and does our government just keep paying HUUUGE Phone bills for homeless…..the hope of Obama was supposedly that the poor would have a way to be contacted or to contact if they hear of a job. Think that’s happened even ONCE? Probably not. But we keep paaaaying!
RE Maxine Waters, she lives in a 4 million dollar house….last night on TV< Tucker Carlson asked how she got SO RICH…even Democrat watch dogs list her as one of THE most corrupt politician in America today. I WISH someone would do a real 'expose' (accent on the last e!)
And, of course, whether we believe there's substantial poverty here in America or not (and don't let's kid ourselves, it exists BIG time), the point is the leaders of the hardest hit poverty areas…LIBERALS.

Kid, those lyrics are spot on….the 'sale of pills' hit me hard because I've known 3 guys since they were about 10…all succeeded well in life…have great jobs, two have nice families…one's a millionaire in the Bay Area up North…now one is in AA and finally clean, he flew up to S.F. to get that millionaire friend to AA as he'd like to finally stop an addiction to pills, and the 3rd boy (all raised by good loving families, private Catholic schools, etc.) was so strung out he almost lost his whole family, went into rehab, and is now running a rehab place here in Venice. ALL THREE were addicts. Our kids are SO LOST today…..we've taken everything of true merit away and replaced it with their sense that things will never be good here ..and they might not be. never again.
Bob, I think a lot of cities ARE improving…I know parts of LA which were rough are getting better..'gentrification' some of us call it. Bringing in good businesses…cafes, shops, etc….
And ya, this is a LOT to take in and I probably should have published it 'part by part'! I did think of that!

The Problem (Part II Poorest Cities/How did it happen?) is that “outsourcing” happened. Thanks to minimum wage laws (yes Democrats LOVE them), their jobs got shipped to the third world. And absent tariffs and Trump, they AIN’T coming back!

I’ve often said here, in my always-more-simplistic manner is “capitalism cannot work without kindness and goodness…because those who hire and aren’t FAIR will be overcome and lose…thusly, we all lose.” I don’t suppose that at all dovetails your point, but…it’s my point.

As the traditional “bourgeois middle class” gets replaced by a salaried “proletarian middle class”, the former’s “wisdom of the crowd” get replaced by a “wisdom of the managing elite few”. Elites whose relationship to the salaries they “earn” is purely arbitrary (for it is not their “wisdom” that justify their earnings, as was formerly the case with the bourgeois capitalists).
A bourgeois capitalist pays directly for every mistake he makes (and therefore LEARNS from them). This is not true for a salaried proletarian capitalist. The former learns and becomes “wise” The latter does NOT. One is a doctor for free men, the other a doctor for slaves. (Plato – “Laws” )

( and the MG’s ) Washington for such parasites like Waters who sustain their living through racial lies and fraudulent claims and a total immersion of intimidation. At least CI and Mustang opened the door and alluded to the real 800 pound gorilla’s in the room. I was watching an episode of Blue Bloods recently where they had a 16 yo black female in custody for robbery …any way the detectives asked her what she wanted to do wth her life? Her response was..”Get pregnant and go on welfare”. TV or not, don’t tell me that it’s not a part of the sub cultures that we’ve been constantly annoyed by while supporting them for the last 60 years now.

Nothing is going to help us restore capitalism on to its historic foundations until the legal system is restructured so that it stops favoring corporations OVER people. People cannot compete with “deathless gods” who pay less taxes than they must pay.

No disagreement whatsoever. This reminds me of circa 1968 when my cousin was working in pest control. His company had a contract with the Franklin County (Columbus OH) Housing Authority and that amounted to exterminating Public Housing of burgeoning cockroach infestations. He invited me to accompany him for a day. WOW as we went from place to place, spraying while many of the residents were passed-out or having uninterrupted sex there was one common denominator they all had (drum roll) COLORED TV! This was 1968. How many of us had that then? I know that I sure didn’t. This whole thing was quite an eye opener about so-called “poverty”.

@ Ed In terms of Fourth Wave, some have followed in Toffler’s footsteps and talked about a greater integration of business and society and more responsible social and environmental roles for the former in general. Others have envisioned such things as biotechnology and nanotechnology. But nothing significant has happened in those respects, at least not on the scale required to produce transformative change.
For his part, Mark C. Henderson sees the Fourth Wave as an environmental revolution, as The 21st Century Environmental Revolution.
I don’t recall any “environmental” enphasis in Toffler’s work, but I could be wrong, too.

Over half of the so called “poor” don’t live in cities last time I checked. A lot of the so called freebies are not available to them. You want to see real poor I will take you to a couple of places in Appalachia. Much of what Mustang lists as assets don’t exist for them.

I’ve never been to Appalachia, but on occasion we’ve seen films about that section of the country, Bunkerville. It’s hard to imagine people still living like that today in the U.S.

Mal & Bunk…believe me there’s people out there who could have been extra’s in casting the movie Deliverance. We landed a Lear 55 once in some small out if the way air field and West Virginia town. For some unknown to us reason… the runway was a bit over 6000 ft long…just legally enough for us to land and and then takeoff again. It was at a fairly high altitude too which is always a consideration. Anyway, we picking up 4 guys who definitely weren’t local residents.
It looked like the whole damn town came out for this Friday nite all dressed up in their best bib overalls….the women in long “frontier” like dresses, the kids, shy and quiet and well mannered. The men folk all sat in the benches on the FBO’s office veranda. And the women sat near by among themselves all giggling and stuff. There had to be 50 people or more that showed up, looking at the plane, pointing at it…and it seemed that in general, were just in awe of the thing! I swear it looked like a scene out of the depression of 1929 or “Of Mice and Men” You could sense the poverty but you could see the pride too. They didn’t want anything. Nor did I think they’d ever ask for anything either.. Given the way they looked, like people of another time and era.
There wasn’t any jet fuel available so it’s safe to assume that they don’t get much jet traffic. I felt bad for the kids when I told them they could get on the plane, sit in the pilots seats and ask if they wanted a soda or a candy bar. They, all 5 or so, took the goodies. But one of the fathers came up and handed the stuff back to me…said thank you but the kids weren’t allowed candy. ( Actually he looked very pissed off like he wanted to say….”we don’t need nuthin from you so git ) One of the mothers came out and thanked us though. I don’t know …but it looked like we made their day or a Friday nite treat at least. Wondered if they had heat or electricity never mind a 40″ Samsung or an iPhone or an Internet feed. These people were poverty. And probably worked their butts off on farms, or laborers or coal mining. What do they say? Salt of the earth types?

Imp and Mal….. I was born and raised in a similar location. My family much better off, but it didn’t take much to make that claim. They won’t ask for help nor take it. Hunting, Fishing, Firewood to keep warm..that is how life rolled. Lest we forget them.
