MLK Jr DAY….but….really?

I’m a BIG old movie fan….black and white…Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Irene Dunne….Cary Grant, Edward G Robinson, etc…..BRING ‘EM ON!   I own a lot of them on DVD, but I certainly don’t own them all, and I like to watch TCM, Turner Classic Movies.

The trouble is that even that channel is very biased to the Left.

When they show a war movie from 1942 that makes you feel good about America and our soldiers, the host or hostess says, after the film, how that was a PROPAGANDA FILM….things like that happen all the time.  Yesterday, I saw a short interview with Pat O’Brien’s daughter…she said how Pat picked Ronald Reagan to play the Gipper….”later, Reagan went into politics……(she looks smug and sour)…and ’nuff said about THAT.”

Yesterday afternoon I took a peek at the TCM film lineup for today, *Martin Luther King Jr’s Day………..ALL BLACK FILMS.  Cabin in the Sky, Shaft, etc.   Now, I could be wrong, but shouldn’t a movie channel as liberal and enlightened enough to think things like heroic American war films are silly propaganda and Reagan’s politics are beneath them show films with Black Americans in them on a less obvious basis?  Like a couple a week?   No, they are showing them on MLK, Jr. Day!

If you ask me, THAT’s racism.  And that annoys me.

Have a good day……..
Z  (*please let’s not argue MLK, Jr. here today…that’s not what this is about.  Thanks)

  1. One must assume they chose the best “black” movies to showcase.
Perhaps they could have chosen the best movies about the civil rights effort of MLK’s time.
An effort that included many whites who gave up their “privilege” to fight the battle against the Democrat machine that was oppressing the blacks.

Z, you are absolutely right in pointing out their racism. However, the left never has shown any self awareness so I’m sure they think they are just being righteous. It’s like they are saying, “We aren’t racist. We have black film friends”.

BTW, my wife Tina is always watching the old movies on Turner (or I Love Lucy re-runs on Hallmark when she is not watching EWTN). I just asked her if she noticed their left bias and she says she never watches the hosts. There is your answer!

The guy that used to host TCM that just passed away recently? He did a great total non-political job of hosting. He only talked about the trivia about the film and the actors.

Otherwise, the more stupid they are the more they think they should be controlling your thoughts. Morning Joe for example – mind of a two year old. I don’t watch of course I just see the blurbs that make it past my filters.

  4. Gad! Why does TCM have to “politicize” those old movies you mentioned?

The Left never quits — and that’s why the Left continues to gain ground.

Maybe we should revisit what the word “racist” means.

Ed, best or not, it just reeks of silly pandering to race.

Kid, yes, the other guy who died did a great job. Mankiewicz (sp?) now is a bleeding heart lib who puts liberalness into EVERYTHING..

Jerry, the hosts only introduce the films, so I’m not sure anybody ‘watches’ them but maybe I’m just more sensitive to liberal crap? I envy her!

AOW…it’s so disheartening to have just watched a FABULOUS American WWII film, feel so good about the country, and have them say “that was a propaganda film from 1942…” !!!

    Cube….it’s being used too much.
I mean, it’s one thing to show all films about the founding fathers on President’s Day….but to show all Black films on MLK Jr day and barely ever show them otherwise? Silly and…maybe not racist, but pandering…..If I were Black, I’d sure see that. “why not show Black films more?” There aren’t THAT many of all Black casts, and, frankly, many aren’t very good (I watched Anna Lucasta the other day, all Black cast, and I rather liked it, but it wasn’t very well done)

We like TCM also, Z. However, I would like to point out the films during WWll did have propaganda messages, not against the war but in patriotic support. “Remember Pearl Harbor” was one such slogan that was posted everywhere. The war films almost always had messages of support as a constant reminder of why we were making sacrifices at home and abroad.
Not all propaganda is negative, at least at that time it wasn’t. Today is another story, though.

Mal, I TOTALLY agree, but I believe the way in which the host on TCM talks ‘propaganda’ is belittling and cheap. I haven’t quoted all the things I’ve heard there….

Instead of immediately pointing out the PROPAGANDA FILM when the movie finishes and we’re feeling so warm and cozy about the great country we live in, I’d like something said like “Imagine the courage and resolve our great soldiers had after Pearl Harbor…” or “Remember those American army nurses who did so much so far from home to help our soldiers survive.”.

    I’m thinking that’d be WONDERFUL.

Man….let the guy relax! Yes, he did slam Obama BIG TIME, for playing about half the golf he’s played this year, but LET HIM ALONE!

Kid, that’s true…and volunteers, no draft for them.

Okay, Z. I get your point. I guess I hadn’t paid that much attention to the BS between the films
Kid, you’re absolutely right about the actors all enlisting, and many came back with heroic tales and medals. Ah, but that was a different time and a different Hollywood, wasn’t it?

But now we live in the victim society. A doctor for the gymnasts had violated the gymnasts for years but no one said anything. An actor has a better agent and gets more money than the female but it is the males fault. Women are paid less than men. A movie producer prays on women for years and they don’t say anything, remember the casting couch since silent movies.
In the age of enlightenment and equal rights why do all these women embrace being victims. Someone leads and they all follow which is good for the leader but makes the rest just followers. Now Opra reads a speech on women rights and she and Meryl Streep just didn’t know Harvey was a molester. Maybe that just shows how buried in the sand their heads are or could they just be posturing for attention.

She was wrong about “later, he went into politics.” He was always in politics. Ask anyone who sat with him at the canteen. 🙂
